Hi all,
I am soon to be a support partner at a labour and I need to find out what can be safely used, eg essentail oils for aromatherapy or massage, herbal teas, etc - any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! :)

Hi!
I have been given a few recipes for blends that can be used in labour. Some of the oils they say not use during pregancy but are great for labour.

Birthing relief
Jasmine 1 drop
Clary Sage 4 drops
Lavender 5 drops
Chamomile 1 drop
mix it with 20ml massage oil

Labour blend
Jasmine 2 drops
Neroli 2 drops
Rose 2 drops
mix with 50 ml massage oil

Stress relief, relaxation and pain relief in labour
Neroli 2 drops ( or Petitgrain 3 drops)
Frankincense 2 drops
Lavender 3 drops
Bergamot 1 drop
mix with 30ml massage oil

Backache during labour
Lavender 4 drops
Chamomile 2 drops
Fankincense 2 drops
mix with 30ml massage oil

Endurance during labour
Lavender 4 drops
Geranium 3 drops
Perppermint 3 drops
Rosemary 2 drops
Neroli 2 drops
Mix in 50ml massage oil

These are a couple of "mists" that you can make and spray around the room during labour. Don't spray them directly on the mother, just around the room.

Relax and focus
Grapefruit 20 drops
Sweet orange 15 drops
Spearmint 10 drops
Fill a 125ml spray bottle with water, add oils and shake well.

Uplift
Mandarin 15 drops
Bergamot 10 drops
Lavender 10 drops
Clary Sage 10 drops
Fill a 125ml spray bottle with water, add oils and shake well.

Just word of advice though, it might pay to mix up what you would like to use and check with the mother first, the oils are very individual things and some people like the smell of some and some don't, and you dn't want a mix you make to make her feel sick! :) So just check with her first. The other thing you can do is get an electric vaporiser, as if she is in hopsital they do not allow candles, so intead of burning a candle, you can use an electric burner, and with most electric burners you do not need to add water to the dish first like with the candle ones, you can just add the oils to the dish. (Omit the massage oil if you want to put it into the vapouriser, you just put the straight essential oils in them)

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Birthing Tea:
Raspberry Leaf Tea, Lavendar, Basil and grated nutmeg

Labour Aide:
lemon juice, manuka honey, pinch of sea salt, pinch of sodium bicarb, 1-2 calcium tablets, potassium & magnesium salts if you have them. Water to taste. Beaut to sip on icy cold from the freezer.

Herbal post-natal bath:
Lavendar, Uva Ursi, Rosemary, Calendula, Sage, Comfrey, Sea Salt, Chamomile, a drop of tea tree oil. I put the herbs in a little muslin baggie and pour hot water over them before adding the herbal liquid to the bath.
