We had our 19 week scan today. Just before the Dr had finished he said that he could see a small amount of choroid plexus cysts. He said that there should not be a problem and they should just go away on there own. He tried to get a better look at the heart to rule out any major problems, but could not get a good look because of the way the baby was lying. He has suggested another scan at 24 weeks to check things again. I walk out of his office not being to stressed about it, but now I am home and on the internet I have made myself a little bit worried. I have not told my DH as he is such a stress head and is away in Cairns at the moment. Everything else looks ok the Femur length is in the 95th centile and everything else is about average.

Has anyone else had a scan picking up this? I have an appointment with my ob on Friday, maybe he will settle my nerves a bit.

Thanks for your reply Sarah. I am trying just to put it to the back of my mind as I am sure it is just a precaution thing that the Dr has told me and said to come in for another scan. I have a feeling that I have nothing to worry about and by my next scan it will be clear.

My baby is going to born healthy with no problems.

Gosh that is 3 of us in the July thread that our babies have this cyst on the brain.

I have done so much research on this and they normally dissapear by the end of the pregnancy.

I am at the stage of asking for another scan to ensure the cyst has disappeared.

I am sure our bubs will be fine, but it would be better for them not to have this in the first place too!

Thinking of you at your next scan and let us know how you go.

i have never heard of them either, until hearing from them in the july thread.

Yes well there is literature that suggests it only happens in 2% of pregnancies, but after all the research I have done there are so many out there that their bubs have had these cysts and they have been born perfectly healthy. There is a website forum on them and everything!!!!

hi there,

my bub was also shown to have one cyst on the brain. I freaked out at first too, but have since relaxed as everything else is perfect, so not much risk of trisomy 18. The thing is though, that even if you do go for another scan, they are always gone after 24 weeks, so it may not be even worth it. They actually aren't even anything that is phsically "there", it just shows on a ultrasound between 16-24 weeks.

If you are of the very few who do have trisomy 18, The cysts will have disappeared after 24 weeks as well, like I said before. The only way to 100% find out, is to have an amnio, and with that, you're chances of miscarrying from the amnio are far greater than having a bub with trisomy 18.

My midwife first mentioned to me that it was 1% of pregnancies diagnosed with this, at first thought I assumed that is rare, but when you think of it, that is one out of 100 pregnancies, and think of how many pregnant women there are all the time! Try to relax about it, hard at times I know :hugs:

We had a scan last week and the cysts are gone. The Dr explained it a bit better to DH and I and it put our minds at ease. Apperently 50% of adults have them and it causes no problems, it's just something that happends over the years. I had not told DH about them as he is such a stress head. We did use the second scan to find out what we are having - It's a GIRL. We are keeping it suprise from all of our family though.

The Dr said that we have a very healthy baby growing in my tummy. It's such a relief to those words. She was hiding her face the whold scan though. Maybe she is going to be a little shy.

I hope you have all stopped thinking about the cysts that were seen on your babies. ou have nothing to worry about and they would be gone by now. We are all going to have lovely healthy babies.

I had the same thing at my 19weeks scan and they had disappeared but the next one at 27 weeks, they say they generally disappear between 26 - 28 weeks. I was never worried as they said they generally do go away....and they did!!!! Try not to let it worry you...

Well the scan went well and his cyst on his brain has disappeared. Whahooooo......

Apparently his head is measuring ahead of his gestation though. Appears I have a boof head. I know at the 18 week scan he was 2 cm bigger in head size then my first son.

:smiliedance: Riley!!!! No more cysts. Sheree i am so happy for you. Also with the big head, dont worry too much, DS's head was 38.5cm when he was born, they say that its helps stretch the cervix and are less likely to tear to badly.

Was he born big too Libby?

I am not worried as I am having a ceasar anyways, but secretly hoping he comes early so that I get my chance of a natural delivery too!

Thats what I got told to. My Ob wanted me to have a amnio. But we think the risk is too high.
Most babys come out fine. The cysts showed up on my 20 week U/S. Were gone at my 28 week U/S. My Ob sound wait and see

Hi everyone...I was also advised that my baby had cysts on the brain at the 18-20wk scan. On top of this we were informed that he also had fluid around his heart. These all were apparently within normal limits but there was cause for concern because they'd picked up 2 things together at the scan. I had the scan looked over by a specialist & he assured us we had nothing to worry about. Since having that scan, I've changed docs & she has an ultrasound machine in the surgery. I had another scan today at 30wks & she confirms that the cysts on the brain have disappeared & the fluid around the heart is gone...thank god. She's very pleased with the baby's developement & we got a good look at it's face today which was nice :) She was more worried about the fluid around the heart than the cysts on the brain. I will be having a follow up scan at the diagnostics centre in a couple of weeks to make sure all the valves & chambers to the heart are functioning properly & the blood is pumping the way it should be. She is not overly concerned but just wants to make sure the baby is ok. If something is picked up I have to have the baby at a different hospital to the one I'm booked in to. Will let you know how it all goes in a couple of weeks. We also tried to confirm the sex today (we were told it's a boy) but she couldn't get a good look so we'll have to confirm in a couple of weeks. I'm pretty sure it definately is a boy...it looks like a little boy :)

Ok...so I had my 32+5 week ultrasound today to see how things are going with the baby's heart. The cysts on the brain are definately gone but there is still a small amount of fluid around the baby's heart but they say it is of doubtful significance. The heart is functioning as it should be but they just want the baby to be assessed when it's born to make sure it's ok. She really didn't seem concerned about it & made the comment that all hearts have fluid around them to some degree & the fluid is very minimal, but has to be noted.

Today they picked up that both kidneys were moderately larger than normal (moderate pelvialyceal dilation). They say the kidneys are functioning properly & it could have been something as simple as the baby not having emptied it's bladder but they have to note it down anyway. Again, they want the baby assessed when it's born to make sure it's ok. She said I could go back tomorrow & have the scan & the kidneys could appear completely normal...they just have to check to make sure & cover their butts i guess.

The baby seems to be measuring at least 2wks ahead & is in the 85th percentile...is this huge? God I hope not. I just hope it means it'll come early like DS1 did rather than a huge baby. It weighs approx 2397gms give/take 350gms. DS1 was born 2.5wks early & weighed 3.333kg. She said he was a chubby bubba but I think he looks perfectly normal & just like his brother. DS1 had very cute chubby cheeks when he was born :)

Here is some photos they took of bub - I have put them all together as one http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/lehma06/babybulk.jpg

In a way I wish i never had the scan today & i wouldn't have been told about the kidney thing...just another thing to add to the stress I've already been worrying about with the other things that were picked up.

I am just trying to keep a really positive mind that he will be ok & that these are just minor things that they have to mention. If anyone else has had anything like this mentioned to them about their babies, I'd love to know please.

Hi Darl,

gr8 news on all regards except the kidneys, but I am sure it is def just a precaution, better to be safe then sorry. Sorry you have to go through all this worry.

Your bub appears big like my boy. They are watching me for the development of GD, but again only as a precaution really. At 28 weeks he was in the 96th percentile and I really do think he had a growth spurt as my belly stayed stable for a while. Then when I just had a scan at 31 weeks 5 days he was weighing in at 2kgs on the 64th percentile. These were 2 completly different machines/centres, so my gyno is only going to compare to the 64th percentile at next appt. So my boy is on the bigger side but maybe not quite as big as they originally thought! I hope that eases your mind and gives you a little information compared to the info I have been recently given.

Take care.

Hi Jasserben, I just wanted to let you know that we were advised both at our 19 week scan and again at 31 weeks, that our little man has renal pelvics dilation which is very similar to what they have picked up with your bub.

We have been told that there is nothing that can be done for now until he is born and even then, it shouldn't affect him too much.

A lady I work with, her husband has it and passed it onto 2 of their children. Both kids were put on antibotics just to prevent infection and by 6 weeks of age, the size of the kidney's had almost gone bak to normal and they are both going great now.

We are just staying positive and keeping our :fingerscrossed: that his kidney's settle by 6 weeks of age. :hugs: and try not to worry too much.

Thanks for ur replies girls :)

I spoke to the doc today & she isn't too concerned about the kidneys. She says she sees it quite often & if something is there when bub is born, it'll more than likely be treated with antibiotics.

The fluid around the heart is the same amount as last time so there is technically less there because the heart has grown in size IYKWIM. Because everything else is pretty much ruled out, she thinks that I may have had an infection early in the pregnancy which could have caused the fluid around the heart...I did read about this. She says that this should drain itself away but if it doesn't we'll deal with it at the time. Not a lot we can do until it's born & I've known that the whole way through.

She reckons we're gonna have a big baby being in the 85th percentile. I just hope that if that's the case, that it comes early like DS1 did.

Other than everything...she believes we have a very healthy looking & active baby :)
