My son is 2 and 1/4 and he is only saying a few words. He says mummy and daddy and baby. He is starting to say a bit more like if its raining he will say wet, and he has maybe 10 other words he says a lot. But he never strings words together at all, he doesn't say things like more mummy.

Is this within the normal band of things or should I start doing something about it.

Oh yes he says lots of things really dramatically like oh- no and uh oh and he can do all the amimal noises you can think of!

While there are many books out there on what "should" happen and at what age, none of them are based on individual children, just groups of children. I don't know about other people, but my child never read those books, she had her own agenda. By his age she was talking in full sentences non-stop and I think in some ways that's a good thing, but it can also do your head in when they just talk non-stop too. If he's making the sounds then I doubt there would be a hearing problem or speech problem present, but if you're worried you check that out. It sounds to me that he just doesn't have anything to say rather than he's incapable of talking. You might have one that only talks when things need to be said.

Do not worry. My DD will be 3 next month & her language skills are poor. I am not worried b/c deveopmentally she has been slow at other things.
She took ages to walk for eg. (20 months)
Try not to read stuff b/c it does your head in.
Your son will get there when he is ready.
My DD is trying & that is all I can ask of her.

As long as he can communicate I wouldn't worry so much. My son is about the same age (turned 2 in November) and he says a few words but no sentences. But he is very independant, can communicate his needs such as going to the toilet, hunger, thirst, sleep etc.
My Mum said that one day he will probably just come out and say something profound! He is just working it all out in his head!
Either that he will just sing instead of talk.

I wouldn't worry - my son's talking really took off from about 2.5 - 3.....I can't shut the little bugger up now!!!! He talks from the second he wakes up till his eyes close at night. Enjoy a little peace and quiet while you can!!!!

Same here:yes: My DS language skills developed dramatically after he turned 2. I wass starting to worry when at 2 he could only say single words. Between then and now ( he is 3 in April) he can now speak in full sentences and I cant shut him up lol.
You might find he will start all of a sudden and learn REALLY fast, they can change soo much in a short few months.
