Hi

My 21 month old son somehow got his way out of his cot today and it has really upset me:(. He is generally a poor day sleeper and often cries in his cot especially if we put him down for an afternoon sleep.

This afternoon I heard him crying and didn't go in straight away because I was hoping he would just give in and go to sleep, plus I was in the middle of feeding DD. Anyways, I opened the door and felt a weight on the door. I thought DH must be in there so I pushed on it and to my utter shock, there was DS sobbing and distressed. Luckily he isn't showing ANY signs of being hurt however I am a little frightened...

SO... my request is this...

What bed rails would you recommend. We have a single bed here that he can go into, we just need to put rails on. He moves around so much in the night so I need something sturdy. I don't know anything about bed rails. Can anyone help???

To be honest, I am not really ready to put him into a big bed but I it comes down to his safety. Anyone got any tips for getting him to sleep in a big bed?

Thanks in advance,
Naomi

Hi Naomi!

They're sneeky little buggas....My 1st ds was terrible to put to bed. We used to put him in his cot and let him cry himself to sleep. One night just before his first b'day we put him to bed and he was crying. Then all of a sudden we heard a thud...sure enough it was ds. He had climbed out of his cot and hit the floor.

Luckily he was unhurt, but it scared the life out of me.

We put him straight into a big bed after that and he was fine with the transition. We got a safety rail that had the bars that go right under the mattress (the whole width, not just a little way under) as it was sturdy and there was no way of ds pushing it off.
I saw some the other day at toys'r'us that looked quite good. I think you can get them in elmo and pooh designs. Maybe go and have a look at your local baby store, they'll be able to help you.

We also put a safety gate on his door so that he could'nt get up and go roaming at all hours of the night.

Hope this helps and good luck:thumbsup:

Thanks for replying MumOf4Monsters... I never thought of DS roaming the house while we sleep:(. DS is so tall he can open all the doors. He sleeps with his door shut now but I think we will be in for a rough ride!!!

Isn't it funny that these bubbas do these things and walk away completely unharmed while their mums are left worrying about what could have been! Isn't motherhood great!!

Thanks again

I'm a bit unconventional I guess, but I never put a safety rail on my boy's bed (he's been in it since 15 months) and he's never ever fallen out - and he used to be SHOCKING when sleeping in his cot/co-sleeping with moving about. I just figure the body needs to learn that it can't just roll about all night... but as I said, he's never fallen out. I have his cot mattress on the floor beside his bed - just in case.

He can climb out of cots as well.. maybe try to put your boy in a portacot if you're unsure of a bed - it's closer to the ground

My DS1 climbed out of his cot at 10mnths (no kidding, he's a monkey) and was in a single bed by his first birthday. I can't remember the brand of rail I had but it was great (I'm so helpful aren't I :p) I think it might've been mothers choice. It was navy blue and you had to lift two little latch things to be bale to fold it down unlike some that you just pull up and away. It was metal not plastic like the saftey first one SIL just gave me for ds2. I'll see if I can find it and come back lol.

As for him roaming during the night you can just put a baby gate in his doorway
