View Full Version : which do you think would be easiest?
I've decided to have a crack at making a cake for the kids birthdays this year, it's a spongebob theme. Problem is that it's a surprise and I'll have 2 hours at the most to decorate the house and make the cake, so I want to make the best cake in the quickest time. I can either do:
a) buy a square cake and make spongebob
b) buy a few round cakes, stack them up and make a pineapple (which is his home) and stick a spongbob candle (which I already have) next to it.
I'm thinking (b) would be quicker and easier, but I'm open to suggestions and any helpful tips.
Or (just thought of this ) I could make it the day before but how would I have to store it?

I'd buy one of those edible picture discs from the cake shop, and plonk it on top of a round cake :D But then I don't see the point of the huge shaped cakes, IME the kid doesn't remember it anyway, they're only interested in hacking it into pieces and eating so much of it they get a stomach-ache
But from your options, I would think actually A) would be easier, because he's square, and using icing and lollies you could get it pretty accurate.
And you'd store it just like any cake, in a big cake container in the fridge.
I don't usually worry about cakes either - usually focus more on making sure it's a really a yummy one than how it looks. But as it's just a small family gathering I wanted to do something a bit special ... mostly for DD who will be 10 and I know she would absolutely love.
Thanks, I think you're right about the spongebob cake being easier so I'll give that a go.
Easiest way I have found:
Buy or make square or rectangle cake the day before - it needs to be cold when you do the icing.
Download and blow up a picture from the internet to fit the top of the cake.
Cut out around the outside edge of the picture and put this cut out picture on top of the cake.
Put the background icing on around the picture, so you use the picture like a stencil IYKWIM. A bit of icing will get onto the picture but this is OK.
Then take the picture off the cake and you are left with the shape outline of the picture on the cake.
Fill this hole in with yellow and white icing as appropriate and then decorate with lollies.
You can get these little tubes of glossy black gel icing from many supermarkets and use this for outlines / details.
