View Full Version : Jacob Duke a.k.a 'Elvis' is in the building

Yep that's right, Jacob's new nickname is Elvis...
sleeps all day, parties all night and loves his food, he's also quite partial to a lip curl every now and then!
Doesn't matter what we've tried he will undoubtedly sleep for most the of the day without any fuss but after midnight he decides that he'll feed, nap for 15 minutes, feed, nap for 15 minutes, feed, nap for 15 minutes...I'm too old for this type of partying!
I've tried to keep him up and awake for longer during the day but it's near impossible to keep a baby awake when they don't want to...unless someone has a wonderful new idea they can let me in on!?
Had one night there where he slept from 1.30am to 8am (sheer panic took over when I woke and realised he'd slept through!) so I did EVERYTHING exactly the same the following night but no luck.
Both J and L were sleeping through by 5 weeks so I'm a bit new to this 'no sleeping at night' scenario, and it's definitely taking it's toll, the boys keep asking me, "Mummy why are you eyes cracked?"
Good side of it is that he's put on 1.1kgs and grown 6cm in 2 weeks...and he's getting rolls!

See that was my positive for having another boy...I'd been told soooo many times that girls are terrible sleepers.
Someone needs to tell Jacob he's a boy and a 3rd boy at that...his job is to eat, sleep and slot into our family with a minimum amount of fuss!

Last night's 'show' began at 1.30am and didn't finish until 6.45am...I gave up at 4.50am and DH took over.

Ok so what we are about a month old ..... Guess putting him on caffeine is a no go then :p

Mmmm how are you trying to keep him awake ? Also what is your routine of a nite ?

Have you tried cluster feeding him continuously in the afternoon then say around 9pm dreamfeeding him & popping him into bed ? How often are you feeding him through the day ?

Cause it sounds like he is sleeping too well through the day so isnt feeding 'enough' so then makes up for it through the nite ... But then he is obviously a smart cookie cause your supply is at its best around 2am !

We stopped b'feeding last week, it was taking 1.5hrs and then he was awake and drinking 180ml from a bottle within 15-20mins of putting him down. I'm proud of us for lasting that long actually!

Isn't it too soon to throw in the towel and get professional help though? Both J and L were such good sleepers, too good in fact...I don't know if this is normal for 5 weeks old.

They take them that early. Just an option there and the bonus is you get to stay in a lovely hospital apparently it is very nice with yummy food:D.

8 weeks is when they start getting a routine happening so hopefully he will start getting the right sleeping pattern by then.

OMG does he drink that much??

Alexander sometimes will finish 140 mls but mostly 100 - 120 mls!!

You got one hungry Duke there!

Aaaaah ok .... Personally i do think its way too early for sleep school but thats me.

He is still really young & unfortunately many babes dont sleep through until 3mths or older in other cases ( like Boof  ). Waking through the nite is common so really at this age its to be expected really because of how little their tummy's are. Its just the fact he is partying afterwards thats the real issue.

It really does seem like he has nite & day confused still but how to change it without going hardcore is difficult because it seems you really are trying everything you can.

I know we had fun & games with Squeak when trying to get him back into a routine with all his reflux issues. I just had to slowly change feeding times & sleeping times by 10min incriments & build it up so things changed over. Then luckily for me he realised what was going on & did it all himself.

When he is waking is it definately for a feed ? Cause sometimes its confusing ( i know you have had 2 others slap me if necessary lol ) to work out what they want at times etc.

Im trying to work out what to try next but my brain isnt working atm ... Had a full on day ummm will be back later with more ideas hopefully !

I have tried to just let Jacob go a little when he first wakes during the night. I turn the monitor off so I'm not reacting to his mutterings and seeing if he'll settle himself - he's in the room right next to us so I can still hear him if he cries which he does if left for too long.
When I pick him up I first just pat him on the back to see if it's wind waking him but as soon as he smells me he starts that 'clown face' - you know, mouth wide open, going from side to side looking for a feed. I've tried a dummy but after a couple of good sucks he realises there's nothing coming out so he spits it, literally!
During the day I can take him out of the cot, put him into the pram, walk along gravel footpaths, into a school full of screaming and yelling children and then bring him home to the madhouse without him even opening his eyes!
The mums at school are starting to wonder if I drug him because they've never seen him awake!

Hope you got a better nights sleep!

it looks like he settles with noise around him have you tried having a radio or maybe a fan in his room anything that makes a slight noise, believe it or not they have proven that noises such as vacuum cleaners (ofcourse which you cannot use at night) fans, etc lullabys the baby cause it reminds them of the noise in the womb.

Maybe he feels more secure with noise.

Could it be colic? is he stretching out his legs like a stiff board? Have you tried lying on his tummy and letting him sleep on top of you till he settles.
Sometimes i do a excersise with Alex and it brings up whatever wind is trapped out, just lie him on his back and excersise his legs in a bicycle motion then after a while lift and burp.

Also a nice warm bath before bed to relax him? Alexander is like a floppy doll after a bath.

Sorry but am starting to run out of suggestion hope he gets it real soon for your sanity :hugs:

Yeah like Candyn suggested have you tried noise to help him sleep ?

Master G loves having his fan on if its a bad day the noise really helps him & funnily enough Boof running around screaming downstairs helps some days too ... Yep strange kid !

There is a CD you can get to play on continous loop that has white noise etc babies love it.

Has Mr Duke tried settling him for you through the nite cause he has associated you with milk so sometimes its best for daddy to try.

Are you wrapping him ?

I really feel for you it sucks ! Boof hardly slept at all even through the day & it sent me off the deep end. Hopefully as he gets that little bit older it will change.

My Mum stayed last night and did the night feeds for me!! Jacob, unfortunately didn't change his wild ways because Nanny was here either.
Have tried the baths before bed...nope.
Don't think it's colic because as soon as he's picked up he settles.
He just loves us is all.

Might see if I can find that CD...couldn't hurt.
Papaduke works until 4/5am so I'm the sole care taker for the nightshift, although my Mum is a huge help.
The other night I went to bed at 4.50am and Papaduke took over until he finally went to sleep at 6.50am! Then poor Papa had to be up at 11am to get ready for work.
I don't wrap him because he hates it.

On the bright side, his photo is up on that photographer's website...

enter the site, click on 'galleries', then 'babies' and the little man is the first in the series!!!

Carly - I'd book into a sleep school. It could take a while to get in so book in asap. I did it with Tyler and it really helped.

Aubs is sleeping 5ish hrs at a time now and the amount of milk she has doesn't make a difference. Could little J have a belly ache from eating so much/often?

How old was Tyler? I'm just still on the fence and not ready to admit defeat...he's a boy, I should be able to 'break his spirit'!
I'll give him another couple of weeks...part of me still thinks he's just finding his groove.
The thing is he's such a great sleeper during the day so he can do it. He just has things the wrong way around...he was just the same in my tummy!

I traveled a bit over 40mins but you're a little further than that...pity, she's very good.

I know i'm a year behind here and i promise i'm not stalking you Carly but i had my DD2 (fourth child) who did this! Very frustrating!

The thing that worked for us was after her late afternoon bottle (4pmish) i would put her in her rocker in the loungeroom so she didn't sleep too deeply (because of the noise of all the other's).
She would feed about 4pm sleep, wake her for a bath at 6pm, feed again around 7pm and after that she would go to bed for the night. Does that make sense?

Good Luck! It's not easy is it when your eyes are on stalks and the older kids are demanding your attention when all your eye's want to do is close.

I'm going to try your routine...sounds good.
Tonight might be a good night :fingerscrossed: usually a pretty good sign that he's going to be awake at night is that he's so alert and looking around at that last feed...tonight he was completely zonked and fell asleep while I was burping him.
Pray for me!

Gee, I've never heard that and both my girls are good sleepers...

Have you tried a sleep school?? I didn't read through responses so, just chucking it in there in case it hasn't been mentioned before... Not sure what they're called in VIC but they should be listed in Jacob's health record book...

Going by Annabelle's book, VIC has:
Parentline :13 22 89

Becca's book only has our local ones...

I hope he settles into a daytime wake routine for you really soon C!!!

Don't they start control crying in the sleep schools from 2 months? or is that 3 months??

C don't feel as though you've failed or given up 5 weeks with no sleep is a mighty fine feat!!

How old was Tyler?
By the time I got in he was 12wks and his problem was that during the day he only slept for 30-60mins over the whole day.

Waiting times will vary and there's probably more of them now than 5yrs ago. It's well worth it.

Mamaduke
15-02-2008, 08:03
Thanks for all of your advice...
last night he went from 10pm to 2am, then after I'd put him down (he was very sleepy) he started to grunt and groan and then do a poo (see, even his bowels think it's daytime!)...so I changed him and by the time I finished that he was wide awake!
Put him down and he started to whinge so I gave him a dummy...from then on I was up and down putting the dummy back into his mouth when it had fallen out.
DH got home at around 4.45am and Jacob was still going...crying by this stage so DH took over and gave him a bottle.
I don't know how long he was up with him - letting poor Papaduke sleep.

Have you tried in a swing or bouncer?? I know it's not recommended but when I was having issues with Annabelle when she refused to sleep and refused the dummy, it was the only way I could get her to sleep... It was a sanity saver, but being my first I was bound to have sanity issues...

Okay, so last night I decided to bring back the muslin wrap. He decided a while ago with all of his fussing and fidgeting that being wrapped wasn't the go so I stopped doing it but last night I wrapped him but left his arms out (he liked to sleep with his arms up on each side of his head) and he went 4 hourly. Usually the middle of the night feed results in him being awake for a good 3/4 hours but that didn't happen last night! At the 2.30am feed he likes to drink a bit more than usual and refuses to settle until he gets his 240ml as opposed to 180ml so he had that last night and I put him back in his cot awake and he went to sleep by himself.
Last feed was at 6am (I think...brain fuzzy!:dizzy:) and he's still asleep...this is the time he thinks it's night and sleeps longer!

I'm feeling your pain...and I don't even have a meeting to go to!

Last night I took the snuggle bed and lambskin out of the cot and replaced it with the change table mat - it's one of those really thick ones where the sides are a raised a little. I did this because I noticed that when I put him on the change table he just throws his arms back and settles so I thought it was worth a try.
He went four hourly last night which is great for him!
Today I'm going to wake him every 3 hours for a play, change, feed and burp...see if I can't wear him out that way.
