depends on how much work you want to do in preparing the food, i've got a book here that is full of party food, some take a while to make, some quick and easy

The bread thing your talking about is a cob loaf. Just buy a cob loaf fromt he bakery and cut the top of and pull the centre bits out- they will be the dipping parts.

In the centre you can put just about anything- my fave is a corn relish mix. Just a jar of corn relish and a tub of sour cream mixed together. Or theres one with French onion soup mix but I dont know excat recipe!

Cob Loaf Dip ;) YUMMO! Buy a Cob Loaf, chop the top off, take the insides out in bits big enough to use as dippers, and at the very end, bake those bits in the oven for 5 - 10 minutes on a low heat, to make them crust up a bit.

Some different recipes for Cob Loaf Dip:

#1
1xCob loaf
1xpacket frozen chopped spinach
300ml tub sour cream
1xpacket philly cheese
1xpacket of french onion or spring vegetable soup.

Thaw and drain the spinach and mix with the soup mix and the cream and cheese, put in the cob loaf and put in the oven for 15-20 mins and serve.

OR

#2
1 x Cobb Loaf
250g x Cream Cheese
1 x cup grated Cheese
1 x cup mozarella Cheese
1 x cup cream
1 x onion chopped finely
100g x chopped bacon

Cut top off loaf making a lid, then cut a hole in loaf. Remove bread in chunks, keep lid and bread aside.

In a bowl, mix together ingredients.

Place cobb loaf on baking tray, pour in mixture.

Bake at 180 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring occassionally.

Place lid back on cobb loaf and place bread chunks around loaf on tray, bake for another 10 minutes.

#3
1 xCobb loaf
1 x Large Tin of tuna
1 x Small carton Sour Cream
1 x tub Philli Cheese
1/2 packet french onion soup mix.

Mix all ingredients together putting tuna and french onion in last.

Place loaf and bread chunks in oven to crisp before adding mixture.

Heat mixture up in mocrowave for a minute or 2 and pour into cobb.

Another 'adult' dip, which is really yummy is artichoke.

you need to mix together:
1 tin of chopped artichoke hearts
1 cup of whole egg mayonaise (i like the 'best foods' brand myslef)
1 cup of grated cheese
salt and pepper to taste.

mix it all together and then wack it into a moderate/hot oven for about 30 mins, stiring every now and then.

Serve hot or cold.
Its really nice on a antipasto plater with toasted turkish bread, olives, sun dried toms, salami etc.

Oh, and i just remembered a mexican dip:

in a pie dish or similar you layer refried beans, guacamole (sp?), sour cream, salsa, cheese and chives. Then people dip into it with corn chips.

Its like nachoes, but a cold dip version, so the chips dont go soggy.

I make a loaf of focaccia in my bread machine (or you could just buy one or turkish bread)

Then I serve it with hommus or olive oil dip.

Homemade hommus.

1 large tin chickpeas
1 large lemon, zest and juiced
2 cloves garlic
Olive oil
salt, pepper
shake of cumin powder
2 tbsp tahini (optional)

Blitz together with plenty of olive oil until it forms a smooth paste. Pour into a bowl and sprinkle with paprika.

Serve with bite size chunks of warm bread or lebanese/pita bread. Vege sticks are good too.

Cheap, easy and always a hit.

Olive oil dip is as easy as a shallow bowl or plate. Pour extra virgin olive oil over a good balsamic vinegar for dipping bread into.

Beer battered chips.

Buy a bag of beer battered chips. Deep fry and wrap 3 or 4 in newspaper or butchers paper to pass around on a platter

Oyster shots.

Put an oyster (buy the ones in the jar) into a shot glass and top up with guiness, or lemon vodka.

Rice paper rolls.

Rice paper wrappers
snow pea sprouts
crabsticks or prawns or chicken
Mint
coriander
grated carrot

Wrap up and cut in half. Keep moist by covering with a damp tea towel
Serve with sweet chilli sauce

I like Nachos - I just buy a pkt of corn chips, lay them on a nice tray, or in a dish, put heaps of grated cheese on top and pop them in the oven until the cheese melts. Remove from oven and drizzle over a small jar of salsa, and a dollop of sour cream in the middle, and some guacamole if you fancy - you can get packet mixes at the supermarket for guacamole, you just add the mashed avacado, it's really yummy.

What about just some pizza, spring rolls, dim sims. And I find everyone always eats sausage rolls, pies and pasties. Or cocktail frankfurts with a bowl of tomato sauce for dipping.

Another thing you could do is buy those small vol-au-vent cases (usually in the bread section of the supermarket) and make up a tuna or chicken mornay mix and put in the cases with grated cheese on top, and heat in the oven, they're nice too.

Good Luck !!

Mini vola-vants are always easy just make a nice white sauce and throw in some asparagus or mushroom etc you can make it the day before and just fill them on the day and heat through quick and easy :)

a really quick and easy one is to get some pitta bread and cover it in parmisan cheese and cook it in the oven till slightly browned then cut it up in to wedges.. yummy

Chunks of turkish bread (warmed) with really good quality olive oil and dukkah to dip in

Another vol au vent recipe is to get the tiny ones and put a small bit of smoked salmon in, cook, and then top with finely minced white onion, a dollop of sour cream and a small dollop of caviar on top. Or camembert and cranberry jelly and cook until the cheese is all gooey (but don't bite into it right out of the oven! Learn from me  )

Chinese spoons with a mouthful of food - you can get the plastic ones in big bags from big W now, it makes catering really easy. Put a small cos leaf on each one (use the little ones in the centre) and top with either one medium king prawn or a couple of small ones, and a swirl of seafood sauce for a mini prawn cocktail; or shaved beef cooked in oyster sauce; or a twist of smoked salmon with creme fresh, lemon zest and dill

Fresh shucked oysters with a variety of dressings

you can get mini pastry cases in the deli section of most supermarkets, and fill them with little mouthfuls of food - whizz up a jar of marinated artichokes with a little olive oil and a whole roasted head of garlic (when it cools down, squeeze the pulp out). Spoon into a case and top with a shard of parmesan; or mix goats cheese and cream to your taste and top with olive tapenade (you can do this like an egg yolk custard in a double boiler for a thicker mix)

mini falafel with a yoghut dipping sauce
