No unfortunately you are not the only one. We don't have to now as we have paid our outstandings back and then some. But there were times a few years ago when I was too scared to answer the phone just in case. :o

Hoping everything gets better for you. :hugs:

I think more people struggle with the costs of everyday living, but it isn't something they want to admit in public.

When I first moved to Melbourne 4 years ago, I didn't have a job, I got $200 a week from Centrelink adn my rent was $170 a week. Yes do the math and discover that I had $30 left to eat and pay bills. It was actually a relief when the phone got cut off, no more debt collectors ringing night and day!!

oooh yeah!
haha its a horrible feeling, however we finally just got a re-finace for our house in which we WERE going to sell. but it worked out better for us to just roll all our debts into our new home loan.

we now debt free *yay* although we have bigger home loan now, but its worth it. i hate owing money, especially when u dont have the money to pay it back!!

my new loan just saved us OVER $400 a week!!!

have u considered doing something like that? as it can be a huge weight lifted, we didnt think anyone would help us out of the mess we were in (and it really was beyond a joke!) and the NAB saved the day, i couldnt thank them more!
now i dont have to worry about them phonecalls that i used to try and avoid.

Hi Jem
I hope things improve for you guys soon, sorry I can't be more helpful I just wanted to say it is really hard when you are struggling & because you are it always seems like more bills just keep coming in. When DH & I were first together some 11years ago now we struggled thank goodness he has had a good job for the last 9.5yrs that has taken care of our money worries & allowed me to be at home.
Try & stay positive - they say where there is a will there is a way! I believe this.

Take care
Tara

The likes of bluestone, kensington & liberty finance lend to people with bad/no credit rating. Suffer their high rates for 1 year and refinance to a conforming lender.

Call them and arrange a payment plan.

If you owe $2k offer $100/week or something like that.

The best thing for a credit collector next to a full settlement is incoming money right now and promised incoming money in the future.

What about interest.. even if im paying a certain amount each week.. the interest would never stop

As opposed to paying nothing at all? And perhaps ending up in court or losing your belongings which you own?

Interest on principal + risk vs Interest on principal - payment + peace of mind.

and also unpaid debts remain on your record for a long long time! All our debts are completely paid off and have been for two years but there is still a note of our credit rating from Baycorp which is still in the 5 or 7 (can't remember which) cycle. It does state that it has been paid but we have been refused loans and the like because of it. When we questioned it, they said that yes they were notified that it was paid but their policy was that if anything comes up on the credit check it is automatic refusal.

Very recently I've learnt the art of saying "I can afford to pay $X per week." and stick to it.
The banks, telcos, energex companies and the rest are normally pretty forgiving and eager to make an arrangement like such rather than not getting anywhere at all.
Also makes me feel so SO good when I get to the bottom of the bill!! :D

I think the only thing I'm in the red with at the moment is my creditcard .... I'm getting there tho'.. so will you :) :hugs:

I've gone through the same thing. Like Barry said - the best thing is to say to them "I can pay $100 a fortnight" or whatever it is that you can do. If they ask for $120 or $130, dont budge. Be firm!

You can do it!!! Debt is horrible! DH is away ATM and I am in charge of all finance... I have never been very good at it, so am learning very slowly!!!

Never ever dont pay anything or avoid them. If you avoid them they will mark your credit and it could affect you up to 7 years later (which if you 19 doesnt sound like long but its a long way to 26 and life is different) There are agencies that can be the middle man for you with all the debt collectors or just write to them but try and realistic. Ive worked in banks were people offer to pay $5 a week and think thats acceptable- $5 a week will not get you out of trouble especially if you havent paid a single cent or regular payments. If you do get a arrangement stick to it dont miss a payment- if you cant budget well some charities offer budgeting assistance which is well looking into but the hardest thing is to learn to live within your means and being tough on yourself. If you really cant afford it go without or look for other alternatives.

PS Also avoid getting credit from the agencies who deal with those with bad credit they factor in that you are likely to default in the interest rate and usually only lend to you hoping that you will so that they can charge late fees etc!!

Do I know how you feel!!
It seems like you're going in circles, you manage to pay one bill off somehow and there comes another wammer of a bill.

I can't tell you how many times I set up a budget plan and organized automatic payments from my account, and this might go well for a month or so and then it all falls to pieces again....anyone else in this situation?

I seem to have it worked out ok at the moment, after reading this thread before I started to set up -yet another-budget plan and also a automatic payment from my account and believe me, I have the best intentions........

I hope this works out!!
