Hi

My 4 month old DS is breast fed except for about a month ago I tried to wean him so he was having about 50-100mls of NAN HA Gold every couple of days. He hasnt had any formula now for 3 weeks and it has been 10 days since his last poo. I know breastfed babies can go 10 days without pooing, but now what? Do I take him to the doctor? Could he be constipated? He is farting alot but he is not unsettled.

Thanks
Natalie

I had this problem with DD when she was about 3 months old. I know this may sound a little...well...gross, but she hadn't been for a poo for about a week so I massaged her bum hole with my finger whilst gently squeezing her belly a little. Don't ask me why, I just though it might help! AND IT DID!!! All over my hand!!!!!!!!:barf:

I have told other mums this and it has worked for them aswell!!!!

If you try it and it still doesn't work, I'd pop him along to the docs just to make sure everythings ok.

Anyone else got any ideas????

water if he takes it. Formula apparently isn't as easy to digest and they need the extra fluid to conpensate. Good luck!!:fingerscrossed:

I know what it's like when I haven't pooed for that long - yuk! I'd take him to the doc, just in case...

...the other idea (we've done it when our bub was constipated) used by nurses at hospital is with a clean cotton bud and heaps of vaseline, gently massage the anus (as first mum suggested), you can gently insert the cotton bud, if you feel ok doing it, and it gently prompts the bowel to push the movement through.

Also natural glycerine gel tablets (cut in half and inserted in the anus) expel poo IMMEDIATELY as it loosens it all up. Seek medical or pharmacist recommendation on this.

I would agree with your initial gut feeling though, and take bub to doctor. The doctor will probably give you a script or name of over the counter laxative.
