When you're breastfeeding you can, I know that, but I'm not sure about otherwise.

Yes you can. Its not overly common, but its possible to bleed but not ovulate.

Yes especially with pre menopausal women (but not exclusively)

That's interesting!

So Can I assume that if I get my period (*not pre menopausal or bf'ing) that I have ovulated?

Ovulation and your af are controlled by different hormones, so it is perfectly possible to just not have an LH surge (which controls ovulation) but to have an af .......

And lots of women actually can ovulate ..... but the egg is very immature or they ovulate from a lesser LH surge so it doesnt show up on some tests etc.......still get period as normal.

yes it is, i have this problem.

what happens(this is what my FS said) is that even though you havent ovualted the lining of the uterus gets so think that it will eventually start to sheed its self, chances are that it wont be a monthly thing , eg i only bleed once every 5-6 months

No, you can't :) Like Katie'sMum said - you can ovulate but not bleed or vice versa.

hey I Actually Thot Aswell That Once U Get Ur Af Back U R Ovulating But Im Getn My Af Every Month But The Opk's Say I Still Not Ovulating And Im On Cd19 So I Think Im Getn My Af Evry Month But Not Ovulating????? Im Goin To Keep Taking The Tests The Whole Month C If A Maybe O Late???

katiesmum... Did U Say Sum Opk's Dont Pick Up On Ovulation??? X

yes - but just because you dont get a +ve OPK doesnt mean you havent ovulated.

OPK's do not work for everybody. OPK's (urine tests) measure the LH in your urine (your LH surges during a normal cycle which causes you to ovulate). the OPK's pick up when your LH is high ....

Problem is - some women have very high LH anyway ...so OPK's show o'ing all the time, and other people's LH surge is quite low, so the OPK's dont pick it up.....

Saliva testers like Maybe Baby test salts / electrolytes in your saliva, which also increase when o'ing - but has the same problems.

OPK's are usually a little more reliable and work for more women than saliva tests.

So - just because you arent getting a posative test - doesnt mean you arent o'ing.

What I would suggest is chart your temp, observe your cm and try opk's for about 3 months. If you cant see a definate pattern of ovulation from all or any of these indicators, see your doctor and perhaps ask to do blood tests to track your ovulation. The blood tests also measure LH, but will give you a definate answer as to whether or not you are ovulating......

Good luck :hugs:

Yes it is definately possible to have a bleed but not ovulate- these cycles are called annovulatory (or something like that!).

Like Katiesmum said, the first at-home step you can take to determine if you are ovulating is to chart your BBT, observe CM & use OPK's.

OPK's don't always work though, some months I see the surge and some I don't but I know I ovulate each month as it's confirmed by blood tests. I have also read that it's possible (rare but possible) to get a positive OPK but then not actually ovulate. Temping is far more acurate and of course the most definate way of determining ovulation is by blood tests & scans.

Good luck!

Lifesgood- do you think you have ovulated already? If you have, there's probably not much point starting charting now since your AF will be just around the corner (or hopefully not and you will get a BFP instead!). But if you have long cycles and probably haven't ovulated yet, there's no harm starting now.

As for the time to take your temp- it doesn't matter really, whatever suits you but it has to be the same time each day and after at least 3 hours consecutive sleep. You do it before you get out of bed or move much (sometimes hard if you are being woken by a toddler!) I do mine about 6am which is a good time. There is no 'normal' temp, and it's not the actual individual temps that you are looking at but more the overall pattern. They will be low before O and then higher after O. Some people see a dip on the day of ovulation but some dont so really the temps just confirm you've ovulated and you will have to go by CM as far as timing BD'ing right. I recommend signing up for fertilityfriend.com.

With your CM, you check it throughout the day but record the most fertile that you saw- e.g if all morning you saw just creamy but that night you saw watery, you would record watery on your chart. You are looking for watery & egg white consistency around O time which is what is best for conceiving.

Hope this helps!

Thanks life'sgood, I'm glad I could be of some help.

We have been trying for about 9 months now. Mason happened very easily, about 3 months of TTC with no problems. And it really was only the 2nd cycle of trying because I had such long cycles then too.

Good luck, if you have anymore questions there is always someone on here who can help you out!
