Hi,

Is it common for reflux babies to chuck even 3 to 4 hours after their bottle? DD always throws up hours after her bottle which seems unusual as I would of thought the feed should be digested by then and they are usually pretty big milky spews as well. She loves to play on her activity mat but as soon as I put her on it(even with her head raised) she just keeps spewing even 4 hours after a bottle!!

DD is now 4 months and her reflux is no better. She has been on liquid Losec (4ml/day) for about 5 weeks. It seemed to help for a little while but she is now coughing again and getting the hiccups all the time.

She was on Karicare AR which really reduced the chucking for a few weeks then it was like it just stopped working and the chucking just increased again. And it also caused her to be constipated. The HCN told me just to put her back on Karicare Gold and thickner which has been great for her bowel movements but terrible for her chucking and she seems to fuss alot more with this combination as though she just doesn't like it. I don't want to change her formula again but maybe it is the best thing, any recommendations? I just feel like such a failure because I keep chopping and changing her and nothing seems to work.

I know I have posted alot of threads lately but I have no where left to turn, I am at my wits end and feel like the worst mother because I can't find a way to help my beautiful little girl.:(

Sorry hun.... I'm still recovering after last nights bubhub awards.......
Just re-read your thread....
How's the reflux 'pain' going?
So she back on the gold..... Mmmmm!!!!
Chucking 'without' pain?.....
Thickeners cause slower emptying of the tummy and slower motility.... the added fibre in the gold will combat the bowel issue BUT the thickening agents cause the tummy to have contents in it alot longer hence the up-chuck 2,3,4 hours later.....

It can be common, it can also be something called delayed gastric emptying which is when it takes them longer to digest food, as long as they are gaining weight then they generally let it be.

What I can suggest is a new formula one that is hypoallergenic, like the Nan HA, it does make a difference, it is basically more broken up and easier for them to digest so it doesn't sit as long.

Also when you are seeing a full feed come up, it may look like a lot but when it is mixed with acid etc... it makes it look a lot more than it is another reason why they go on weight.

WIth the medicine, it is also common when you are on a liquid to see a difference and then it go bad. There is one main reason and that is that the compound does not last as long as the pharmacy says it will. In a normal home environment 10-14 days is about when you need to get it changed to a new batch. After this time it starts to become unstable and loose its efficiency.

Also with the med if you are getting it compounded 2mg/ml, you could get an increase in it also. For 4 months minmum would probably be 5ml a day and this could go up a little more. The best way is to split it at least twice a day this keeps it in the system so that it works better also.

AR formulas are not so good because they are full milk formula and again harder to digest. If you do have to thicken, get the hypoallergenic formula and thicken it with a thickener.

Don't feel like a failure, it takes a long time to work out what is best, not all refluxers are the same and you will work it out. :hugs:

Thanks for your advice Scarlet. I was considering putting her on a HA formula but when I asked the HCN she said it would be a bad thing now that she is 4 months old. She said that because the proteins are so broken down in the HA formula it would then make it harder for her body to learn to break down the proteins when she starts on solids. Does that make sense?

Hey there, i had similar issues with my bub she would have large vomits up to 4 hrs after her feed when i would go to feed her again, she was also very unsettled a lot of the time, it was a real pain to go anywhere. We ended up changing her to pepti junior which is a pre digested formula that you need a script fro a doctor and also Losec since then new baby! We still suffer some reflux maybe once a week but nothing like it was. I know the doc told me not to get my hopes up after a good week or to cos a lot of the time that can pass and they go back to the way they where whick is what has obviosly happened to you.
