View Full Version : how to give zoton to 6 month old???
Hi
DD has just been put on Zoton, and was just wondering how you would give it to her??
DS is also on Zoton, and we just spoon it straight out of a medicine cup. I tired this with DD but most of it came straight back out. I know when DS first started on it we tried a sringe but the balls wont go through.
Any suggestion would be great.

DD is 6 mths and has been on Zoton for a couple of months. She is on half a sachet twice a day. I use a teaspoon to measure the sachet into two containers, keep one aside for the next dose and add 15mls water to the other. I shake it up so it is mixed properly and use a syringe to give it to her. I have her lying fairly straight (either in her cot or in DH's arms) and put the syringe into the side of her mouth and as far back as possible.
We had problems getting her to take anything initially as she had a very sensitive gag reflex and we even used to have to hold her chin closed to make her swallow, but now she likes it so much that she gulps it down.
DH cut the end off a 5 ml syringe to make the hole larger, probably about half of the tip. You just need to make sure there aren't any sharp edges. The only time we have trouble with it now is if DD puts her tongue over the end.
I have also tried adding it to pears, but she was too young at the time and just pushed it straight back out of her mouth. If you do add it to anything other than water, then I have read that you should only add it to something slightly acidic, eg: pears, apples or yoghurt. Apparently you shouldn't add it to milk (BF or FF) as it can reduce the effectiveness.

Hi there i have a bub on medication that is in tablet form that when disolves is full of little balls, i find the easiest thing is to disolve in a little watered down juice or sometgin nice tasting, lay bub flat on the back, make them happy by talking or singing and syringe it in with 10ml syringe, the larger the syringe the bigger the hole at the end i aim the syringe it one cheak and let her taste and swallow it.

Not sure what state you're in but a chemist can make it into a liquid form for you. Easier to administer.
Some mums say the liquid is not as affective, but i found it was better if not the same in it's affectivness. However, the liquid form only last for 4 weeks. Anything left over after 4 weeks needs to be thrown out and you need to get some more made up.
I used to gve 1/4 of a sachet until i got the liquid form. I would measure it with measuring spoons and store the left over sachet in an air tight container (still in the packet). I would put the powder into a small container (often the bottle) and add no more than about 10/15mls of water and stir with a teaspoon or use the dropper to make sure it was mixed well. I would then lay DS2 flat and put the dropper in the side of his mouth and squirt it in slowly. Wait for the gulp and then squirt some more. Sometimes having a dummy in helped. Then when all the liquid was gone i would use a teaspoon to scrap all the beads of zoton off the bottom of the bottle and gently put the teaspoon in his mouth and lift it, so the beads were in the roof of his mouth and put the dummy in fo rhim to suck and swollow the beads.
I would give him this about 10/15 mins before a feed. Most effective that way. Would be better to do it 30 mins before but DS2 could never wait that long.

Thanks. I will try cutting the end of the srygine to make the hole bigger and see how we go. I also love the idea of using the dummy to swallow as she loves her dummy.
thanks again
