Well when we took our DS to the paed's 2wks ago for behavioural problems, he discovered that our DS has an undescended testicle. I felt so bad and stupid that i had never noticed, but i dont know much about toddlers gentalia. So now we have to see a surgeon to get it brought down. The dr said that if it stays up there that it could cause infertility and could lead to testicular cancer later in life. I just read on the net that the surgery should be performed before 2yrs old to be fully beneficial. Now im worried that we've left it too late, as he is 3 in a few months. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to his future by us not acting on it quick enough. :crying: Has anyone on here been through this problem with their kids or even heard about it?

Hi Jaydensmum
My DS has an undescended testicle aswell. He is having surgery soonish (probably march but depending on hospital availability). My paed said it only matters that it is done before puberty and I know people who have left the operation till 6,7,8 years old.
Medical websites are notoriously unreliable so please don't consider what they say.
There's no reason for you to feel guilty at all. How were you to know? They check for it so many times, at birth, at ECN check ups, 6 week check up with the GP, etc, so alot of medical professionals have let you down there.
It doesn't matter though, he will be fine :hugs: He is having the operation well before puberty.
PM me if you want to chat. :hugs:

Why should you have noticed?
The CHN & the Doctor should have picked this up. This is one of the routine things they check for. (or at least mine do every checkup)
I'm not in the habit of feeling my boys' testicles & rely completely on the health professionals picking up this sort of problem. I'm not trained to assess whether or not their testes have dropped sufficiently & I'm guessing neither are you.
Does this make us bad mothers?
Definently not.
The important thing is it has been found & can be fixed. Also , without knowing, he has had time to develop normally which of course, could have happened.
Hope his treatment is straight forward & uneventful as it can be.
My DH had his undescended testicle brought down at age 13!
He does have reduced fertility, but I'm more inclined to believe that that is due to him wearing tight jeans every day all day. ( I can't get him into shorts, no how, no way!)
He is at a slightly higher risk of testicular cancer but just needs to be checked out regularly.
I know this is a bit of an old thread now but I was just wondering how everyone's little boys went having their surgery? My son was detected young, but they have still left it until 2 to see if it would come down on its own, and igt hasn't so he has his surgery booked for next tuesday. I am scared and worried for my little man, and hope that he copes ok. For people who' boys had this done, were they wearing nappies still? As my boy is still in nappied and I am worried it will irritate it, and the seat belt on the way home!
He has to be nil by mouth before it and this is going to be one of the hardest parts, as the first things to come out of his mouth in the morning is ," I want weetbix please mummy".
Hope everything went well for you all!
