Hi, I am a very blessed mother of 3: DS1 nearly 6, DS2 21/2 ,DD1 6 months. My first and third pregnancies were fairly normal and both children have gone through the developmental stages at the times they should. However, at 20 weeks into my second pregnancy, I suffered from "slap cheek" or "parvo virus". My obst. monitored me closely and I had extra fluid around the baby, resulting in a 3 week stay in hospital before he was born 2 weeks early by ceasar. My bub was tiny, quiet, wouldn't feed properly and so didn't put on weight until he was around 8 weeks old. He suffered from asthma like symptoms which went on until he was diagnosed as being an asthma sufferer at 2 years of age. He didn't do all the things that my eldest did and child care/family became concerned. We were finally able to have him tested around his 2nd birthday and he was diagnosed with global development delay. He didn't walk unaided and without holding onto walls and furniture until he was 26 months and he has only just started to communicate properly using single words in context. It has been a heartbreaking and frustrating experience as people either say he will get there in his own time or they judge him for what he can't do. We have a wonderful paed. who is very encouraging and we are going through as many channels as we can to help him along.
My question to other mums and carers out there is this - has anyone got a similar story??? I know the risks that parvo can cause in the first trimester of pregnancy but I would like to know if anyone else had the virus whilst pregnant. I guess too that I'd like to know how things turned out for your chld.
Cheers:wave::fingerscrossed::wave::wave:

I had severe gastro when I was about 16 weeks pregnant.. though thats not the same as parvo (I thought parvo was a illness that mostly effects dogs?) I had been measuring further along in my dates throughout my pregnancy, at least 2-3 weeks, they did an ultrasound at 36 weeks because they thought dd was going to be a big bub but she was normal, born 7lb10, so they put it down to excess fluid. She was born normally at 41 1/2 weeks, had meconium in the waters and it was a long labour but she stil got an apgar of 9.9. Shes now 7 months old and so far is doing fine, doesnt seem delayed in anything.. but time will tell. Im not sure of the link of illnesss in pregnancy and development delays, maybe very prem bubs yes, because their bodies arent as developed as they normally would be at a certian age.

Yep, Parvo is something that dogs get but this is a human thing. You get flushed cheeks, as though someone has slapped you, a tingling in the scalp and then a fine lacy rash all over your body. You feel itchy and your joints ache like you have the flu or something worse. It lasts for a few days and affected my liver. They monitored my son's development from then on and I had at least 4 ultrasounds on top of the regular ones to check extra fluid and that blood flow to the brain was normal. They told me that he was going to be a big baby (nearly 10lb like my first boy) but turned out 6lb 5oz and was only 2 weeks early.
I guess we just want answers to why it's happening to my beautiful boy.
