Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me the common u/s that obs usually do?

My understanding is that they usually do a dating scan around 8-10 weeks.

And at some point they test for abnormalities (18 weeks?)

Don't they also do one at 12 weeks? What's that one for?

I'm getting a bit confused.

We have our first ob visit on Feb 18. If my calculations are right we will be 7 weeks, 3 days. I will be asking for an u/s as last time I had a missed miscarriage.

regards
kas

They should notice any abdormalities while doing the ultrasound. The did with me.
I missed out on the 12week ultrasound which is when they test for down syndrome.
because the doctor i saw at the time was completely useless and i wasnt ment to have another one till 18weeks but i have my dates confused and when i went for what i thought was my 18week scan i was only 15 weeks, this is when they noticed something not right with bub and my proper doctor referred me to RSNH to get a better look and a disgonises.

Goodluck and i hope all is well..

Hi there,

My obs recommends the first routine ultrasound at 12 weeks to check for Downe Syndrome risk and to confirm the early viability of the pregnancy.

Second u/s is at around 19 weeks to detect and exclude foetal abnormalities. Further scans are only ordered if there is specific areas of concern.

For one of my pregnancies I had an earlier u/s at around 7 weeks, but this was only to confirm the due date as I had no idea how far along I was!

Im sure it varies from ob to ob but that is how my ob works and from what I understand it is pretty standard.

Hope it helps. Good luck with the pregnancy.

The NT scan is performed around 10-13 weeks but its not something that everyone has done but it is pretty common. If they find a problem with the results they will perform an amnio.
I dont remember from my last pregnancy which ones are common as my OB has ultrasound equipment in his office and did one every time I was there so I could have a look but from memory, I went for the routine utrasounds about three times.
