View Full Version : What do you use, Commercial or Fresh Food?
"Now that your baby is eating some solid foods, fresh is usually best. However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, beets, carrots, collard greens, and turnips contain large amounts of nitrates in some parts of the country. Nitrates can cause a type of anemia in your baby. Even though you can't personally test the vegetables in your area, rest assured that baby-food companies take precautions not to use vegetables high in nitrates. So if you want to feed these vegetables to your baby, it is safest to buy commercially prepared jars".
I get an E News letter from baby weekly each week.
I found this quite interesting... what are your thoughts?
Do you use commercial jar food, or do you cook your babies Food yourself from fresh fruit and vegies?
Do you buy your fruit and veg from the markets or the supermarket?
I get my fruit and veg delivered to me which is from the Melbourne Vic market.... I get it on my doorstep only a few hours after it's been purchased
It's as fresh as can be....
I make all of Daniels food from it and i buy any meat from the supermarket....
I sometimes get commercial food that i wouldn't cook up myself like 'tuna mornay' or just something different for a bit of variety..... I certainly don't have any problem buying them... I know there good for bub's... I just find it cheaper and I can make different veggie/meat/fruit varieties....
I'm happy with fresh fruit and veg for bub's.... I've done this with all of my kiddes and have not come across any probs :fingerscrossed:.... but it's very interesting about the nitrate level in some veg... I might have to go and have a little research....
Food for though eh?... Thank's for sharing hun x x
I forgot to mention that my brother also deals with fresh fruit and veg and delivers it to various outlets and he has always been of the opinion that Australia is by far the leading country in argicultural practises.... He swears by supporting our local growers not just for keeping the profits in Oz but what is also going into our bodies....
hmmm that sure is interesting!
i buy all the fruit and veg for the twins dinners from the markets, although i do get it from the supermarket or fruit and veg shop if i can't get into the city to the markets.
All my kids have always had their food made by me, thanks for posting that!!
I cooked my own with DD and will do the same again. She always had the same fresh fruit and vegies that we had. I am a big believer in fresh is best.
I used both, DD went through phases of liking mine and jars etc, so I just figured she was eating vegies so its all good.
Only ever fresh. The only packaged food he's had (besides formula) is rusks and arrowroot biscuits. It's so easy to make I don't understand why people rely so much on jar and tinned food (no judgement - just a thought).
thanks for your feedback.
I thought it was interesting.
Although we are not on solids yet, with DD1 I did both, if i was out and about I would take a jar with me. She was not a real fan of jar foods, and when i fell pregnant i could not stand the smell of them.
With DD2 I have tried both, and got bad reactions with both.. :rolleyes:hopeless  Niether reactions where anemia though, just a fussy tummy.
