Last week I had to go for a Centrelink Interview. It's just an update to make sure they have all the correct details and you're getting the correct amount.

As some of you may know, I have no contact with DS's Dad. I know who he is but for personal reasons he is not in anyway involved in our lives.

Well, I went in straight from work so had my business suit on with all my paperwork. They were going through my details and they came to the 'Father Unknown' part.
Now, here she said 'I can see that you have an exemption for claiming child support because the father is unknown. Is that because you were dating a few guys at the same time or did you have a one-night stand and not catch the guys name?'.:laughing:

I almost fell over laughing! It was halarious! I can't imagine what she must have thought! I don't know how she can ask that question with a straight face! I had to pause to gather myself before replying.

 So which one did you say it was?

I don't think she meant it to sound rude. She was a really nice lady and I think it was just a question that she had to ask.
I could possibly see the funn side to it because I know it's not true!

 So which one did you say it was?

Well, I kinda just said 'yeah' and nodded my head! I couldn't get much more out other than that, and also the thought of actually saying 'I dated a few guys at the same time' or 'I had a one night stand and didn't catch the name' was a little unnearving!

OMG she is so lucky it was you and not someone like me. I wouldve come out with something extremely rude back that the whole office could hear. Glad you could see the funny side of it.

I've been thinking about it and I think maybe they ask that question because if it was a few guys at the same time then they would make them all have dna tests to then claim child support. But with a one night stand they just leave it. Just a thought.

Well, they've never asked me for a list or any other details reg it.

I don't know. She was really helpful! I kinda found it funny. Maybe I'm just a little too easy going (I know a few people who would cough and laugh at that!!!)

Wow, I wouldn't have been able to see the funny side of that! That's a really personal and rude question that I do not think anyone from centrelink can ask!

Glad you thought it was funny though :D

I think you have a great attitude to laugh it off. I think she just had to ask that question, cause honestly it happens, if i continued my pregnancy from a one night stand i would have had no way of knowing how to even track this person down let alone any other details of him. So it does happen, hell the lady works at Centrelink how many different cases would see she day in day out of 'father unknown's' and the likely scenario is that they are one night stands or had multiple partners. I reckon i would have laughed too.

Just wanted to add if you have father unknown on your certificate, wouldn't that be automatically assumed that you actually don't know who the father is and possibly come into one of the two scenarios she asked specifically. Cause no offence but if you know who the father is i guess his name would be on the birth certificate.

Um - how RUDE!!! I would have said that the child was a result of rape and see how she reacted. People who ask questions like that should be made to feel just as uncomfortable as the way they are trying to make others feel!

:geek: That is me, and the computer is actually the woman's face, okay?
Man that is RUDE!!!! and she is NOT allowed to say that! If I had being allowed to go ahead and put father unknown on DSs birth certificate, and someone asked me that question, I would say, how dare you say something like that to me?! in my scary voice, and people get really scared of my scary voice, man I would have put the whole of Centrelink up in arms.:devil:

You have an extraordinary sense of humour, man, I would have found out where she parked her car and rammed it or something (so it's good that you don't have anger management problems lkike I do). Man she didn't even say it to me and I still want to go up to her and shout at her grrrrrrr!:banghead:
:hugs: Hope noone ever says something that horrible to you again:hugs:

Oh my gosh I have to say I'd probably laugh too..... especially if she wasn't actually being rude!

Wow, I didn't know they put "Father Unknown" on Birth Certificates anymore, or was it on something else from a previous exemption to claim CS??? P's is just blank because the ex refused to sign it.....

If you had a previous exemption to claim Child Support then I'm not sure why she would have cause to ask that question, unless you're case had changed, or I guess in the case of the review.....

That's a really personal and rude question that I do not think anyone from centrelink can ask!

From a totally technical perspective, of course its personal and of course they are allowed to ask.... Centrelink is in the business of collecting the most personal information to ascertain a persons eligibility for support..... the government aren't about to go handing out money willy nilly to people without gathering evidence first.... nor should they be expected to.... I'm sure all tax paying citizens would expect their money to be spent responsibly.....

I wouldn't be offended.... I would hazard a guess its a pretty standard question and I have nothing to hide!

DS's birth certificate does not say 'unknown'- it's just blank in the 'father' part.

She saw that I had an exemption from collecting child support, and there must be a reason button to tick because she knew the reason behind the exemption was because the father was unknown. So, I guess from that there can only be 2 options.....

I'm guessing there were other options other than 'Father Unknown', for example Domestic Violence, Rape etc

I know she didn't mean it rudely, so I didn't take it that way. She was just doing her job- it's not like she asked me in a really loud voice or with a condescending tone.
She asked me like she asked me any other question- like it was a run of the mill question which had run of the mill answers.

I think the reason why she has to ask this question is because there are alot of cases where mothers list the father as 'unknown' in order to collect more benefits.

I know someone who is actually living with the father but states that the father is unknown so she can get more money.

Just a thought.....

More than likely. I have to say, it really bugs me when people 'cheat' the system!

DS's dad took a while to put name on the certificate and they asked me if the father was known. I said "no" they said "so you have no idea who the father is?" I said "yes, I know who he is but I dont know him I thought he was this really nice guy but turns out he is a jerk, *tears started*" she said "oh ok its fine I just had to ask"

Damn pregnancy hormones!

I don't know...

I think the question was kind of funny.

I would have said..." yeah, one night stand... uni pub crawl.. last week of semester... you know the drill" *shrug*

Or I would have looked her straight in the eye and said

"Actually, I was drugged and raped at a nightclub, so no, I didn't catch his name." That would have put her in her place.

Hahaha, should have got out a photo of B and said, 'tell me, does he look like anyone you know? I'm still trying to locate him'!

:iagree: If they can live with the fact that they've denied their own child a father on their birth certificate, then have the extra money! I personally wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
