Hi sorry if this is a silly question, but i have just found out im 5 wks pregnant with baby #2 and with my 1st labour i almost ended up with an emergency c-section, he was delivered by vacume extraction and i ended up with a 3rd degree tear (OUCH!!) anyway i am still having problems with bowel movement etc (18 months later) and would like an elective c-section this time around. Im not in any private health cover and was wondering how much it would cost? I dont get my referral to the hospital until im 12 weeks so i cant discuss it until then, but any info now would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I don't know how much it would cost but your birth story sounds very similar to mine, however, I was very lucky in that my 3rd degree tear was only small and with physio I don't have any nasty consequences. On my final post natal check the doctor at the hospital advised that because of the 3rd degree tear I would be offered an elective c-section if I chose (I went public) which I'd assume would be free like the vb was.
Did you see a specialist physio after the birth and get any exercises to do? I had to do my bottom exercises (like pelvic floor only with your bottom :o ) for quite a while.

It should be absolutely free if you go public all the way

Hi Becs999,
Yes i had physio afterwards went for about 2 months still doing pelvic floor exercises regularly, it is improving but VERY slowly, i was never told i could have elective c-section after it tho thats good to know im worried they will say it isnt a "good enough excuse" for it.
Thanks phineas, you have both put my mind at ease!!

I'm having a public c/section this time round. But I had surgery to repair the damage from last time, the hospy said they don't like to let VB's happen after repair (fine by me!!).
I had a private gynae repair me in brisbane (couldn't face going back the public hospital where I had him). I asked if he could write me a letter stating that I had to have a c.section, unfortunately he said he couldn't, but a good hospital would do a c/section (which they are!). My gynae said if all else fails CRY :crying:!!! He reckons it works:laughing:
If you're going to a different hospital, get your notes from the birth, and any other doctors notes stating your case history. Also if you've had any PND let them know, as it might aid your case.
Best of luck:fingerscrossed:

oh yeah, you can have a private c/section even if you're not covered privately - as Medicare pays for a lot of it if you go private. Except for the hospital stay - whcih is not cheap. At least $650 per night.

Hi there,
You can get one done in a public hospital.
Just talk to your OB about your worries and hopefully you will be able to get it done in the public hospital. If not try a different OB!
I had an elective C/S because of previous birth trauma, i had a 2nd degree tear that wasn't stitched properly, and then went on to have it repaired which actually made it worst, i now have problems like you. There was no way i was going back for more tearing!!!
I wish you all the luck, and i hope you get your C/S
But you should definantly get it for free :)
You will qualify for an elective caesarean through the public system, you have a good enough reason.
good luck.

thank you, you too. I completely understand why you would want a c/s. Good luck

I had a 3rd degree tear with my 2nd and so I called my hospital (public) to ask if I could have an elective c/section for my next one and they said NO as it's not a good enough reason!! I have to go private for the next bubs.

Hi Pebilz,
Really they said NO why did they say that, surely it is a good enough reason???? Do you have any problems from your tear at all?
Oh no now im going to be worried :( i guess i will just have to wait 2 months before i can find out...
