View Full Version : Boy/Girl Inserts & General insert question

In our part conversion to cloth* I have been making pocket mcns. (As a sewer of about 30 years I'm too cheap to buy items that I can make much cheaper at home.) For the stuffing we usually use a hemp/bamboo blend but I'm finding that it just seems to get wet through at one end and nothing at the other (DS having boy bits 'n' all). I guess this kind of makes sense but I was wondering if it's worth making a stuffing that's got more layers around the front so it would be more suitable for a boy. Has anyone considered or done this before?

It's just that we are finding the inserts only last about an hour or so (this morning is was about 40 minutes) before they needed changing. From reading other threads the general consensus seems to be that bamboo is best for absorbency so I'm going to get some 100% bamboo to make some more stuffings.

We haven't done an overnighter yet - I am going to open the purse, free the moths, and buy a krap-katcher (as soon as I get my first pay after returning to work). I never thought of DS as a big wetter as a sposie would last for hours on him before we changed him.

*Unfortunately we can't 100% convert as DS is in childcare and they only do sposies but our goal is to be 100% cloth when he's not in childcare. :)

How many layers do you use at the moment?
My 2yo DS has 6 layers, 3 bamboo and 3 microfibre. I find that the microfibre helps to spread the wee a little but essentially he still only wets the front part.
With my DD2 who is 4 months i use 8 layers, she has a much bigger liquid deit than DS (surprise, surprise at 4m lol) she has 4 microfibre and 4 bamboo and hers soak up and down the insert.
Both combos last my kids about 3 to 4 hours but they have been as long as 6 when they sleep extra long etc.

Either 8 of just bamboo & hemp or a 4 layers wrapped around a microfibre insert.

Yep, I've made a couple of inserts that have one long bit, and a shorter bit that folds over at the front (ie making the front section twice as thick as the back). They work really well. :)

I don't suppose you've got a pic?

Bec ... I make Sam's night nappies with alot more bamboo at the front and the booster goes all the way up the front too (he's a tummy sleeper).

All up I have 10-12 layers .... 2 of microfibre and the rest of bamboo as Sam sleeps over 12 hours and I need something that lasts .... a sposie used to last all night but in the last few weeks he wets right through them ... so I need the extra layers.

No photos sorry, but the ones I have are an hourglass kind of shape with a bit shaped like the top half of the hourglass sewn to the top. You could also use two seperate boosters.... one "normal" length and one short and overlap them - might give you more versatility. :)

Great suggestions everyone - thanks so much.

I just have to wait for my first pay to buy some more bamboo
