Our problem is not DS 13 months falling asleep - that is fine. It is him waking and wanting to be picked up or held or whatever and crying during the night. The last 3 nights we have been doing controlled crying but I want to check if it sounds like we are doing it right.
When he wakes we let him cry for a few minutes before going in, maybe 3 mins or so. Then I go in, reach into the cot to give him a little cuddle and tell him "It's ok, Mummy's here". I then give him his dummy and lay him down and leave the room. If he doesn't want to go back to sleep he throws his dummy and stands up straight away but I ignore and continue out of the room. Then we let him cry for 5 mins before going in and doing the same thing. Next is 10 mins and he has always gone back to sleep before the 10mins are up. Wed night he did this early in the evening then slept from about 8.30 through to 6.45am. Same with last night. Thurs night he woke at 1.30am. He went back to sleep before the 10 mins. But then he was quiet for 25mins and started again. He kept having quiet peroids of 10mins, and I didn't know whether to start at 5mins again or leave him 10mins. That was a horrible night as once he was finally back to sleep for good just before 3am DH started snoring and I couldn't sleep! So I got around 3 hours that night. I just need to know if it sounds like we are doing the 'right' thing. We may get rid of the dummy but will try to get over this hurdle first. So far he is having one bad night, then a good one, then bad, then good. Is this normal? I now have a cold due to my body being so run down and I'd like to know there is some hope that he will 'get it' and start sleeping better.
