Thought I'd start a new thread as the other one is getting a bit too long :)

Update on me: Told my DH tonight I was considering eating some of the placenta. He went....well.....green around the gills and told me he thought I was taking this 'hippie thing' too far *sigh*

I did try to explain the benefits of it....He's really not listening to me ATM though, I'm feeling a TAD unsupported - especially as he told me that if he bursts out giggling in one of our hypnobirthing classes I'm not to get angry with him. I said to him "you're really not that into this, are you?" To which he replied "Hey, I'm coming to the classes, aren't I!" which is true - he is - but if he doesn't believe in it, can it really work for us as a birthing COUPLE?? Seriously - please answer my question if you can :) I'm not asking hypotheticals here....

DF - Oooh, exciting times, I'll have my fingers crossed for you over the weekend. I'm glad you're getting some relief with the hot water bottle :hugs:

Pixie - I don't think that MD has posted a birth story yet. Probably still baby mooning it with her little princess :) I wonder what said princess' name is! :D

Yay a new thread!!

Tam - I think MD's new baby is named Amelia as i saw that on her facebook pics pages, but i have yet to see a story too, hanging out for that one! :D Also with the lotus birth something i am seriously pondering, with the eating of the placenta though, do you cook it, or just eat it raw, cause i don't really eat anything 'meat' textured so i wouldn't really wanna stomach it, although for the health benefits i definately might consider it.

I've heard of people doing one of a couple of things - ie cooking it into something, or cutting a small (ie 50c sized piece) off and just holding it in their cheeks. What I thought I would do is dehydrate a part of it and crumble into capsules (you can buy empty capsules)....I think that I could handle that - other ways make me feel a little nauseous to think of, TBH.

Thanks for the info re: MD's little girl :)

Hi Tam and all you other lovely ladies

I thought I would pop in and say hello while I had a chance.

As most of you would know from other threads- im about 12 weeks pregant with my second bub :D DD is 17months old now! WOW where did that time go!

DD was birthed at the RBWH Birth Centre I was planning on having a water birth and had a strict birth plan set out however my midwife was away sick the day I went into labor and the Drs ended up forcing me to go into the labor and delivery as I was group b strep positive.

I was told I had to have syntocin and later ended up with an epidural which I did NOT need! I was threatened with a c-section as after 9 hrs of labour I was only 3cms dialated. The fact that I was not given the option of other pain relief before being told I needed an epi by the midwife and Dr amazes me. At the time I was in too much pain to think for myself.......

After my experience with Dr's and midwifes at the RBWH outside the birth centre (the birth centre was FABULOUS!!) I decided that for the birth of this little one I want to have a home birth so I know that there will be NO intervention unless it is really required.

I can't stand this get 'em in, get 'em out attitude that western medicine seems to have these days.

It really bothers me when I hear women talking about having PLANNED c-sections. I know it is a womans choice as to how she births her baby but I just dont understand how anyone could think that being cut across your stomach muscles and being stiched and stapled back up again would be less painfull than birth!!

A womans body is designed to give birth. We are not designed to be chopped in the middle.....

I still feel a huge amount of upset and anger when I think about DD's birth.

I went through all those months of lovely appointments with my 2 midwifes at the birth centre, yoga, active birth classes and countless books and DVD's about active labour, natural pain relielf, hypnosis etc...etc... Only to have a dr come in and take all my hopes and dreams away all because he couldnt be bothered staying around. He wanted me in and out as fast as possible.

I was strapped to a CTG monitor and made to stay on the bed. I was allowed in the shower after asking repeatedly for 2hrs.

My birth plan was extremly detailed right down to the dim lighting and the music I wanted playing as DD was passed into my arms. I did get my dim lighting but that was it. The whole labour the lights were on until about 4mins before DD came into the world.

I didnt get the hour of skin to skin contact I wanted. the whisked DD away and dressed her. I was injected to birth the placenta and then made to have a shower.

I think about it allot and honestly, it breaks my heart.

WOW- Sorry to ramble on!!

Well thats all from me

xoxo

Yes Amelia is Jessies baby princess's name. And she is bewdiful the pictures are gorgeous I got very emotional looking at them!

Tami you on Facebook?

Tami, I never know what to say to you, you are such an intelligent woman and so well thought all the time I figure you have all the answers well you do when I need help :D

Yes it's great he's going with you but why is he going? Is he just going because he feels like he should? Because if that's the only reason well what's the point? He needs to be going because he wants to learn more and use that knowledge to help you when the time comes.

my DH is the other end he is getting more and more wild in his thoughts to the whole process see the lotus birth thread for his latest outburst on what we're doing. I don't know really what to say are you both good communicators? I know my DH and I both are I do tend to get worked up and defensive very quickly if he disagrees with me lol. We had a week of circumcision talk. I point blank refused to discuss his reasons on why we should do it, but I had to give mine. He got very upset and said "I have reasons and opinions too and they are valid to me" so I listened. maybe you need to sit down and talk it out maybe it will take a long time. I know after nearly 2 weeks now only is DH starting to see why I am not happy to get JJ circumcised. I know this isn't about circumcision but I am using that as an example of different views and communication.

We're very much a "unit" we made our baby together we're giving birth "together" as much as possible. I hope you work it out I know it's very important to you. :hugs:

Sorry if that makes no sense I do ramble and go off on tangents, not very good at just getting to the point :D

I would like a lotus birth. At the very least drain the cord first. Hubby doesn't get all these things that make sense to me. Not sure what to do when they don't WANT to get it.
He is okay, he does listen to me. He gets the idea of a minimal medical attention during pregnancy and birth. He is not too sure of a homebirth though he will agree if there is a midwife there. I would prefer a doula if anything.

Love My Bub, I am sorry to hear of you birth with #1, i was booed into the birhtcenter at RWBH and was told at 31 weeks that my middie had left and that they couldnt get a replacment, so into the 'normal' hospie system i went...... didnt end up with a "bad" birth but still not exactly what i was after. Goodluck this time round.

DF good luck i hope you let us know as soon as you can!! i am so exceited for you, i hope it is all on it way and you met your little man soon:)

Kymmy hubby isnt supportive at all for a lotus birth either, and when i suggested just having a douls he 'hit the roof' but i figure i have time HAHA, we found our middie, now i just need to decide what i want to do with the placenta, i want to eat some, but he flips when i mention it, i figure i am going to talk to my middie to see what she thinks, then decide cause once i decide thats what will happen, and i just ned to work my lady magic to get my way (HAHA)

has anyone heard from Dragonfly?

What's the bet she woke up this morning with a baby in her bed. Instant co-sleeping! :D
She was probably opening up to 6cm dialation yesterday as she was on here typing about her back ache LOL

Tam-you-are I've heard of a woman freezing the placenta and that swallowing a few frozen bits every day for a couple of weeks.

Aww, pixie that's a lovely example of how spouses come together. Thanks for that. I have fears that having DH present with me in labour might impede the progress. I'm hoping that somehow he can come in for the actual crowning and birth (obviously I have some issues to work through there) Hell! We only just agreed to be TTC (:smiliedance:)
LOL at your hubby having "outburst" I gotta read that thread :D

Love My Bub My heart breaks for you. It's birth rape. I've heard many women say that's how it feels (getting jabbed with drugs to force the placenta out *shudder* that aint right )
Here's to having an empowered birth :goodvibes:

Hi Mixy, V8 and Kymmy

*slinks off back to lurkdom never to be heard from again*

ME- TTC #2, plan to freebirth, DH and I never talk anything through (he's a tough nut) we talk about the experiences of others (in media etc..) that's how I get my feedback I'm after (birth was a trauma for him me thinks. Story is in sig below). I can't approach him direct, unfortunatly. However he's supportive of freebirth, just working out the logistics troubles me - Will he be present whole labour long? What will we do with DS?
In labour, I think it will help me to relax and lose my inhibitions if I pretend I'm the only person on earth. I think i'm going to have to freebirth completely solo...but I don't want DH to miss out on the birth (what to do, what to do?? )
Anyhoo, I do need him for one thing - make the baby in the first place! (and maybe fill the birth pool ssshh LOL)

Tami - Aaaah yes the looks of dread & the likes are always wonderful arent they ! I got so many with DP but he ended up reading the books ( even though he whinged & i really wondered if it was worth it ! ) but in the end he came through in such a way he astounded me. I think once they realise what you want & what you need when in labour it really does change things.

If that doesnt work i will kick him up the bum ! lol !

Apprentice Momma, is there anymore news on DF yet? I feel as anxious as if it were my own birth!!

What I thought I would do is dehydrate a part of it and crumble into capsules (you can buy empty capsules)
That is a good idea. Hadn't thought of that.
I was going to kinda cut off tiny chunks and freeze them, and swallow as much as I could each day, iykwim.
I don't think I could handle eating it. Actually no, I KNOW I couldn't handle eating it :o But can definitely just swallow it!

Did someone say something about ripping placentas out? Not sure, I was only skimming as I was looking for DF news :o
After my 2nd birth, I was given the injection, and I swear the midwife waited all of 30 secs, then she started pulling on the cord. Then she got someone else in to help and I remember the two of them pulling on it, like it was a rope in tug-o-war
They got it out and I lost approx 1.5L of blood afterwards. Uternine atony apparently but I wonder if maybe it has to do with them ripping it out?

AM
02-02-2008, 19:10
Nothing so far....chewing my fingers here...

Ummm....I cannot for the life of me understand why pulling on the umbilical cord was EVER seen as a good thing...(where is the head banging icon?)

MoonstoneMumma
02-02-2008, 19:17
Best of luck DF

pulling on cords - i saw this happen at one of my latest births. the dr had to stitch the mum (for a totally un-necessary epi) and didn't want to wait around until the placenta came out natural. my mum then lost about 1.4Ls of blood. makes me so angry!

kymmy

My Mum had me on the beach, she said the worst part was having a nurse push on her stomach to get the placenta out. The nurse (just a fellow camper on the beach) insisted that is what you are meant to do. But its sure wasn't comfy for my Mum.

Hopefully we all wake up to some lovely news of a birth :)

Regarding eating the placenta... my midwife is going to make up capsules for me - I think she said she dehydrates it and then grinds it up. She is a herbalist/naturopath and said she can also make up a tincture (or whatever you call it, lol) for bub too. I said yes to the capsules for me, but no for bub, I don't like the idea of giving bub anything than boob unless totally necessary.

Well done MammaDragonfly! Welcome to the world, Phoenix. Can't wait to hear the story, DF.

re the placenta thingy - you preserve more of the delicate hormones and other chemicals by freezing it rather than drying it. Some of the ones that do so much good are extremely fragile and easily destroyed. Fresh is best, then frozen, then dried.

Very exciting about DF, I hope she is ok with her transfer, and very glad she got her VBAC in spite of it :yelclap:

As for me, I am in no hurry. Isn't it strange with a first bub you hope they will come early and can't wait, and with the second you know what you are in for so are fine with going 'overdue'... or is that just me?

Think I am 38 weeks now.... lots of niggles and cramps and BH contractions, but nothing serious. DS1 was 7 days past my 'EDD', so I expect similar this time.

How is everyone else going??

Hey everyone...

How are we all? Is DF alright? I'm guessing she transferred but it sounds like she still got a VBAC? Regardless I think she is an absolute legend, it would have been so hard to stick to her guns about getting the birth she wanted and I think she did a remarkable job. :hugs: for you DF.

Well...Duchy, Shady, Demeter and Me. All due around the same time now hey? I'm with you Shady, I'm in absolutely no rush for bub to come out. In fact knowing that it's all going to happen within the space of a few weeks is a little...daunting. But I'm really excited about the birth, really looking forward to it. :smiliedance:

Dealing with this heat is tough but I kind of anticipated it. Basically just been hanging around waiting for DH to come home, flys in on Wednesday morning :cloud9: And hoping nesting is going to kick in soon so I can get a few things done around the house...I can't even be bothered washing the baby stuff  Arrrgghhh...so much to do!

*big waves*

Hi ladies! Unfortuantely, as it seems you've heard, I have no freebirth story to tell, however, I am not at all disappointed with the way things turned out, I got what I ultimately wanted, a baby came out of my vagina! I couldn't be happier, and to my surprise, thanks to a wonderful middie on duty at the hospital, I didn't even have to fight to get what I wanted, I was allowed to labour, just like any other woman, alone, without machines attatched to me and most of all I was active!

Only downside was they wanted me in for 48hours as I didn't have the GBS swab they wanted to monitor Phoenix, which was fine by me really, although I would have liked to have been home earlier!

This is just a copy and paste of a quick run down, i'll get the full details later on, too tired at the moment!

Don't have the brain capacity to write up my birth story yet, but will get to it soon, I promise!

But short version is, early labour started at 3pm'ish Friday, by 2am'ish Saturday I was having contractions 10-15mins apart, by 10am'ish Saturday I was having contractions 2-3mins apart...all back labour (again) I might add and sooooo painful!

I was in my birth pool by around 9am'ish so that was nice and it was really helpful too! By the afternoon, I was in incredible amounts of pain, but was coping with it all but as I had no idea of my progress when I started getting the urge to push every few contractions, and never feeling that urge before, it freaked me out, as I had no idea if it was "safe" to push or not. So around 2pm'ish I made the decision to head to the hospital.

Arrived, was seen to, checked over, and was 5cm dilated, WOO! I was absolutely stoked that I had progressed so much at home. After being told that my chance of VBAC was low, and that this baby most likely wouldn't fit due to CPD (I was rolling my eyes while the middie said this) and that I should prepare for another c-section, and after being told all the "rules" that apply to VBAC women and what not, I was taken to the delivery suite, where I found the same middie who had just told me all these horrid things, was actually really, reallu supportive, so methinks she just had to cover her bum.

I had barely any monitoring, most of which was done while I was pushing anyway so wasn't restrictive, I was allowed to walk around, shower, do what I wanted which was fantastic!

After a long labour, and an hour'ish of pushing, Phoenix finally made his way into this world with a gush and I managed to escape with just a graze and a 2nd degree tear which I requested not be stitched.

So far i'm comfortable and pain free, breastfeeding is going swimmingly, although still awaiting milk, and I LOVE the fact that a baby came out of my vagina, and I showed it to ALL of the staff that told me that DD got stuck due to CPD and then I went on to have a bigger baby ;)

Offical stats were...

Phoenix Michael born 11:14pm 2nd Feb
weighing in at 4.160kg or 9lb3oz
52cm long
35cm head
and perfect!

WAY TO GO DF!!!!!!!

Welcome earthside little man, such a great story, you really are a trooper Dragonfly and if you find yourself feeling a weeny bit proud SO YOU SHOULD!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry still no birth story from me! My DH went back to work on day three (what a day to go back with the day three blues and bruises!!!) - needless to say life has been a bit hectic with the three little duckies on my own!!

Going well though

Will try and write it up now if I can

Tami, I never know what to say to you, you are such an intelligent woman

Dragonfly, you are a powerful woman! Well done for staying with it and achieving your goal - a baby out your very own, specially made vagina :D Fantastic.

As I've said elsewhere DF, congrats! Woooo!

All is well for me, cruising along beautifully. 22 weeksish and bub is moving loads, can feel her kicking from the outside. Even my family and friends are starting to become supportive of the fact I'm staying home without a mw, so that's a pleasant unexpected surprise.

Yep Duchessa that is her
Now we start the journey.....she said she would be privileged to attend my birth. :goodvibes:

Very trusting in birth, she takes on breeches and twins confidently, she has never had to resuss a baby at one of her HBs, she doesn't bring oxygen, only a bag thingy....she has a 3% c/sec rate.

The thing that struck me the most is that she was a lay midwife for 30 years, she decided if she wanted to be actively involved in homebirth activism she had better get her registration so she completed her degree and training only last year, she had to attend 47 births in hospital as part of the training and she said she would cry her eyes out after every shift in the car on the way home. I just found that struck me because it shows how passionate she is about HB and obviously how different HBs are compared to what she witnessed at hospital. Totally the opposite to the sacred, spiritual births she has attended her whole career.

She attends conferences and speaks publicly at forums etc.

Anyway I could rave on forever :D

Congrats again dragonfly, I so happy that you go the vaginal birth you did such great preparation for

Stellarella that's awesome news about your middy! Woo hoo!

Things are moving along here. I think I've been getting BHs without realising it after talking to my doula today who described her own as tightenings where the belly turns egg shape. We have definitely been witness to egg shaped belly over the past little while.
And on Monday I had a big vomit and runny poo which I know have been signs of early labour for others...so I am preparing myself for the possibility of having a baby sometimes in the next couple of weeks

Today I also made plans to go to a social gathering next week with a friend. Now, as Murphy is God (as in Murphy's law rules the universe) and I am really looking forward to this social gathering I suspect that I will go into labour that morning :p

Thanks for all the wonderful congrats ladies :D

Demeter - OOoOO sounds promising hun! I hope you're not kept waiting too much longer to meet your little one!

And Tam, as for looking so good...you'd look damn happy too if you just pushed a baby out of your vagina when only hours before hand you were told it would be nearly impossible to do ;)

I feel quite lucky in the scheme of things and am almost grateful that the hospital initially told me to basically forget about a vaginal birth.

It sounds odd I know, and while I HATE the fact that they tell women this bullsh*t, for myself, i'm glad that they did because it then pushed me to explore other options such as home/freebirthing, and while I didn't go ahead with the freebirth, I have gained SO much knowledge about birth and womens bodies and how they work during labour, and i've learnt so many truths that I would never have known otherwise, if I hadn't of been told "no" at the hospital.

So again, while I ended up in the hospital, and while it was by choice in the end, I felt strong enough in my knowledge to get the birth that I wanted and not be pushed into anything I KNEW wasn't necessary.

I actually said to DH on the way there, that if they tried to tell me any bullsh*t then I would up and leave and I would come back home. I also think the middie realised that I knew some of what I was talking about, with some of the conversations we had, so that was nice too.

Either way, while I didn't freebirth this time around, I should have taken it a step at a time really, I should of homebirthed, then went on to freebirthing, simply because I had never given birth naturally before, and that's what really stuffed me up.

So next time, I definitely intend on staying home, now I know for certain, 100% that I can give birth naturally (and to a "big" baby!) I now feel even more confident within myself and my body.

I'm still extatic that I laboured at home for as long as I did, and I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience really! yep, despite being in the hospital...ohhh it pains me to say that LoL

DF, i think you did great. And i enjoy reading your post-birth musings as its good to see that even though your location changed, your outcome didn't and i'm glad that you now have confidence in yourself that you can do it, and possibly doing it again later at home. :) YAY!! And yeah for labouring at home for so long is also a great thing. If i have learned anything from last time it is to stay at home as long as possible, and now that i will have a midwife there if anything should arise at the birth i will be confident in staying home in working through things or upon her advice will go to hospy if it warrants it. So yeah definately knowing this have a better chance than last time gives myself confidence that i can do, and for hearing stories like yours! Hooray!!

08-02-2008, 15:22
Dragonfly you did amazingly! Or rather...womaningly :D I am in awe of any woman who can get the birth she wants and go to hospital. It's an amazing triumph! And I'd be ecstatic with the result too.

Update here is that I believe my baby's head has engaged. My belly is lower today than it was yesterday, it's very hard to walk, and there's a lot of pressure and weight at the bottom of the belly. Sounds like head engagement to me?
I mentioned in another thread that I have quite the "cowboy swagger" going today :)

Lillynix
08-02-2008, 15:47
OOoOo definitely sounds like bubs head has engaged to me Demeter! Sounds exactly like what I was like with DD once she was engaged, hopefully things start moving for you soon :D

And I reckon I could give your 'cowboy swagger' a run for it's money! At the moment, when I walk I look like i'm still riding a horse LoL

Last 2 days i've been very sore from my perineal tear, but still glad I didn't get it stitched, the thought of stitches "down there" just freak me out! I was first told it was a 2nd degree tear, but then I was told a 1st...so who knows! But either way, everything is feeling very tight and I have a pulling sensation when I walk/sit, hoping it's all a good sign and that things are healing, i'm too scared to look :o

*big waves*

Hi girls,

Just a quick one from me before I have to go watch Bottletop Bill and his best friend Corky . I haven't been posting much, but I have been reading most days.

DF, I said congrats before you came back, but not since you posted, so congrats again. I am so glad you are happy with your birth experience :). Your little boy is beautiful, if I had a girl I wanted to name her Phoenix, but DP wouldn't come to the party on that one.

Well I am officially over it. Up until now I had been happy for this babe to take its time in arriving as I still remember with my DS, in the first couple of weeks I wondered why I complained about pregnancy as it was much easier than a newborn :o. But now I am done with it. Bubs head is engaged (which I didn't think happened often second time around?) and my already unstable pelvis is now horrific. And DS doesn't understand why I can't play with him much and spends much of his time bored. I just want it over with now.

Still 9 days until my official 'EDD' and up until now I have been hoping to go 'over' if anything, but now earlier is fine. Except my sons support person goes away in a few days until the day after my EDD, so its a bit of a catch 22 I suppose.

Anyhoo, enough rambling from me. Hope everyone else is keeping well and comfortable!

xo

Geeze SC, sounds like you are having a pretty average time right now. I hope that things either pick up or you come early. It is definitely a lot more taxing being pregnant with children than pregnant without, hey? "This too shall pass" as my mother reminds me when I am having a bad time.

Mixy, your visit sounded great! I'm glad it went well and you are getting along.

DF, it has been great to follow your story and hear your post partum musings. You did such a wonderful job.

How are you going Demeter?

We had a big day in our household yesterday - the midwife visited (and it only took her 2.5 hours to get here which is 1/2 an hour shorter than I thought), we moved into the upstairs of our house, which we have been renovating since October (and where I plan to birth in two and a half weeks), and my little girls turned the big THREE! They are so pleased with themselves. They had a gorgeous day, moved into a rather huge, brand new bedroom (well, they each moved into their own, but then they had a massive change of heart so we shifted them back together), lovely party etc. They were so grateful it was very touching, and when I tucked them in to bed they both put their little arms around my neck and said thank you for a "Yummy day" *melt*.

Anyways, midwife visit went very well. She dropped off the birth pool, went over the pertinent points once again for if we birth before she arrives, went over once again our plans for if the babe remains transverse, did the health check (110% good)... It was a good visit.

Belly babe is still transverse and sitting very high, curved under my ribs, posterior. I have decided against an external version but am very committed to every other method in the book :D While I am not worried, it would be nice if she would just tuck that chin in, nestle down and assume the position...

What do you do when the baby is born in the caul? I saw a birth video and the baby was kinda born in the caul, it actually broke as the baby shot out but what happens if it doesn't break on it's own. Who should break it and when....how much time is there to remove it? I suppose it's like a waterbirth and you just gently remove the sack once the baby is fully born????

Just pondering.. :)

Tam-I-Am
12-02-2008, 11:46
As far as I understand it, the baby won't start breathing until it is exposed to air...so I would ASSUME (but don't really know!) that there wouldn't be any real urgency if it was born in the sac....and what a lovely, gentle introduction to the world!

Off topic - but the old Celtic legends used to say that children born with a caul were born with rare luck, or the 'Sight'....:)

Horses start chewing and licking it off as soon as the foal is out, but sometimes they can take about 7 or 8 minutes to get the face free, and the foal is always fine :)

LoL can just see the headlines now...

'Mother Chews Baby Out Of It's Caul' :p

Everything I read stated there was no urgency to get bub out of the sac, you just gently break it open once bub is born, using either your fingers, scissors etc...

I wonder how many babies would be born in the caul if it weren't for routine rupturing of membranes in the hospital... *ponders*

kymmy
12-02-2008, 13:17
Do you think it (being born in the caul)would be more common if hosp didn't rupture? Its suppose to be a good luck!
My waters broke each time on their own. Usually not long before birth.

Tam-I-Am
12-02-2008, 13:22
Everything that I've been reading lately has been telling me that the longer the membranes remain intact, the better for all parties involved - its a cushier ride out for the bub, and the contractions are contracting on a water cushion, rather than on baby and muscle etc...

I think that it was fairly uncommon for a baby to be born with membranes intact even before amniotomies became commonplace....but I have to think that it wouldn't be SO unheard of it amniotomies weren't 'nearly' routine.

Shanaynay
12-02-2008, 13:33
When DD2 was born, my waters didn't break till I was ready to push, so when she was born, she still had heaps of sac on her, and so she kinda slipped out

I don't think it's common though, to be born still in the sac, even if ARM rates were lower, hence the Celtic legends etc...

Horses start chewing and licking it off as soon as the foal is out, but sometimes they can take about 7 or 8 minutes to get the face free, and the foal is always fine :)

Hope I can clarify this for you all.

I have foaled down 100's of mares over the past 20 years and it is reasonably common for a foal to be born in full membranes. But, on the rare occasion someone hasn't been there to witness or assist in the birth, if the foal is born completely encased, it is nearly always dead. Occasionally a foal may kick the membranes open but this will usually cause suffocation as the membranes will flop down over the nostrils.

I love horses dearly but haven't ever seen one break the membranes with her teeth, although they nearly always begin licking the foal as soon as they turn around to it which could help to break it. Unfortunately our domestic horses need human assistance more often than not when birthing.

There is a window of probably 2 minutes maximum to get the membranes open.

:)

I would imagine there is a link between the tendon problems and being born in the membranes. Most foals "break free" of the membranes during birth but if the foal was unable to extend his forelegs sufficiently to do so, that may explain it.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, ladies. Just something that is a part of my everyday life and I couldn't go past it.:D

How are you going with planning your homebirths Pixie and V8? Did you end up finding a decent midwife Pixie?

I'm starting to get a little nervous about labour pain, but trying to stay positive. I think I've been having BH but not really sure what its like. Sometimes my tummy gets tight, it sort of feels like the baby is turning, but different. I don't get any pain just a tightening sensation. Is this BH?

Does that mean you're freebirthing? I know what you mean though, I've got my main midwife but there's a chance I'll end up with a different midwife for the birth. I just don't care as long as I have this baby naturally!

Maybe you should move to France for the birth! LOL I saw Michael Morre's Sicko a while ago. The French health system provides home help after the birth for free I think.

Wow...haven't been on for a while and how things have gotten away from me!

Hope everyone is progressing nicely with their bubbas and their plans for homebirth/freebirth! Everything is going nicely back here, we are just hanging around waiting for bub to decide when she would like to arrive. DH has been awesome, organising everything for the birth room and sorting things out at home...thank god for him because I would never have got it done!!! :D Set up the pool the other day when it was stinking hot...it was bliss! I am going to LOVE being in that pool!!!

My news isnt as happy, I went into labour yesterday at 15 weeks after having an ultrasound on Tuesday confirming that our baby had died a couple of weeks ago. So I had a homebirth just without the ending I had wished for

Hello everyone - I have been a bit absent - just enjoying Amelia and her siblings to be honest. And their daddy too actually!! Although not quite in that way :)

KB - I am thinking of you and I am so sorry to read about your loss. It is hard to portray to others just how much it hurts inside to have to labour with no babe to hold at the end. I lost one at 14 weeks and that was awful too. Happy Healing my love, make the right choices about how to grieve as this is a big part of your future journey! Much Love Jess

Dem - isn't it a funny thing, life and death. Right next to the birth of your beautiful little girl is the loss of another (in the thread that is) - so each time that you snuggle in the warmth and that beautiful, velvet crown of your girl, know that she is extra special!!!

Well done you for having the birth experience that you wanted, and enjoy your early days of motherhood! They just FLY past!!!

Much Love to both of you and t'others too

I have been trying to talk about homebirth with hubby - not to pressure him or anything. Just so he can see its normal and not scary. Yesterday he told me he doesn't want me to talk about the birth which upset me a lot. :( He said it makes him feel uncomfortable.
Then last night he starts talking about being Amish. Yeah I know weird, ... he is weird! He is interested in the way they live and was looking it up online and he found that they believe in homebirth and not in medical intervention in general. I said "Yes, lets become Amish." :p

No idea sorry...

Kymmy, thats funny about your DP... sometimes I think they can't win. I get frustrated because mine is soooo relaxed about homebirth. Which IS good, but he hasn't done any of the reading or research or anything that we women tend to do, he just thinks 'birth is normal'.

He said something interesting yesterday, now I am getting the annoying 'is anything happening yet?' calls from everyone, I got this one from my mother yesterday (I had DS1 in a birth centre and didn't tell anyone I was in labour because they all wanted to come and wait at the door ):

Her: "Are you still hanging on?"

Me: "Yep"

Her: "Nothing happening at all?"

Me: "Nope"

Her: "You should be ready to pop by now"

Me: "Its not even technically my 'due date' until tomorrow and already I am sick of everyone hassling me"

Her: "Well I don't care what everyone else does, I am your mother so I am allowed to hassle you"

So I said something along the lines of "What are you going to be like if I have another 60 hour labour?"

Her: "Well I would hope that 'whats her name' (that would be my midwife!) 'wouldn't let you' go on that long"

Me: "Why not?"

Her: "Well it just can't be good for your body"

More  from me and I just bit my tongue.

Anyhow, when I relayed the conversation to DP, straight up he just said "because unnecessary surgery is always good for your body right?"

I luff him sometimes :D

Anyhoo, nothing much to report here still. Lots of pre-labour.... some pretty strong but irregular contractions this morning, but they have eased off again. Off to have a nanna nap now... gotta stay rested ;)

How is everyone else doing?

Well done V8 on reaching the third trimester. I am almost over the first. This pregnancy is going to go quick.

Do many men read up about birth?

Do many men read up about birth?

Mine has to some degree. He read 'Labour of Love' by Gabby Targett (he found it really easy to read and informative) and I have given him sections of 'Birthing from Within' to read, mainly the ones that apply to him. Not to mention he listens to me waffle on at every opportunity

Shady I can sympathise with the phone call business. I honestly thought it wouldn't start until at least AFTER my 'due date'. But no, here we are 5 days off it and people are already getting their knickers in a knot. I refuse to play along though, I tend to do the clueless 'I'm fine, why do you ask' response...it really bugs them

We just set up our birth room :smiliedance:I'll take some piccies tonight and post them. I cannot wait to get into that pool, it is so f*cking comfortable!!!

Duchessa
18-02-2008, 13:00
I sympathise with the phone call thing too. But honestly, your mother Shady! My eyes were rolling so hard reading that exchange I nearly fell off my chair! And good on MrShady for the comment :D

I was getting some strange phonecalls last month, then I went to a staff party for dh's work a couple of weeks ago and every one was saying things like "Wow, you must be so sick of it", "Anything happening yet?" etc and telling me all those woe begone overdue stories... A little later I worked out that dh told everyone I was due on the 28th of Jan

Kymmy, my dh has skimmed a fair few books that I have had around and he has read the emergency childbirth manual. I babble on to him about as much birth related stuff as I can manage - and try to keep him up to date. If I leave a book around he will usually flick through it. Maybe you ought to tell him that the Amish talk about birth all the time as well as being pro homebirth ;)

I'm feeling pretty ripe. I have had two bouts of pretty heavy false labour - one last night that nearly had me convinced, and a little show, but I don't think I'll come quite yet...

I have to drive to the osteo by myself tomorrow (it is a two hour each way trip, with no mobile phone coverage) and am having second thoughts as to the wisdom of it, but I can barely walk at the moment (don't say a WORD, SC! *glare!*) and I am having a bit of trouble looking after the girls (dh is away today which makes it even worse)... I am petrified of getting stuck at the hospital end of the journey! Imagine that

Ikis yikes Eliza was like that, then whilst in labour popped out to 2/5 lol

Men reading, well my DH reads a lot he actually sends me many articles he has found, and thinks I might enjoy anything to do with parenting in general. He also says he learns from Eliza and finally after close to 2 years says he has instinct as a father and he is very excited about the homebirth. I never pushed him to read just happens I guess Kymmy.

Does anyone know where I could find a list of "must haves" for home-birthing I mean things like Birth pool, plastic sheeting etc just to give me some ideas on what I need to prepare.

Jeremiah is currently breech and lordy it' so un-comfy how can people not know the baby is head up lol I just got asked how long I have to go by the grocery delivery guy he looked surprised :D

Hi Ladies

I'm another due today and am having a homebirth. Over the past few weeks have had contractions come and go but they never seem to stick. Have tried a few things to encourage this labour but contractions always die away to light cramping. With any luck it's all getting me ready. My midwife tells me we can go 40 wks 10 days for a safe homebirth, if we reach 41 wks she wants to make an appt with the OB.
Today is 40 wks so i'm really hoping bub decides on coming soon.

ikis84
19-02-2008, 15:43
Oh Mrs. O, that room looks fantastic! I wish I had space to do that kind of thing... I think I will probably set the pool up in the lounge room, but after seeing that, maybe I should clean the study up and put the pool in there! That looks ace!

Veronica, that sucks that your midwife wants you to see an Ob at 40+10!

Here are some labour vibes for you ~~~~

AM
19-02-2008, 15:51
Veronica, how do you feel about 'having' to see an Ob at 41 weeks? Do remember that your mw is simply a consultant you have hired, she does not call the shots, you do.

Personally I would never see an OB at 41 weeks, I would wait until 42 weeks, then if I felt it were warranted, perhaps begin some monitoring to ensure everything was fine - and that could be simply my mw monitoring with a doppler more often, or it could be non stress testing in a hospy.

Can I ask, are you going through a publicly funded system?

daisy4300
19-02-2008, 19:36
Homebirth is government funded up here in the NT.
My midwife is pretty good and would be happy monitoring at home as long as we can. She said that 40 wks +14 days is generally when we go to see the OB and thats really just to make sure things are ok and a bit more monitoring from my understanding. She said we'll look at making the appt I think around 41 wks. I'm happy at this stage to go with the flow and if it means getting an OB's opinion then i'm ok with that, just to make sure everything is fine and will go from there. I am fairly sure everythings fine though as i still feel him moving but i am wondering whether my labour may need some assistance this time with it stopping all the time.

Love the room Mrs O - and that birth pool brings back so many memories!!!

Veronica - I went over by 12 days and it was a good strip and stretch (2 actually) that got things going for me

Upside down babies! Oh yeah a breech is very ordinary feeling that is for sure *turn bubba turn*

Things I needed the most - birth pool, good oils, the right music for me (Tibetian Meditation Music), lucozade and wincy incy snacks that you don't feel you are going to bring up but give you a bit of energy, chapstick, oil or body butter for massage, PVC tablecloths turned upside down and taped to the floor to 'accept' mess! Oh and lots of towels!

Can't think of anything else at the mo

Mrs O - Your room looks absolutely devine, i love that it's all enclosed and the candles look beautiful. I was going to have my pool set up in the kitchen/dining/lounge so it's on tiles, but now i'm thinking it may be better in it's own room. I was just thinking it's easier so i can get the pool filled up! lol Lovely room though, just perfect.

Pixie - I have copied and pasted this list for homebirths from somewhere else, hope its ok.

Birth Supplies - Mama
birth pool - hose and attachments for easy filling, urns for instant hot water, buckets for easy removal of water for adding in hot
sieve for poo scooping
pile of old towels, cloth nappies
wheaty heaty, hot water bottles
rolling pin for back pressure
drop sheets for under the pool, under the sheets on your bed.
bowl for catching the placenta also an appropriate bag if you’re planning a lotus birth
bendy straws
labour-ade drinks and food
Emergency Essence and other flower essences or homeopathics as desired
ice lollies for sucking in between cx
birth ball, a bunch of cushions/pillows
heater for when baby arrives to keep the air warm enough
fan for hot labouring mama
ice chips, packs, for eating and pain relief
mirror for the bottom of the birth pool and torch to help you see it
large garbage bags
drop sheets or cheap shower curtains
lip balm
scent-free massage oil
squirt bottle for soothing the perineum for the first post-birth wee
pads for lochia
Joyous hint: Make up two sets of sheets with a plastic sheet in between and then after the birth have your support people whip off the top layer and voila! clean sheets for instant bliss

Carers - DH, doula/birth attendant, midwives
list of ph nos for all concerned so people can phone without asking you who or when to call if you're in labourland
soap, hand towel and nail brush
camera and/or video plus spare batteries and film
pile of videos/dvds/amusements for older children
Joyous tip: food for attendants - it's nice to check what their preferred beverage is beforehand and stock it

Baby bundle
fluffy towel for waterbirth babies
hot water bottle to heat it all up before bubs arrives
hat
outfit (actually I think skin on skin is best but if you must dress them...)
receiving blanket
nappy
a present from the baby to your older child
Joyous tip: keep in a basket all together for ease of transport around the house and in case of transfer to hospital

Finally, a good bottle of sparkling wine and some cake to really celebrate that Birth Day!

Thanks Jess and Vee, I must invest in some cheap sheets and towels. Of course anything old we had we gave away or threw out when we emigrated so everything is new presently.

Birth pool I don't "think" I am getting one. I like the idea but I can't bear the thought of being in the water with one tiny bit of kaka floating around me, but we shall see, time will tell!

Ikis you look bewdiful I have a shot from today but it's full nudity so don't think I'll post it lol you can't see anything wude though. I'd show it to my dad it's that tame :D Very tasteful.

I bought Eliza a book on the new baby arriving in it the baby is born in a hospital but we have changed the words when we read it. I bought it yesterday and both Dh and myself must of read it 20 times since then she loves it, we have to rush the whole book to the birth bit where she looks at the page of it being weighed and measured for ages...interesting to see what's going on in her mind :)

well I think baby J has turned I feel like I can breath a little better!

I was just reading a birth story natural home-birth, and she was saying how her two birth partners pushed her pelvis together to help the baby descend and it also helped relive some of the pain from the contractions she was on her knees, and when the baby was born it was covered in thick vernix and the birth support people told her to rub it on her skin, she said no thanks so the birth partner rubbed it into her own skin apparently it makes for a great lotion. So there you go.

SO add rubbing vernix into your skin a must do maybe before the placenta smoothie :goodvibes:

Pixie, you ought to try to get your hands on a copy of "hello baby". It is such a beautiful read, it brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. And the girls just love it.

Ikis, your belly is looking terrific.

MrsO, I told you elsewhere but that room looks bloody gorgeous.

I am really well. I am nearly 40 weeks and just loving these last however many days of pregnancy. I was induced with the twins so I have never had the joy of waiting for my body to reach the tipping point. I just love it! It is such a peaceful feeling to be ready to birth here at home and sharing these last days with my first children, who seem so much more precious somehow, now that we are so close to becoming a family of five.

Welcome Katy - Not long to go!

Me. Still not much to report. Midwife visit today - bub very happy in there. Getting quite excited now, would really like to meet her. Just tired, trying (mostly unsuccessfully ) to get some sleep. Attempting to fend off family interference, trying to stay calm when we don't succeed :D

Duchy - Love your work as always. Glad to hear everything is going perfectly for you, enjoy!

Hi girls,

I thought i would pop in and say hi,i am hoping that after my last two births(with drugs) that i will be able to have a natural waterbirth.

With my last two i was induced due to diabetes,i was strapped to the monitor both times and #1 was not an active birth at all.I suffered big time with the pain and ended up opting for an epidural :( i don't want that this time and im going to fight for a homebirth.

Im going for a bt tomorrow to check for diabetes to see if i still have it as my doc seems to think that from the weight i lost that i don't have it anymore.

Going to contact Community Midwife W.A and see where i stand.

Wish me luck

We picked up the La Bassine yesterday, blew it up last night. It was pretty funny, DH was trying to do it with a foot pump because he was too scared to go into the shed due to the spiders to get the electric pump. I felt sorry for him so went and got it myself, lol.

I can't wait to use it... it looks so comfy! I am so short too, I can even stretch my legs out fully in it! We are having a practice run at filling it tonight.. I'll post some piccies!

I have been getting heaps of strong BH's and cervical pains that it has made us get our butts into gear getting things organised! I have a load of baby clothes in the washing machine right now!

Congrats to the ladies that had their bubs :)

I went to the docs today for my bloods and mentioned a homebirth to my doctor and lets just say how dissapointed i am in her reaction. She TOLD me i had no chance, that with my health history that id have to be pretty selfish to want one,she said what if you and the baby die :ecomcity::ecomcity: argh i was so angry.I felt like rolling up in a ball and crying :(

This was coming from a doctor that tried to convince me to stop bf whilst ttc because it was taking so long and that my body wanted me to stop feeding, needless to say here i am pregnant and IM STILL BREASTFEEDING :smiliedance:

I rang CMWA and they told me i have a good chance and to just put in my application,so thats what im gonna do.

25-02-2008, 16:39
Well done to Shady!!! And to Daisy - nice and quick. What cutie! Well done to you both.

Jac - I am so sorry about the doctor saying you are selfish. I am getting the same reaction. I deserve a homebirth and I am going to fight for it. (Who is often crying about unfair it is)

MrsO
25-02-2008, 17:08
Oh Jac, unfortunately that is one misguided and uneducated opinion, and something which you are going to come across ALL the time :crying: She sounds like an idiot. But you probably will need a supportive GP for your homebirth (if you want scans/bloods etc) so see if you can find a more supportive one.

The CMWA sound really supportive which is awesome!!!

She is just scrumptious!

Jac um not to be rude but you need to find a new DR and realise you don't actually need anyone's "permission" and you have to fight it's hard I know I have been there of course I know you have a heart condition so you are going to need to be more careful I would assume.

I have just hired it (from JB) and it doesn't come with anything except the pool. We just used the garden hose to fill it up (it's not brand new, but not too old and we gave it a good rinse out with hot water beforehand). We didn't even need the attachment to connect it to the indoor tap - DH just jammed the hose over the laundry tap, lol. Worked just fine! It only took about 10 minutes to fill!

You can just get drinking grade hose from Bunnings if you are worried about chemicals from a regular garden hose.

We are going to syphon the water out, so no need for a pump, it's just pretty slow. Don't know how slow though, we haven't emptied it yet. I plan on getting in for a dip later! DD and I were splashing around in it earlier for her bath, lol. It is awesome, so comfortable and easy to get into different positions.

V8

Ikis - How exciting to have it set up and have a bit of a test run. :) I think i'll check out bunnings too for drinking grade hose and attachments, as if i bought it from Symply birth it would have cost $20.00 for the attachment and $24 for the hose, i think i might get it cheaper at Bunnings, but we shall see. Need to buy some waterproof drop sheets too. I'm glad to hear it's roomy and comfy, as i have hypermobility so my joints are in constant agony and water would just be awesome for my pain. :D

25-02-2008, 20:18

Hmmm... I have had 3 hours of regular 6 minute painful contractions and my second show for the day, so not sure, but it might be happening...

Better go and put a few more foot pumps full of air in the pool (ikis, your dp is a dear - I had to pump mine up myself :D).

How are you going Duchessa? Hope things are progressing well for you.

Charlie and I are still trying to establish our breastfeeding routine so am losing quite a bit of sleep. My milk is now in so things are getting better, just need some sleep now so may be a while between visits for us as well til we work this out.

Hope everyone else is well and will continue to pop in and out to keep updated on the bubbas to arrive. It's so lovely to see so many others preparing for their homebirths. I had a lady at Claire-Rose's child care today come up to me and say 'how brave I was for having a homebirth', she's expecting in sept 08. It's such a shame so many are misinformed or unaware of homebirth and how it can be a wonderful experience.

Still in one lovely round piece :) Still contracting - regular at 6 mins still but not quite as painful as last night. I had broken sleep but not too bad and now my mother has the kids so I can rest a bit, so everything is working out perfectly. I have just spoken to the midwife and she will come early this evening if I contract throughout the day. Mum had a dream that she delivered the baby last night :D and our sunflowers at the front of the house look exactly like they did in a very vivid dream of the birth that I had a few weeks ago - so all the omens, all the physical signs are lining up. Exactly what I am doing - I am so sorry I have been away - Congrats Shady and Veronica - fan-flippin-tastic

Yet to read up - but it is so kaos with scott working away and three little ducklings, I am finding my feet but phew - takes a bit of a shuffle up for sure!

Amelia is now over 10lb so obviously our feeding is going really really well - time consuming (on every 2hrs from start of feed, was feeding for an hour but it is getting quicker now

Obviously doesn't leave me much time otherwise

speaking of which - just waking for her next one and I insist on sitting quietly with her for it so sorry - gotta run

I am good :) Am getting over a cold, so not expecting anything to happen labour wise while I am still sick. Pumping myself full of herbs and stuff atm. Bub is fully engaged... which I didn't think happened until just before with subsequent pregnancies. Never mind, at least I can breath easier now, even though I need to pee all the time!

Katy, my midwife didn't offer her pool, but she only has a kiddie pool anyway, and I wanted a LaBassine.

The 'show' is the plug, but you can loose it for a few weeks, and it can regenerate itself too. When you start loosing bigger bits of bloody mucous it's a sign that your cervix is getting ready :)

V8
27-02-2008, 11:30

I'm the same as Ikis and V8, I bought my own pool because I wanted the convenience of having it, and I wanted the La Bassine. We reason that we'll most likely have all our kiddies at home so we will get the use out of it.

I'm sick too :crying: Trying so very hard to stay in a positive mindset and now I have a cold. I wont go into labour while I'm sick, will I? Hope not.
