Just thought I'd start up another new thread!! :D

I have always said that when I have kids I'm going to go & do a first-aid course.I have been looking into it & here's what I've found out:

I visited the site: www.stjohnqld.com.au (in case anyone would like to have a look what they offer)

Also, here is the full schedule for Brisbane & the Sunshine Coast for 2006: http://www.stjohnqld.com.au/pdf/bris06-1.pdf

Just as a summary, they offer a course designed for parents/grandparents/carers of young children up to the age of 12 years. It runs for 8 hours & costs $95. On successful completion of the course, participants receive a Statement of Attainment, which is valid for 3 years. As per ARC guidelines, St. John recommends that the resuscitation component of the course be recertified annually.

Content
• Assess the scene of an incident
• Conduct primary assess. of the casualty
• Safety
• Provide basic life support to a child
• Management of choking
• Management of wounds
• Management of internal and
external bleeding
• Management of head and facial injuries
• Management of infection control
• Management of poisons, bites and stings
• Management of burns
• Management of fractures
• Management of medical emergencies
for children

Locations on the Sunshine Coast are:- Caloundra State Middle School, Bower Street Caloundra & Sunshine Beach State High School, Ben Lexcen Drive, Sunshine Beach.

Dates are:-
March
Thurs 23 & 30: 10am - 2pm

April
Sun 2: 8.30am - 4.30pm
Thurs 20 & 27: 10am - 2pm

May
Sun 7: 8.30am - 4.30 pm
Thurs 18 & 25: 10am - 2pm

June
Sun 4: 8.30am - 4.30pm
Thurs 22 & 29: 10am - 2pm

As this course is 8 hours duration, I'm assuming you'd need to attend 2 days?

There is also a resuscitation course which is $50 & 3 hours duration - certificate valid for 1 year. The courses for this are held in the same locations, but at different times.

Would anyone else be interested in doing a course? I don't know if I'll have the $$$ to do one immediately, but I thought I'd ask around & see if anyone else would be interested & maybe we could arrange it a bit further down the track?

Yes, I think I could do it, as long as it's not too visual on the injuries bit. I have a very weak stomach and am likely to vomit :barf: should I see something gross.

Hiya Storm!! Looooooove your avatar pic!! Jazz is such a little cutie-pie!!!

I did a first-aid course many, many (many, many!) years ago when I was in high school & it's really not at all gory. They pretty much just showed us how to wrap limbs in bandages & that kind of thing. I think we may have watched one video featuring really bad "workplace safety video" type actors in it.

I know how you feel though! I would love to be a nurse except there is no way I could face all the grizzly & yucky stuff (there is no way I am cleaning up the poo of any person that did not at one time live inside my body!!)

Being a First Aid trainer I, of course, urge everyone to do a first aid course. I run the course you have put up, here in WA. It is a good course for children care.
You will not have to do an additional resuscitation course unless you want more procatice. The resus. course in addition is mainly aimed at adult life support.
In the course you put up you have basic life support for children. This is the resuscitation component and is child / infant specific.

Have a great time :smiliedance: .. if you only have to use it once, it's worth it... although I hope no-one ever has to use it.

Thanks Tash! I did wonder about that.

Can you also tell me, if you do the genral course for aimed at child carers, is the stand-alone resuscitation course suitable to do as a refresher to renew your cert each year, or do they have another course for that?

Also, am I right in saying that you would need to attend 2 separate sessions to complete the course?

I guess I really should just call them & find out, huh?!

It is here in WA, I would think it would be the same Aust wide, but sometimes they have some strange anomalies from state to state.

yes, four hours a day to make up the eight hour course.

sure, or you can ask me :) I'm just glad to finally be of some use around here ;)
