I rang our newspaper's classifieds to announce our engagement, and absolutely mortified at that they are charging between $30-$60 for a basic add (no cute little pics - just the words) surely it doesn't cost that much to place an announcement?? :banghead: :hissy:

I wonder if you can negotiate the final price? I mean it does seem a little over the top for a simple little announcement not like we are taking out a full-page spread!!

Has anyone else encountered the same rip off??

Hi MotherofPearl (must let you know that I love your handle :p)

I bet the birth notices and wedding notices are expensive also ... they certainly know how and where to rip us off don't they

Making an announcement of these kind (engagements, weddings, births, deaths&funeral) are something that we all want to do because we are proud and what to tell the world (with the exception of death/funeral although some like to celebrate the life), I reckon it might be cheaper to hire a blimp for a day lol

I think our parents paid $70 or $80 for our engagement notice in our local newspaper  because of this we never put our wedding or birth notice in

That's pretty standard pricing. Even a classified ad can be exxy.

Um...could you change the colour of your text. It makes my eyes bleed!

Seems about normal really i pay anywhere from $7 a line to $30 a line depending where and what paper its in for advertise.

I do think they need to reduce the death notice fee though they are a little out there JMO

I paid $150 for Aubrey's birth notice and it didn't have a pic, just script at the top and for her name.

MIL was hassling us to put a death notice in for DH's dad, even though she put our names in her notice & we offered to split the cost between the family. We haven't done it because we have been left with the cost of the wake which could be anywhere up to $1000.

We are lucky where I live you can have birth announcements for free... and that includes a pretty big piture prob about 15cm x 15cm../

The weird thin is you still see peopl pay for the ones in the classified section when these ones are awesome and free...
They occassionallyhave them for weddings too..

Yeah, no public notices for us, either. I've always thought of them as more of a socialite thing anyway. Mum always did say I'm a reverse snob.

Having worked in the newspaper industry for a while, that does some pretty average infact probably quite good price...the BDM's (birth deaths marriages) are always quite pricey as it something people will pay for and demand I guess...usually the higher the circulation and readership figures the more expensive...anyhow I am surprised you dont get option of photo...that sucks! I think for my birth announcement in our regional newspaper back home (no photo, but choice of baby style picture) it was 18.00 pounds so about 50 dollars, our wedding one was about 90 dollars with photo. If I had wanted to do the whole socialite thing and gone with a UK national paper well god only knows probably about 500 dollars! Suppose depends who you want to know...my gran did for my sisters engagement 10 years ago and I think was about 200 pounds for couple of lines.

I'm  socialite by any means and my motive for wanting to announce our engagement was for our wedding album and for our kids when looking back through our history together

All advertising is expensive. To put a small ( probably 3/4 the size of a business card ) business ad in the West Australian is arpund $550 - $600 for one day. Very few people i know put engagement or wedding announcements in the paper.
