View Full Version : Moving to Townsville?
Hi,
I currently live in Brisbane with DH, DD and soon to be #2. We fell in love with Townsville after a recent holiday, and are now considering moving in the next 12-18 months.
My questions are:
What are some 'nice' areas to live in (by nice I mean somewhere where you can bring up a family)
Has anyone else done this move and what advice can you give?
Thanks.
Hi I grew up in Townsville and left a year ago. (still miss it very much - it's a great place to raise kids)
Great areas to live in is Riverside Gardens - (nice new housing estate on the river) also the newer parts of Kirwan - they're lovely. Alot of young couples try to source places around North Ward though I'd suggest it's not as family orientated. If you want to know more specific things let me know - it really is a beautiful place - hope to be back there in a couple of years myself.
We did the bris to townsville move mid last year. I would suggest if you do the move do it in winter so you (and the kids) have time to adjust to the summer heat.
We currently live in aitkenvale. I love it here, we don't really have any problems (other than people that drive like lunatics down the street sometimes, but that happens anywhere). We have a heap of parks within walking distance and its pretty central to everything. There is also a library just down the road from us and a really great child care centre next to the library.
Im not really sure about what areas are good I haven't lived many places but I can say that if you can to avoid these areas:
Kelso, Rasmussen, Condon (A lot of parts in these areas at least used to be rather dodgey)
Deeragun (its very boring for kids and a fair drive to just about everything.)
I personally wouldn't live at West End (used to have bad problems with Parkies not sure about it now), South Townsville (same as west end, and a lot of the houses seem rather old), North Ward (the strand is lovely but i wouldn't live there because there are an awful lot of hoons, also used to be parkie central)
It all depends on what you can and cant afford.
I would suggest before you move you have another holiday and check out some areas to see what you think. And before you do that research what areas you can and cant afford. Then maybe ask people on here what some of the pros and cons are of those places.
Hi there :)
We live in Riverside Gardens (Douglas) and it is wonderful. Very very family friendly...lots of walking tracks down near the river and kiddies parks.
I would also suggest Annandale, and some areas of Kirwan and Willows.
Places I would avoid are: West End (we sold our house there because it was just awful....not family friendly at all!!!), South Townsville, North Ward (too noisy and hoons), some areas of Kirwan (near the main road....lots of housing commission).
Good luck. Townsville really is a wonderful place to raise a family. I love it here. :)
Hi!
I am born and bred in Townsville. I have moved around Townsville quite a lot and have lived in many of its suburbs.
As the girls have mentioned, there are definate areas to try and keep clear of. They are not all bad but not overly great aswell.
Where you want to live all depends on how much you are willing to pay. Rent is quite high everywhere. But the more "decent" suburbs are pretty high in rent and price. There are LOTS of new houses going up all around the places.
If you prefer to live closer to the beach but outside of the city, there are many new housing estates going up north of the city. There are heaps of beaches north. The main beach in Townsville is the Strand which you probably went down to. Areas around here a fairly expensive. Most of the houses are there are older places aswell. You get the odd place that is new or renovated.
You really do have a lot to chose from. You can live beachside, central, city, riverside and rural. Again, it all depends on how much your willing to pay.
If you go onto the realestate.com website and do a search on places within your price range, find the places you like, then come back and let us know which areas they are in we could let you know the reputation of the suburb.
Or as someone else suggested, come back for a trip solely to search for a nice area to move to. I guess the net would be the cheaper option though.
Let us know if you need anymore info!
Hope that help!
Take Care!

Hi, we moved to Townsville in December and are awaiting the arrival of our first child (4wks to go). We're in Aitkenvale and love the location, handy to everything we need and we don't need to go into the city at all unless it's for a drive. Riverways has a great pool too as we rent ($300/wk is avg in Aitkenvale) and don't have a pool. It was a nightmare finding a rental property though - very anxious times.

I live in riverside gardens, its not that great.
kirwan is good. though not to many kiddy parks that are safe.
the older suburbs have great parks most are now being gated to stop kids running away and onto roads. try aitkenvale. currajong and parts of mundingburra. there great for kids and mostly younger families are moving there now.
Mt louisa has mostly drug users there. more so the new suburbs. a friend of mine that is a cop said if you ever get a house come up in mt louisa dont move there.

I agree too Sonjeee! I also live in Riverside Gardens, we moved here from Brissy in Nov last year and we love it. Wouldn't want to go back!
Where we are here is close to the river, lots of bike and walking paths and a park on nearly every corner it seems. There's a play group at the local community centre every week and the people are friendly. It's close to shopping centres and everything else and only 15 mins if that to The Strand. We're so glad we ended up here.
Best of luck!
