My son has just turned one and is due for his vaccinations, he has had them all up until now but after seeing an episode of 'Oprah' I'm unsure about the giving him the MMR.

I'm trying to search the net for information for and against, so far I've only found information for, and now he's awake.... so there goes my research!

Can anyone tell me why they chose to get it, or not to get it? I really am in two minds about it, and hold absolutely nothing against anyone for the decision they have made. I think as parents we decide what we think is best for our children.

If I hadn't seen that 'Oprah', it probably would have been done by now. I'm making a dr's appointment so she can tell me why they say you should have it, but feel I need to hear more about not having it. Does anyone know where I can find this info? I'm not interested in being put down for chosing to have the vaccinations up until now, so please respect my decision so far...

Thanks:yes:

This site has great info about vaxing in general, as well as about each specific vax. You should find what you are looking for here.

Hope it helps you make a decision that you are comfortable with :)

I have to be quick, I got ds out of his cot and now he's 'reading' all of the books he's pulled off the shelf, while I occasionally call out "What are you doing bubba?" and he says "ca, or-a.. quack"!!

There was a lady on who thought her son developed autism after the vaccine, which he had at 2 years old. She didn't think it happened to all children, just some which may be pre-disposed, and she thought the vaccine shouldn't be 'one size fits all'. She noticed big differences in her son right after he had the needle, and they also brought a second woman on saying basically the same. It was a while ago... I don't think Nathaniel was even born when I saw it!! They weren't saying it was awful or bad or don't do it, just there needs to be more research.

I'll be back after bed time!!

Was this the episode on Oprah where it had the lady talking about her son and autism?

There has been a lot of debate regarding the MMR and autism link.

I believe the MMR vaccine could be a trigger for autism but don't believe it actually CAUSES autism. There are many factors to look at when it comes to autism and it can also be genetic and also I believe that a child may already have autistic depositions before they are diagnosed properly - and sometimes it just needs a trigger factor to bring it out... this can also be food related.

There has been a suspected link between MMR and autism, however I believe that current research is now saying that those who have had MMR and they believe it caused the autism in them already had the defective gene to start with. So only those with the defective gene who get MMR are at risk of developing autism from the vaccine. BUT you can't blame MMR entirely for autism in that case. My nephew had autism and it began at the time he had MMR, his mother delayed vaccinating him, and started him with the schedule at 12 months so he was older when he had the MMR vaccines. I have been semi-following it, and she is studying it and has just written a paper saying what her research has found, and that is about the defective gene being present to begin with.

Yep i totally agree !

Also there was new evidence released last year from memory saying that it was fairly obvious from 6mths now doctors were saying if a child would develop Autism ... Something to do with their reactions to names etc .... Cant remember sorry :o

Boof is fully vaccinated & will continue to be so. Squeak on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. He has reflux as well as other issues with allergies so while i did the right thing of starting his vax's ive not got the rest done & wont be at this point. I will be re-evaluating at 12mths of age but there is no way at all that he will have the MMR until at least 5yrs & thats then if i feel its necessary.

I am actually pro-vax believe it or not lol BUT i do believe everyone needs to make the decision based on their own feelings/instincts & research. Even my mum agrees with me & she is very very pro-vax because she is a Polio surviver. I am also someone who reacts to certain vax's so mine were either given in half doses or others held off until i was old enough to handle them better. Not every child should be vaccinated & even good doctors will acknowledge that. The other thing i also feel funny about nowadays is the way all vax's are lumped together i really think this is a bad move but thats me.

I really believe each child is different so certain things need to be assessed in regards to their compacity to handle the vax. While many children will never be affected sadly there are those that will be just like the disease itself. So its a really hard decision to make either way.

I lost all my vax info recently when our computer died :geek: There is plenty of info out there as well on here if you search through the vax threads. Will try to get back on later to have a trawl through myself otherwise im sure others will be around with their stuff !

Good luck.

We have decided to delay MMR until a time when we feel that DD's immune system is ready for that kind of assault. She was frighteningly sick after the other 12mth vax and I believe it was because her immune system was so busy trying to battle the diseases injected into her, that a garden-variety, run of the mill virus ended up hospitalising her and we found ourselves in the ED holding her down for blood tests for leukemia. Not a lot of fun.

Combination vax are very convenient, but that doesn't necessarily translate to being good for a tiny little person. The autism link has been widely publicised and some jury's are still out, but I don't think it is the only consideration when vaxing a baby. MMR is based in egg albumen and has been shown to cause 'reactions' in a small number of children, even those without egg allergies.

It is a hard decision to make, but we're just taking it slow and steady. Good luck for whatever you decide.

Thanks for all the help. I agree that the MMR doesn't cause the autism, and that it is existing there to start with. I also agree that it can be genetic, which is a concern for me... I often wonder if my husband has some form of autism that went undiagnosed when he was a child (long story)... That is really adding to my arguments against..

I wish there was a test to determine if your child has the autism gene or not - and if the MMR triggers it - is it then possible that not getting the vaccination will mean it doesn't surface? Or is it going to happen eventually anyway?

Does anyone know if not having all the vaccinations makes it difficult to enrol in childcare or school? I worked in childcare for 10 years, I just don't know that side of it!

Geez it's tricky being a mum.... I just think I'd be so upset if I went ahead and did it and then my little boy changed. Are measles mumps and rubella really dangerous?

At this point I'm thinking I'll take him to the dr for the other 12 month needles, and keep researching the MMR. Has anyone else done this?..
