Hi,

I thougt I would try Baby Love nappies as DS#2 is going through them at a great rate. I bought them on Saturday when shopping and a friend of mine told me that her SIL stopped using them as they gave her youngest very bad nappy rash. I said I would keep an eye on him. Well, I picked him up from Daycare this afternoon and he has the worst case of nappy rash I have ever seen. It's even up around his little willy. He screamed in pain when he went for a shower with Daddy and that's not like him. I have taken him straight out of them and back to Huggies nappies (blow the cost) Poor little darling, he is slathered with nappy rash cream, so I hope that does the trick.

What I would like to know is, has anyone else had this problem? If so, could you please let me know as I am thinking of approaching the manufacturers to let them know that they need to look at their nappies.

Thanks in advance. :)

Many, many children have allergic and chemical reactions to the stuff in disposables.
here is an article I found, take from it what you like. I am not in any way trying to push cloth on you, but many people are not aware of the rubbish in babies nappies.

How Dangerous Are Disposables?

Your child will spend the first 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years of his or her life in diapers. Disposable diapers are an easy way of diapering, but are the possible health hazards these diapers pose worth the simplicity?

MALE INFERTILITY Disposable diapers could be the cause of the sharp rise in male infertility over the past 25 years. It is thought that disposable diapers heat up boys testicles to such a degree that it stop them from developing normal.

SODIUM POLYACRYLATE, which is linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome and can therefore no longer be used in tampons, is the super absorbent gel in disposable diapers. You can find the little "gel balls" on the skin of your baby's bottom. It is interesting to note that employees in factories manufacturing sodium polyacrylate suffer from female organ problems, slow healing wounds, fatigue and weight loss.

TBT (TRIBULYTIN) In May 2000 Greenpeace found TBT in PampersŪ Baby Dry in Germany. TBT is one of the most toxic substances ever made. It harms the immune system and impairs the hormonal system. There is speculation that it could cause boys to become sterile.

DIOXIN Traces of the carcinogen Dioxin have been found in disposable diapers. Dioxin causes liver disease, immune system suppression and genetic damage. It is a byproduct of bleaching with chlorine gas and is banned in most countries. Unfortunately, the USA still allows it.

ASTHMA In 1998 a study showed that childhood respiratory problems, including asthma, might be linked to inhaling the mixture of chemicals emitted from disposable diapers.

UTI INFECTIONS IN BABY GIRLS also seem on the rise with an increased use of disposable diapers.

BABIES POORLY DEVELOPED OUTER SKIN LAYER ABSORBS ABOUT 48 CHEMICALS if you use disposable diapers & wipes and standard baby products. This can be greatly reduced by using cloth diapers and natural baby products.

You can find out more about the above topics on our cloth diaper articles page or at www.borntolove.com and www.mothering.com.

have you tried the woolies home brand nappies theyhave never given my dd a rash and are fairly cheap. if you live in brisbane pm me and i will give a phone number of a place that sells cheap factory second nappies every bit as good as huggies but half the cost.

the rash might also have been from the child care not changing his nappy soon enough and letting it stay on him for too long. my aunt had that problem with her ds. she had to change him immediately after he had done anything and he always had to be slathered with cream, even when she used cloth.

it could also have been something you ate. if breastfeeding and you eat something spicy it can take up to 3 days to affect your little one.

(I'm a cloth user - but) what bilile&beth said was my first thought!!! often rashes occur due to not enough changes..

do try them again ... but on the weekend... where you can keep an eye on him and make sure that he is changed often enough...

good luck and :hugs: to your bubs... hope the rash is gone soon!!

I've used BabyLove nappies on and off with both girls, and i've never had a problem....I'm now using the black & gold brand on DD2 for the day, and Woolies Select for night...with no problems.

I used Babylove with DS without a problem...DD however is a different story. She didn't really get a normal nappy rash, but her skin looked really dry and red all the time I was using them. I stopped using them and put her in cloth and within a day the redness was gone.
I was using Huggies, but they are sooo expensive, now I use Bebes. They seem really good so far, no rashes/redness, no leaks, no crystals :) If I start having problems with these ones then I'll probably try the woolies home brand ones, I used them for a while when DS was only needing a night nappy and they were fantastic :) no leaks with those either...on a 2.5yr old.

I have only ever bought one packet of Baby Love and probably only used 3 of them as they were so cheap and nasty to me. They felt like wax paper.

But to me you get what you pay for, so I only use huggies and have never had a problem yet. My dd has never had nappy rash from using huggies.

I brought baby love nappies and my DD has come out in an awful rash, also the

nappies have this elastic bit on the side, which has started coming off on quite a

few of the nappies i used. I'm not very happy with them at all and will never use

them again. I think i will try the woolies ones, everyone seems to like them.

Like veve & Billie&Beth my first instinct is that the childcare centre isnt changing bubs often enough.
Ive never had dramas with Babylove but they arent strong enough to last overnite & this also may be why bubs got a rash. Huggies take in a lot more moisture & keep it well away from bubs whereas Babylove dont from what ive found.
Anyways i now use cloth & i have a bubs who has sensitive skin & this has been the best move ever.

We have been using BabyLove for a three weeks now and have not had any problems - they don't leak half as much as the Huggies did and I always had problems with crystals and bad nappy rash with the Huggies. My son too also had more redness today than usual but i am putting that down to the fact that it was so awfully humid - he actually today has the worst heat rash he has ever had as well. My son has incredibly sensitive skin.
I also agree very much with the other girls about the frequency of changing the nappy and also too think about things like the acidity of the urine because of teething, or changes in diet etc if you have introduced a new food? (Thats if he is on solis yet?)

But, just in my opinion we have had less problems with the quality and our son's skin since changing to BL from huggies.

I vote against Babylove nappies.. I used three nappies and got crystals all over the bottom, leakages and rash.

I exclusively use Huggies now and have never had any of those problems.. or any others. I have never bought huggies at full price, I always look out for good specials and buy up.. when I switched from Infant to Crawler, I still had a couple of packets of infant nappies left over (unopened) I just took them back to a store and they let me replace them with crawlers.. no reciept needed!

Thank you everyone for your comments. It's given me lots of food for thought. Especially the article on what actually goes into disposable nappies. That was an eye opener I can tell you.

Shane doesn't actually go to a daycare centre, I have him in family daycare with a local lady. She loves him just as much as we do (she's like his surrogate Grandmother) She changes him every hour on the hour, more if he is wet/dirty. He's only there from 9.30am - 2.30pm and they go through probably 5-7 nappies per day. I don't mind, I would rather that he was clean. I am the same, I have never paid for Huggies at full price. I thought I was doing the right thing by changing brands, but as everyone said, "You get what you pay for" Trust me, the first thing I am doing when I get to Woolworths is buy a packet of Huggies and the BL are going to a littlie that doesn't react to the nappies the same way Shane has.

Once again, Thanks everyone, you have been a great help to me. Now I know why I love this site so much.

Veve, when are we going to the markets? :)
