View Full Version : 9 month old only 2 milk feeds a day??
Hi, I have a quick question if people would not mind giving their opinions: My sister in law dropped her daughters middle of the day breast feed at xmas- 9 months of age. Since then she has her on vegetables, fruit and water in a cup through the day. Apparently she has just started giving her yoghurt also, (but no milk feed at all other than moring/night. Is this ok???? My youngest is 5 weeks younger than her daughter and she still has about 5 breastfeeds a day, sometimes more. She had breakfast/lunch and dinner though and rusks or cruskits in between.
I just seriously can't imajine cutting a 9 month old down to this amount of feeds. She doesn't go to a mothers group or anything but does get advice from the clinic. Am I wrong?????? As her daughter won't eat her vegies at night she is not giving her anything at all between lunch and dinner so that she is hungry. (Which still isn't working.) We do not get on very well so am reluctant to say anything. Opinions, please!!
I dont really know if its right or wrong but my girls were having 3 big feeds a day at that age and also grazing in between maybe for 5 minutes here and there during the day. I figure if the wanted it they got it, and they werent that keen on solids at that age so tended to prefer the breast.
Food is meant to be experimental so she should be offering milk before solids honestly though to make her wait from lunch to dinner sounds a little harsh, is that fluids as well or just solids?
I have always let me kids lead me my girls didnt have many solids at that age but they were more so having bm, ds however was having three solid meals a day plus 3-4 bottles of formula a day and also water if he was thirsty in between.
I guess there isnt a right or wrong but lunch to dinner sounds wrong to me :(
I have an 8 month old who has 3 breastfeeds a day - his choice - and he often refuses one or two of these feeds. I checked it out with a nurse, and she said to just make sure he is offered dairy at his solid feeds to make up for it. She didnt seem overly concerned. This is my 3rd breastfed bub, with the others it was me trying to cut back on feeds, not the other way around!!
My 8 month old is having between 6 and 8 feeds a day. He has some solid food once or twice a day too. I haven't heard of having such a small amount at that age, I don't know if it would be ok or not. If she is taking advice from a clinic nurse regularly, hopefully all will be ok.
Ok, I'll admit it, my (almost) 9 month old is prob having at least 6 feeds also. However, 2-3 of those would be little snacky feeds! She was also 1 month early and only weighed 4lb 13oz so I have never really cared how much she fed, figured more the better!! Only very recently began to wonder if I was doing the right thing letting her feed so much, perhaps she should be having more solid food instead?? My first daughter was breastfed and I demand fed her right up to 12 months. She was always big, healthy bub so didn't really care what anyone else thought, figured she was getting what she needed and thriving.
My sister in law is one of those people that does what she wants and won't listen to reason, so don't know if anybody advised her to do this. Feel sorry for my neice who is probably hungry. Other thing is she was a very chubby baby and my SIL had major body image problems, wouldn't suprise me in all honestly if she has out her on some kind of "diet," for fear of her getting too fat!
