Name: Tyler Burgess
Due Date: 4/01/2008
Birth Date: 8/01/2008
Time: 12.28am
Length: 52cm
Weight: 8lbs 2oz/ 3.76kg
Birth Type: Spontaneous Vaginal Birth

It was about 4pm on the 7th January when I started getting mild period pains in my lower back, about every 20 minutes or so. We’d been so eager for labour to start that I thought knowing our luck this would just be a false labour or pre labour so I wasn’t too excited. Earlier that day I’d tried all the usual ‘bring it on’ tricks.... eaten a whole pineapple, power walked up hills, had laughably awkward sex and was just about to give the castor oil a try when the pains started.

They got progressively worse over the next few hours although I was managing ok with Rich heating up my wheat pack and didn’t think I needed anything stronger just yet. About 10.30pm it was getting harder to talk through the contractions and I was thinking ‘hey, maybe this could be it’. I laid down on the bed and heard an audible pop when my waters broke with a gush. I couldn’t stop laughing and there was more gushing each time I giggled.

Rich ran to grab some towels and said it smelled nasty but I didn’t really notice because REAL contractions had suddenly kicked in, my knees nearly went out from under me. It was all still in my lower back; I’d expected to feel contractions in my tummy but felt nothing at the front the whole time. Then it was a mad rush to the hospital with me in tears and telling Rich to shut up each time a contraction came so I could concentrate :banghead:

By now they were around 5 minutes apart, although I was a bit out of it so when we got to the birth centre Rich had to correct me when I told the midwife they were 20mins apart. She got me on the examination bed pronto and did an internal only to find I was 8cm dilated and she said I’d probably have the baby in around 20 minutes

I was scared now and it all became a bit of a blur but I just remember labouring on all fours leaning over the back of the bed and doing the whole primal scream thing; I don’t think I could make those noises now if I tried...

The whole painful part of the labour only lasted two hours and it was all in my lower back; I hardly remember the stretching feeling when Tyler came out. Richard was rubbing my back so hard I felt bruised for days, although at the time he couldn’t do it hard enough for me! Pushing was seriously hard work; two weeks later my diaphragm is only just feeling better after being bruised from screaming and pushing. It really does feel like pooping concrete!

Ty arrived alert and healthy without any drugs at all – I tried the gas but I think I was way past it at that stage and found it didn’t help at all, in fact I thought it wasn’t even turned on. I was up and walking (albeit waddling) pretty much straight away and didn’t have any tearing or anything, just a few grazes which stung the first couple of times I went to the loo. It was so wonderful to feel suddenly light again and be able to reach my toes and even my massively puffy feet went down immediately! :yelclap:

Richard cut Ty’s cord and I was feeding him pretty much straight away; the midwife said he had great suction and was swallowing in big gulps, although it took me a little while and a few tears to get him attached properly and I’m still having a little bit of pain now due to cracked nipples.

All in all it was a wonderful birth experience; I’m so proud of myself for not having and drugs at all – not that there was any time for that!

He's such a good bubba, very content and is sleeping and feeding really well. He's strong too; already holding his head up for nearly 10 seconds!

A big congrats to you! And Tyler is such a cutie too.

(And it's a great feeling to be able to give birth with no drugs, huh? Like you, I tried the gas but after two puffs was :barf: so ended up having nothing).

Thanks for sharing...
