ONE in four Australian drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel and a third refuse to take breaks during long journeys, according to a survey.

A survey carried out by insurer AAMI has found that 26 per cent of respondents had fallen asleep at least momentarily while driving.

The majority of respondents also said they would drive for more than three hours without taking a break.

AAMI's public affairs manager, Geoff Hughes, said motorists needed to be aware of how dangerous fatigue can be – particularly over the long weekend.

“AAMI’s research shows almost one third of drivers will not stop for a break while driving, despite being fatigued,” Mr Hughes said.

“Driving long distances without sufficient breaks is a risky practice for drivers to engage in, yet half of all Australian drivers say they will drive for three hours or more without a break.”

Around 13 per cent of respondents who had been in a car accident said fatigue was a “contributing factor”.

But 62 per cent of respondents also said they had used a driver reviver site in the past.

The survey of 2380 drivers was carried out last year.
