Does anybody have any info re how long it takes for certain foods to make their way into breastmilk, and again how long they take to metabolise.

I'm looking for general info (eg. vegies in general, chocolate, other refined sugars, dairy...) I want to know so I can monitor DS' behaviour, wind, nasal congestion and ability to settle - and then compare it with my diet.

That is a really hard question to answer as it depends on how your body metabolizes the particular food. It also depends on the % of fat in your body and the function of your liver.

The nutrients are not passed directly to your baby they are digested, processed and excreted into your breastmillk they are no longer, what they were when you ate them. Sugary things may not be the only thing that would cause a sugar overload as somethings are processed by you body into sugar like starch from potatoes or breads.

I posted some stuff on Cows milk protien which did have a little bit about metabolism in it but it would be very broad as you just couldn't tell exactly.

If you cant find it I can pm you the link.

Hi Goosie,

Thanks! I saw the stuff on cows milk, which is what sort of inspired me to ask this question :)

Guess trial and error is the best thing. Needless to say, a lot of the things I'm curious about are pretty bad for me too so I shouldn't really be looking for ways to justify eating them ;) ie. chocolate...

Thanks again.

Lis

Hi again,
Just a suggestion on the chocolate front, its really the dairy milk chocolate that causes the problems. You could try Lindt 80% it isnt very sweet and tastes nothing like cadbury but it is chocolate and you do aquire the taste if you are a true devote to chocolate. The good thing about it is you dont have to eat the vast quanities to achieve the chocolate high.
