View Full Version : Lactose Free and New Step 2, Sleep issues
I am confused as to what is going on here.
DD has been on Lactose Free Formula and happy on it, but Paed advised me to try her on a Regular Step 2 6 month plus formula and introduce it slowly. So I have used the Nan Gold Step 2 and it seems to be making it difficult for her to pass stools, she's been irritable a lot more and waking more with wind at night. This all on top of teething, argh.
Anyway, I have only made it to as far as half and half bottles over the last week and half and each day she's seeming more irritable, could this be coincidence or is she not ready for this formula?
It's all so confusing. I don't see the Paed for another month or so yet. Not sure what to do here.
ANyway, does anyone elses bubbies drink Lactose Free Formula (I use S26) and sleep really well at night like 6-8 hours at a time? DD only goes 3-4 hours at at time even though she is on solids 1-2 times a day.
Thanks.

Firstly why is your baby on Lactose Free formula? Is she lactose intolerant? If she has true lactose intolerance I don't see how introducing a lactose formula would help her at all
Anyway...my dd is 9mo and on S26 LF and she sleeps very well at night, last night 12 straight hours from 7-7. She has maybe 2 bottles a day of 180mL and 3 solid feeds.
Oh and She is on the formula as she has primary lactose intolerance. She has a completely lactose free diet.

Just re-read your post and realised I didn't respond properly.
In regards to the increasing irritability I would say the new formula isn't agreeing with her but I have heard many ppl say that those GOLD formulas are too rich for their babes due and tend to cause constipation. Maybe try a normal one not the gold?
Sorry I am not much help.
Hope you work it out.:hugs:
Understanding your concerns...Unless she is throwing up, rash, or explosive diarrhea i would try an give it a couple of days...
Commonly when you change from LF to 'normal' there is a bit of constipation and irritability
You can help with the stools by giving bub some pear juice or pears...
Keep it at half and half for another day and then try 3parts 'normal' to 1part LF....
See how she goes....
If still no improvement after another couple of days then talk to the paed and see what he suggests... Excess wind can be a sign that lactose may still be an issue BUT it can also be due to the digestive aids in the gold...
I would also suggest that maybe a HA formula may have been better to introduce (should of suggested this the other day)...
there is absolutely nothing wrong with gold but possibly introducing it to a 'sensitive' tum may be causing the issue... and step 2 has a difference in the Whey/Casein ratio's which i'm sure probably isn't helping...
All the best hun x x:)
ETA: I just wanted to add that I'm definitely NOT going against the paeds advice when i suggest the HA... Was just a thought... x
Thank you HappyMumma, she was never tested for her Lactose Intolerance....Paed just told me she has an intolerance to it from symptoms she was getting that's all. He said it should pass and she would grow out of it...so that's why he told me to try her on a normal formula for 6 months plus.
I went that Nan Gold thinking it was best for baby, as friends of mine have used it no trouble.
After reading up about it all though....I agree with you and Essjay it must be way too rich for her little tum.
Thanks for your advice again Essjay, I agree....might go get the HA Nan No. 2 (which I didn't know I could get until today) and since it's the same formula but HA'd and no Gold in it, we might have lift off, or at least a happier bubby within a week or so.
Thanks gals.

My DD1 was on S26 LF until she was 12 months old then i gradually introduced cows milk which she tolerated fine. Dr did say Nan HA was better than the gold because it is easier to digest and suggested i put her on that if i didn't want to go with the LF option. I just went LF and stayed that way and is solved all the problems she was having.
It was a fairly smooth transition to cows milk at 12 months as obviously her body was ready for it.
Oh well, after 2 weeks my little Miss isn't ready for normal cows milk formula yet.
The same old issues have come back, every day is worse than the last....you know the runny poos, the tummy cramps (screaming and clawing at me while clenching her legs), the waking every 1/2 hour to an hour at night, the flushed red face, the vomiting and general fussiness and gassiness.
My poor little pumpkin, will definately wait a lot longer before bothering with the normal formula that's for sure.
Does anyone know if Karicare De Lact is any better than S26 LF? She does seem to have a bit of trouble passing bowel movements that's all....I know it could be the solids, but I always feed her pears and that helps...otherwise the days I don't give her solids (to test out my theory and make her drink more milk) she does still back up that's all. Would it be o'kay to try her on Karicare De Lact instead without too much fuss you think?
Karicare de-lact is IMO a much better choice...
I'm sorry to hear that bub's isn't ready....
At least you know hun... Hope your not feeling too bad about trying her...
x ♥ x
Thanks Essjay....
Do you think it would be o'kay to try her on Karicare De Lact straight away...well sort of, just introduce it slowly over a couple of days and see how she goes?
I do feel bad actually, broke my heart seeing her in pain and then realizing it's my fault....oh well. I will help her get over it with lots of love and cuddles.
Thanks.
It wont effect her in anyway by swapping straight over... De-lact is very gentle in the tummy and if the Lactose is the issue (which most obviously is... poor bubba) then this should definitely resolve the issue...
Good luck hun.... x x
 Pleasure..... Hope all is well x x
