View Full Version : Home Brand - What Do You Recommend??
Hi Guys :)
I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about various home brand/cheap products that you've tried and would recommend. Sometimes I find that I waste money trying out cheaper products that are then no good!
I really like the home brand tortilla wraps and home brand tomato paste - both of these are, to me, indistinguishable from the more expensive brands.

I shop at Franklins and would definitely recommend the No Frills crumbed fish fillets and the No Frills frozen vegies.

We discovered by way of trying to save money, Aldi stores have fantastic nappy soaker ( way better than napisan! ) and nappies and pull-ups ( same if not better quality than Huggies! ) They are cheap as chips too, which makes it even better, just remember to take your own bags, if you're like me you'll forget time after time!!!!:yelclap:
Home brand tinned fruit salad and 2 fruits seem to be the same as other brands.
I bought home brand rice bubbles yesterday and they seem the same.
We use home brand nappies during the day (& huggies at night) and they're great. (I think they're better than snugglers, babylove, woolies brand etc)
Home brand tinned whole peeled tomatoes - no difference
Home brand bacon - no difference
Home brand frozen mini sausage rolls - taste great to me
Home brand tasty cheese - half the price, not much difference
Home brand milk ices icy poles are popular here too (they're like the old 'splits')
Geez, I sound like a home brand freak..... or a real cheapskate!
i buy home brand rice... but they only have white.
and home brand cheese dips for the kid
I love the Aldi home brand stuff!
We also buy home brand rice and frozen veg. Woolworths Select cheese is nice. We use Wool. Select nappies as well, I love them.
Home brand Water crackers are exactly the same, I mean, how far wrong can you go with a water cracker!!
I buy Eloise plain label tiny teddies, they're the same and half the price.
I use a lot of Black & Gold brand stuff - you can't tell the difference. My hubby is a label-nut but I snuck B&G things into his meals and he never knew the difference. HEAPS cheaper, so why not...
Have to say I am especially impressed by their pasta and rice :) Soooo much cheaper and tastes just the same :)

the home brand baby wipes in the soft pack are great. thick and smell great. (not as thick as huggies but thick enough to handle messy jobs). and at $3 cheaper than most other brands.
i do get my nappies from a factory seconds place at slacks creek (on kingston road near park road at agronaught shopping centre) i can get 100 medium nappies for $20. and maybe 1 or 2 in the pack don't stick very well. other than that they are great. can't tell the difference between them and the huggies brand. just as absorbant. if you get 2 boxes or more they will deliver for free. (you can also get washing powder, dishwashing liquid and toilet paper there in bulk and very cheap).

HEE HEE HEE HEE  I do this all the time!!!!
Mine gets so cranky when I don't buy the brand he likes (ie Nescafe) so I just keep the old jar, and pour the home=brand coffee into the nescafe jar.... He didn't know the difference......
I personally like the home-brand pasta sauce, comes in a bigger jar (750ml i think?) and it's so much cheaper than the raguletto or whatever.
Home-brand disposable nappies, I found they were just as good as any name brand.
Things like ALFOIL and DISINFECTANT. I can't see any reason why to buy the name brands of those.
Home brand taco stuff, the taco shells, the taco powder mix stuff, the taco sauce, it's all just as good.
I buy the home-brand milk too.

weet-bix
tasty cheese ( )
nursing pads
full cream powdered milk

I wouldnt recommend the HB pasta though... it seems very starchy to me...
I'm gonna check out the aldi nappies this week i think!!
Frozen veg, marjgarine, Aluminium foil, glad wrap, sandwich bags & scourers/chux.
Home Brand Meat pies!! On 'a current affair' they won the more 'meat for your pie' and they actually taste better and have more filling than the dearer ones.. My DP actually WANTS them all the time instead of the dearer ones!!
ALDI frozen party sausage rolls (24 pack for $2.99) are great...I love them!! They taste NO different, and the pastery on them is really yummy!!
Actually now you mention it ALDI Shampoo and conditioner (in same bottle as Fructis, same shape, green and orange) IS exactly the same as fructis and is HEAPS cheaper!! That's one product i really LOVE!!
homebrand cream is good too, we can't tell the difference

I used Johnson and Johnsonproducts with my first child, but when the second came along, I tried the home brand baby bath wash and it smells great and foams up well!!

I use this too,and I think it's fantastic! We do most of our shoppping at Aldi, including the nappies, and I have to say that most of their home brand stuff is exactly the same as branded products,if not better, and cheaper.

We love home brand nappies (mainly Select, blue & white, and Coles' other brand), wipes, grated cheese, cheese slices, toothpaste, cotton buds, make-up remover pads and milk....
Probably more than that to add to the list but I can't think at the moment!!
I can't deal with home brand toilet paper though!
Geez, I sound like a home brand freak..... or a real cheapskate!
lol im the same, i think just about everything in my pantry is homebrand. I always give homebrand a go. If i dont like it then i go back to the name brands. Ok here is the list of what ive got that is homebrand in my pantry: Al foil, cling wrap, freezer bags of various sizes, tacos, taco seasoning mix, jam, honey, chips, salt, pepper, pasta, rice, sugar, flour, condensed milk, jelly, cordial, baked beans, spaghetti, biscuits, cooking spray, oil, soy sauce (although i find it a little watery). Now for the fridge freezer: ice-cream, canola margarine (low fat), butter, unsalted butter, eggs, milk ummmmmmmmmm i think thats it oh i also use homebrand breastpads
I hve to admit, I like colours which is why I don't buy as much homebrand stuff (and possibly why I don't like to shop at woolies)
I DO buy Bilo brand tho', I love their Margerine, Crumpets, Jams, milk and pasta packs :D
Probably a lot more but I can't think of anything.
I also like the "You'll Love Coles" brand... but I think that's because it adds colour to my pantry. LOL

Today when i was shopping i bought a box of 480 Little wishes (woolies brand) wipes from Big W for $14somethin and to buy the huggies 240 pack its $13somethin. When i opened them at home they are just as thinck as huggies wipes and smell better. Its a big saving when u use wipes heaps like i do.

me and DH are LOVEING the crunchy nut cornfalkes aldi barnd. there is NO difference and the box is HUGE I think were saving bout $3-4 and Dh LOVEEESSSS crunchy nut cornflakes...
We buy all our cleaning products, toilet paper, canned food and busicuts at aldis! Aldis rocks and i work next door so I go there like I would woolies. the milk is fine there as well.
The only thing i DO have a bit of a problem with is that most of the products we buy at aldis or the cheaper versions of things at woolies are usually imported from over seas and i think its pretty bad not being able to suport OUR farmers and things like that but saying that... they are cheaper
I hve to admit, I like colours which is why I don't buy as much homebrand stuff (and possibly why I don't like to shop at woolies)
I also like the "You'll Love Coles" brand... but I think that's because it adds colour to my pantry. LOL
pmsl this is me too....its got to be colourful and has to smell good!!
I do buy homebrand cheese, cheezels for the kids,flour,sugar,milk....like Ally said,do they have cheap cows or what..milk is milk, eggs is eggs....
I also buy Woolies select Nappies but I don't consider Select range as Homebrand as it is not much cheaper in anything.
lol still laughing at seekrit....least you admitted it LOL:p
seekrit- we might not have any money when we die but at least we had red strawberry smelling bin liners:smiliedance: :D
I buy a lot of home brand stuff which can't be any different ie: sugar, flour etc.
I have found that Target brand nappies 48 for $10 is good value  . Nappylinks on the web also have those cheap ones mentioned, they also deliver for $3.50. I found some baby wipes in Big W for $3.80 for 320 wipes 'little angels' I think they are called they are quite ok.
The only home brand products I don't like are toilet paper and tissues as too scratchy. Also like nice conditioner!
lol still laughing at seekrit....least you admitted it LOL
:p :p This is why I like Bilo brand. It's RED and it has a photo of what you're buying so it's got other colours. :p
And Debster, I'm with you. I hate cheap toilet paper. Husband doesn't understand, I told him that if he used it more than 3 time a day then he can have an option over how much I spend on TP.
coles brand english muffins
coles brand fruit english muffins
and home brand cheese - only because dh bought it by accident one day and i didn't even notice the diference ( i have a thing for refusing to eat anything dairy that is home brand, i have to have pura brand or dairy farmers milk or i won't drink it etc)
thats all i can think of for now....

We buy most things Bi-Lo brand-
in our fridge/pantry right now we have Bi-Lo brand Pasta, Tuna, Rice, Can diced tomatoes, Corned Beef, Cheese, Weetbix, Coco pops, Taco Kit, Cornflour, Cling Wrap, Freezer Bags, Frozen Corn, Ice Cream, Alfredo Pasta Mix, Tomato Sauce, Parmesan Cheese, Coconut Cream, Tomato Paste, Sultanas and Cream.
So we're not short of Bi-Lo brand products in this house lol, the only things we don't buy Bi-Lo brand are Cream Cheese and Mayo. When we were using disposables nappies for our boys Bi-Lo brand we're really good and the Woolies brand "little wishes" wipes are really good too!!! Now we're only using disposables at night i get premium factory seconds at Nappy World and they're just as good.
Coles homebrand mint slice biccies are as good as the expensive ones...the woolies homebrand ones aren't too great tho.
You guys have got me thinking about what I actually do buy, and most things seem to be homebrand, unless the brand name ones are on special and are cheaper.
I'm like alot of you tho...gotta have soft loo paper and tissues, and nice conditioner :D
Home brand cheese rings are fantastic.... better than the real Cheezels and about 1/4 the price!!

Won't always go to buy the Home Brand though - I find "Woolworths" brand (blue and green I think) often cheaper eg, milk and cream.
I always check the other brands too because you can save money with different sizes
Home Brand is good for anything in a can. And at the end of the day, HomeBrand is usually just a resell of another brand (ie, Home Brand cake mixes are actually Greens)

Someone's probably already said it, but the Aldi nappies are fantastic and super cheap. For the 4 - 9kg size you get 56 nappies for $16!
I also buy Lectric Soda washing powder ($1.99 - comes in a bag) and put it into an old washing powder box... hope that doesn't make me sound too cheap! :D

I went to Woolies instead of Bi-Lo last week, and got some excellent Home Brand bargains!!!
Got some home brand coco pops, a 700g box for $2.10 !!! I have tried bi-lo brand coco pops before and they weren't the same as kelloggs, but these woolies home brand taste exactly the same!!!

I usually shop at either Woolies or Coles and buy as much as i can in either Home Brand or Farmland. My husband is a big salt & vinegar chip fanatic and preferd the farmland brand to any other brand. The only Homebrand stuff that i wont buy is 2-minute noodles and the packet pasta (eg Alfredo etc.) but besides that i can tell the difference I dont see myself as being a cheapscape i see it as saving money that we can use towards bill etc.
