Arrival of Alexander, No. 4 baby, My little oopsy.

Well this baby was a major surprise baby due to the fact my youngest was only 5 months old when Alex was conceived. Thanks to a bottle of wine and watching Seal (my favourite artist bare chested in concert on DVD)
Sure i was upset by the fact he was not planned and when i found out it was another boy i was devastated.

But this boy gave me something that i have never experienced, he gave me a natural labor.
All 3 of my boys were induced which was not a problem but would of liked to experience the spontaneity of a a real labor.

I had a relitively uncomplicated pregnancy but towards the end i had SEVERE edema, my feet and legs swelled up to 4 times their size it was excruciating to walk so by the 39th week i was desperate to have this baby come out, so on January 7th i asked my Obs to book me in for an induction for the next day, he did an internal (under my instructions) and said that i had dialated very little, but had told me that it means nothing that i could go into labor anytime to which i said "yeah right" i had no confidence that my body could do it, but he was very encouraging and said that i could and that some women just dialate very quickly when in labor.

At 38 weeks i did loose a bit of my plug but i still did not believe it would happen for me anytime soon.
After my Obs visit i went down to my mums and had felt a big huge blob come out, and sure enough it was some more mucus plug.

I organised for Sebie to be looked after by my mother as i was booked for the induction and she had the other 2 boys stay over for the night.

DH and i had a lovely evening at home just cuddling and watching a movie, my bags were already packed as i had to be in Hospital the next morning at 7.30 am.

Went to bed at around 10 pm. i was in a deep sleep (and when i say deep i mean deep) I was awoken or should i say jolted by this intense pain i was getting in my lower abdomen, it definately felt like an contraction, again when it was over i dismissed it and cursed my body to stop fooling me!

Then in 20 mins another one, again in 20 mins another one they continued till about 5 am 20 mins apart then they intensified to 10 mins apart by 6 am they were 6 mins apart and i was in agony, (they were exactly like my induced contractions very powerful).

At 6 am i got a call from the hospital saying that they had to cancel my induction, they said they had 9 women in labor and that their was no room for me, they had women labouring in the Tea room and in the waiting room, i cried to them and said " i don't need the induction i am in actual labor" Iwas then told to wait it out at home and see what happens as if i came in they would have no where to put me.

I was so distraught!!! My first normal labour and this happens!!

Dh and i rang my Obs Dennis and he said the best thing we could do is be near the hospital, since we live 45 mins away from there, so Dh and i went down to bunnings i stayed in the car and by the time he came back into the car i was in so much pain, everyone was looking at me hit the dashboard and the roof with each contraction they were 5 mins apart!! So we rang the hospital and said we were comming, they were great and said not to worry they will sort something out.

I got to hospital at 9 am prior to arrival i rang my dear friend Doula Relle / maybe3 who was going to support me during my labour.

I was in the tea room where they set up a bed for me where i continued to labor, by 2 pm the had a delivery suit ready for me, by this time my contractions were still 5 mins apart but lasting 2mins. My dear friend was great at coaching me through the contractions.

Midwife came in and said to me we'll check you out and see how much dialation has occured she did the internal and would you guess there absoloutely nothing to report!! She bluntily told me that i was in false labor that i should go home and take 2 sleeping tablets and sleep it off.

Apparently the look on my face was a killer one!! i wanted to smack her! I knew i was in labor i now what contractions feel like, but then i started doubting myself maybe she was right, i knew it my body couldn't do it. Relle snapped me out of that!! I said out loud i am not going home well the head nurse must of heard me , she came right in the middle of a nasty contraction and confirmed that i was in actual labor and said you are not going home.

The pain was getting worse i was still not dialating, so my ( the other went home) current midwife said to me honey i have been reading up your file and it seems that when you have pain relief you dialate do you want to try an epi, to which i said Oh yes please!

Well i had the epi then about 1 hour later my Obs came in expecting to find nothing he did an internal with a big grin on his face he said to the midwife 7 -8 my face perked up and said what, he said you are dialated 7 -8 cms! I was extatic Relle was great she said see Ros you did it!!

Dennis broke my waters then with in 2 mins i was fully dialated, then with in 5 pushes i saw my son being born! ( i was sitting upright and saw everything)

Alexander was born 6 days early of his own accord on the 8 th January at 6.02 pm.

No tearing just a nice healthy baby.

The end.

I want to thank Maybe3 for being the best Doula / friend !

Wow big day for people to have babies. Congrats to you :) I had my little girl the same day at 7:02pm (Western Standard time) so a few hours behind you. I was very lucky, as I was the only person in labour at my hospital, and I got a LOT of attention. If she had been born around Xmas/boxing day, apparently I would have been in a very similar situation to you.....
