When i was 12 weeks preg i discovered a huge lump in my arm which was a dvt from my elbow to my clavicle and also a suspicious one in my chest due to large amounts of pain. They put me on 80mg clexane twice a day. I'm now 31wks and terrified of giving birth. My first 2 preg were great quick and easy and this one has been horrible. I live in the country and my ob has not much idea what they are going to do. I need some advice?

Anyone who has an idea of what they will do with me would be very muchly appreciated.

Hi there,

I have been on Clexane before (although not when pregnant). I got a DVT after spraining my knee playing netball. I was on it for about 6 months. I did have to go and see a haematologist when pregnant with my first child as my OB wanted to get a professional opinion on whether I was at risk of another DVT when pregnant. Luckily I didn't need to take it.

I do know of other people who have been on Clexane (for non-pregnancy related issues) and if they have been going to have surgery they have been taken off it a little while before the surgery as it makes your blood thinner and they don't want the person to loose too much blood.

Maybe you should ask your OB to refer you to a haematologist as they would have a much better idea of how this should be managed for you. I would be guessing they would take you off it before your due date so that you wouldn't loose too much blood during delivery and then perhaps start you on Clexane again just after the birth.

Maybe also ring the maternity unit of your hospital and have a chat to the midwives there as they will need to know about this (even though your OB knows, I know that each pregnancy when booking in, they have asked me about any illnesses and this was included). The midwives certainly don't want to get any surprises either.

For your own peace of mind try to get as much professional advice as possible.

Hope this may help you a bit. All the best for your pregnancy and even though it has been stressful for you, try to think of the wonderful reward you will have in 10 weeks time when you hold your beautiful little bub in your arms ......

My sister was on clexlane her entire pregnancy ... everything went well, in the end they induced her so they could manage her medication ... the birth was a drug free, relatively quick one (I was there as support person) ... only problem was they had to cut her so of course the bleeding didn't stop, but they monitored her. And went home 2 days later.

She had no issues/problems since.

Good luck with your delivery ...

Hi lygl,

I had a GF that was on Warfarin Pre-pregnancy and had clexane her entire pregnancy (pregnancies - she has just had bub number 4!) she did however have C-Sections with all 4. Trust your doctors - I'm sure they will advise you appropriately.

ok i am not on 80 mg at the moment as they just want me to take a preventative dose so i am only on 40mg a day. with my first bubs they switched me to heparin twice daily at 36 weeks so if i needed a c-section or an epi i culd have it without too much delay - the heparin leaves the body sooner than clexane.

then the might induce you to help reduce labour time so you are off the drugs for a short time (i was off them for 5 days for the birth of my first and ended up with a clot in my leg again)

after the birth you could go on tablets (warfarin) that are safe while breastfeeding or stay on the injections - it will be your choice.

any other questions feel free to ask.

Hi there! I am also on 40mg clexane injections daily aswell as the 75mg asprin - as a preventative treatment due to being a carrier of the gene.

I am 24 weeks pregnant with my second and I am terrified about what my (& bubs) outcome will be! I am at the womens and childrens hospital here in Perth. I have a low lying placenta and am also on 300mg efexor & 30 mirtazapine (anti-depressants). Bub has been in the breach position since day dot and I am terrified that she will remain breach for the birth, my placenta will not rise up to where it should be and that I will have to go in for an emergency c-section and then further complications may exist. My sister has just phoned to talk to me about making some practical steps with my husband in regards to our 3year old son incase anything happens to me during the labour. Now I am petrified.
I don't want to miss out of seeing my son grow up! and I dont want to miss out of growing old with my husband!
Melodramatic?? ...... hey I'm pregnant! ;)
