View Full Version : Conceiving the "old-fashioned" way, how long did it take you?

After the disaster of my last thread, I figured I'd close it and try again without the miscommunication. Once again, my apologies to anyone who misinterpreted what I wrote.

My fiance and I are planning on starting TTC in May this year and I was wondering how many people on these forums have concieved the "old-fashioned" way and, if planned, how long did it take from start of TTC to confirmation of the bundle of joy?

Dear GloomCookie,

I knew what you were trying to say. I personally had 6 miscarriages and we have managed to have a beautiful daughter. With all of my pregnancies all I did was guestimate my next period as my cycle is regular (like clockwork) for 28 days. I counted back 14 days before what I thought would be the date of my next period and then practiced, practiced and practiced some more hugs: . Funny thing is when I fell in with Faith I miscalculated by a day. I though I was ovulating on the Saturday but it was the Sunday (Damn now I have told you what we were doing on Sunday) laughing: . But I never used charts etc. and I suppose you could say I was using help but it really came down guess work and practice. Just luckily I miscalculated. My sister in law has had 4 kids and did it just by practice. My twin neices were conceived a day apart (how weird is that) . I still can't tell them apart though.

First child - first cycle.

second child - a couple of months, until we paid attention to the timing and then bingo!

We were very lucky.

Wishing you the same ease.

After 5 years of pill/implanon I managed to get pregnant first cycle! :smiliedance: very lucky I must admit!

I didn't use any charting or what-not, but I was armed with knowledge of what fertile cervical mucus looked like so I used as a guage.. but to be honest, my libido skyrocketed for that month so we were doing it evey day anywas! :D :D

First child at 24 - took over 18 months, we ended up using Billings

Second child at 34, after 6 months we reached for an OPK, and hit it that cycle.

Third child at 39, reached straight for the OPK, hit it first time.

We weren't officially trying, but in saying that, we weren't using any protection for almost 2 years before we conceived. As it turned out, Andrew was conceived a few weeks after we got married, so we like to think that fate just wanted him to be born to us after we had rings on our fingers  It was a really lovely surprise for us, to find out at 10w3d ! A wonderful birthday present for me

Now we are actively trying for No.2 and knowing it took 2 years last time, I'm paying a lot of attention to the more technical side, although hubby prefers the more old-fashioned slapdash way! :D

Reposting here.......:D

I came off contraception after 12 years without a break and was lucky enough to fall pregnant after my first cycle.

We began trying with the notion that it could take a while, and I thought that particularly because I had been on contraception so long my body would take a while to get back inot the "normal" swing.

Godd luck for when you do TTC

I stopped taking the pill, but we weren't trying very hard.
After about 6-7 months i read up a bit on ovulation and figured out when i was most fertile. I fell pregnant about 2 months later.

Me and my partner decided to ttc about 6months after we had been together.I had been on the pill for about 4 yrs and my Af was all over the place getting it about every 40days.We tried for about 7months with no luck so i went in search for some information and came accross a ovulation calender that calculates when you ovulate.I fell pregnant the next months in total i had been trying for 8 months. We decided to ttc when my dd was 6months old i had only really just got af back after breast feeding my daughter i looked staright at my calender and conceived #2 within 2 months:thumbsup: :fingerscrossed: for when you ttc and can be hard and very frustrating when you are really wanting that bub.

DS - took about 6 or 7mths of not using any protection...we weren't really trying, more thinking 'if it happens, it happens'.

DD - I read up a bit on gender selection as we were both really hoping for a girl, the first grandaughter for both families. I must have timed things right coz within 2mths I was preg with my DD :D

Hi,
You may have seen my thread. "After so long....."
It took us 41 cycles!! for ever!
My Nana took six years to have her first child.
So maybe there is a little bit of genetics involved, who knows.

That whole thing about mystery and miracle, is dead on accurate.
We did charts, diet, the lot.
I am only a few days + so we'll see.:fingerscrossed:
Good luck to you.
cheers Rach

lol thats what happened to me too :D Well actually the pill was making me ill so when i got my period i stopped taking the pill and told my fiance that if he didnt want kids then he should do something about it, that was the last time i got my period.

My first 2 kids took a little longer. DD about 18 months and DS about 8 months

Well, im ttc - a bit half hearted at the moment though, havnt been especially well. I have been on the pill for 16 years - since i was 14 (for medical reasons!!) I only stopped taking it in January. Somebody mentioned in a post they could tell from cervical mucus they could tell they were ovulating. How (as u can see i know alot !)? Do things 'look' different?

As an addition to my not knowing anything about cervical mucus (still feels a bit weird just 'saying' it) I notice abrieviations people use and testing methods - i had a look at the forum where there are some explanations for most abreviations - but if nobody minds im going to have to start asking for some 'please explains' - some of the posts have so many in it i cant follow! So bear with me, i will learn them eventually!

#1 - 1 weekend (not planned but a lovely surprise - first time in the 7 years we had been together that we had unprotected sex)

#2 - 1 week (just had sex every day for a week around the time I thought I might be ovulating, didn't actually think it would happen so quickly!)

We seem to be very lucky & very fertile. My husband thinks we are so fertile that I just have to look at him and I fall pregnant. I just count our lucky stars.:D

Took nine months for me to fall pregnant the first time after coming off the pill.
Thats three months of "rumpy pumpy" whenever. Three months of planned "rumpy" (when I was ovulating) then back to "rumpy" whenever.
Second pregnancy; "rumpy" once and BAM pregnant.
I dont plan to go back on the pill so hubby better go get the snip if he doesnt want us to have any more children!:p

I was always told i wouldnt fall pregnant - or have alot of trouble trying. So when my pill has playing havoc with my system and the doc took me off to wait for my cycle to return, i thought nothing of being late.

It appears that it took DF and I 1 month or less to fall... I know that we are VERY VERY lucky.

Your cervical mucus goes to an "Egg White" consistancy when you're most fertile, and it can be stretched between your fingers. It's normally just on the toilet paper when you wipe for a wee, and if you're so inclined you can play with it to see if it's stretchy VIA the toilet paper.
In a few rare cases one can have bleeding associated with their fertile Cervical Mucus, which doesn't normally happen but it's bleeding caused by ovulation. I had that, we did the rumpy-pumpy thing (for the 34th time that month i'm sure) and bada-bing-bada-boom.
I think it goes creamy afterwards, if you're pregnant? Mine did at least.
And I like to use phrases like CM :p it's less ewwie.

I think honeymoon babies are great. Not that the others aren't as well of course. :)

My fiance has been wanting a baby since about 6 months into our relationship but I wanted to be married first, so if all goes to plan this will be my wedding gift to him. :D He's been waiting 7 years for it and I love how excited he's been while we've been discussing it lately. I can't wait. :fingerscrossed:

DjF, I think there's a thread in the welcome section which explains the abbreviations, very useful for a newcomer.
Ah, check out: http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=5331

Oscar's mum - yeah creamy CM and didn't dry up like usual, stayed around instead.

Gloom Cookie - off the pill 6 months to prep my body (get rid of all the rubbish synthetic hormones) before ttc, then on the Atkins diet to lose weight and rearrange my stuffed up hormones (I have PCOS). TTC while on the diet, got my BFP one month after being told my testosterone was normal, and after losing 18kg. Learnt some stuff about CM along the way (thanks bubhub girls) to which I credit my BFP, as we weren't really trying that month, just taking a breather from ttc, but then I thought my CM was perfect and voila! Never really understood all the charting and temps and gizmos, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been much longer before I checked it out because I was pretty keen to get knocked up! So, my method: getting to know the stickier side of my body (and some regular "rumpy pumpy" as you call it); end result: one little bundle of joy due in August. Not a bad equation, if you ask me.

I don't need to date my pregnancies from LMP, cos we always fell when we were expecting to. DH is a "one hit wonder - 3 times." I'll keep having kids until I'm 50 even if we only do "it" once in a blue moon ;)

Time for some more permanent methods I think, as we are more fertile than anyone I have ever met before.

Someone once said to me, sex is so different when you are TTC, doesn't it become robotic? I wouldn't know, what do others think?

I dont find the actual love making robotic but most definately afterwards. Usually hubby and I will relax and not move for a while, now we are TTC as soon as we finish I lift my backside and he shoves all the pillows under me! - Really not that romantic so I would have to say for us thats where the robotics comes into it!

I was advised that having sex every 2nd day can help you fall quickly. I think thats because you are pretty much garunteed to get a day that you are ovulating.

I'm not that inclined or energetic! I did try do it naturally for about six months but now its been another 6 and I've found out we have low fertility so I've turned to the OPKs for assistance.

Imamum2b
22-03-2006, 14:58
We hadn't been using contraception for about 2 years but avoided the most fertile days.

Once we decided we were TTC, we were rewarded in the first month - we did do it during the perfect time though (those 3-4 days of CM).

Also, the tip the dr's tell you about staying on your back and raising your pelvis afterwards with a pillow works! My friend tried for 12 months then got that tip and BINGO! (I also did this and who knows, may have helped?)

BTW, I have a 28 day cycle and my peak day was not exactly 14 days before my period as most websites and books say. Trust your body - basal temp & CM is the key.

As for robotic - when you become obsessedd with doing it on the right days, it put a dampener on it all. We had decided to try 3 months prior to conceiving but it adds pressure to do it on particular days.

We got preggers on the 3rd or 4th month of trying. I used the OPK for all but the last month....we were more relaxed and not TRYING so hard.... We had decided that if we didnt get pregnant that month it didnt matter, there was a promotion at work I wanted so we were going to put off trying..... :)

Bingo...it happened! :)

DH and I went off the pill in Sept last year and started trying like crazy! Unfortunately my body reacted badly to going off the pill after 16 years and I developed ovarian cysts which weren't bad, just painful and meant that I really didn't want to practice! They have gone now, but I'm finding it difficult to be enthusiastic all the time - I am for day 1 and 2, but then I feel like its a bit robotic, which is not what I want for my baby's conception.

In any case, we have decided to relax for a few months and then if it hasn't happened by itself, I will start timing, charting etc.

Howdy,
We didn't chart or anything. My period wasn't really set days because I wasn't on the pill; we were using condoms as contraception until we started 'trying'. It only took 3 months. 1st month I think we started a bit too late and it was everyday for about a week, then the next month we 'practiced' every day for about a week or so and nothing eventuated. Then the third month, we 'practiced' every 2nd day for about 2 weeks and one of the days was a morning practice and I think that's what did it. But I don't know. I wasn't really taking a lot of notice of the charts and things because it would worry me more! I expected it would take a while because I had endometriosis! How wrong I was! We also practiced every now and then in between.

I don't know about anyone else but I always find while I have my period, that's when my libido is the highest!!! Bizarre hey!

My partner and I had only been together for 2months when I fell pregnant... The first month we used protection and then 2nd we didnt as I had extremely bad period pains for a few years and decided that maybe I should go to the doc as they were getting worse- they said that it was more than likely endemetriosis... and as my mum had it and hadnt been able to fall pregnant for AAAAAAAAAAAGES, I thought it would be a similar case for me so not me falling pregnant didnt cross my mind. Now, 4 months on- we couldnt be more excited about having this bub... nervous and ****ting ourselves... but excited.

I just kinda wish we'd had abit more time to work on our relationship before this happened... but, if I guess- if it was meant to happen, it was meant to happen.:)
