there in melbourne u might have to just email them for the price.
That's pretty expensive!! I'm a little shocked!
All I've ever had to pay, and we've had our 3 sons done, is around $150 or so, and that was before medicare!!

I thought that kind of price was only for older kids. I had our DS done last year at a month old and it cost $150 before medicare. Apparently as they get older it becomes more expensive? Maybe after 3 or so months it has to be a GA (our Ob that did DS said he did it in his surgery between 2 weeks and 3 months, after that was in hospital).

My son is being circed this week by a general surgeon in his rooms. 3 consultations - preop, procedure and postop cost around $400 before medicare.

Hi,
I have had all my boys done before 5 weeks of age. I took them to a vascular surgeon who obviously performs circumcision. I rang to make the booking, they asked me their age, and they booked them in. We went in to his rooms, had a quick little chat, then they take them away for 5 - 10 minutes or so, while we go for a walk outside. By the time DH had time to have a smoke, then a couple of minutes more, the nurse had come outside and told me that the little guy wanted a feed now, and it was done!
At 15 months, I'm guessing they will be putting him under an anasthetic to get it done. If they're not, I;d be questioning it. It will probably be performed in a hospital too, therefore making it more expensive

Hi,
For what's it's worth, here's my two cents worth...
I have actually booked my son in for tomorrow. It is costing us $250 and will get about half back from medicare (so we've been told). Our son will be 3 weeks and 2 days tomorrow. Where we are going they do the procedure up until 3 months.
They gave us a rundown of what will happen when we are there...
We watch a short video about the procedure, how it's done etc, and then the doctor (who is also an obs) is there to answer any questions we may have. If we decide that it's not for us then we can leave with no charge. If we do decide to go ahead with it then it's done there in his rooms. We don't have to be present in the room (though DH wants to). Should only take 10-15 minutes. Once done the doctor won't let us leave until DS has had a feed and is content.
With your son being older, like M,T & J's Mum said, I'd imagine that he'd have to go under general and it would be done in a hospital, thus the reason why it would be more expensive.
I hope that is of help.

hey tehre..im from s/e subs in melb too. My son had his circumcision done in a bulk bill clinic in dandenong and its was only $160 and i got back $50 from medicare..i surveyed everywhere wen he was born and i was recomemded this doctor. he did a great job and my son was all better in abt a week or so....there was no dramas and the procedure was done pretty quickly under anasthetic so that was a relief for me...if youre still looking for a cheaper alternative to $1500 i can gve you his details..:smiliedance:

Hi Guys, we are going to become new parents for the first time in the new year and dont know what we are having but if we have a little boy we wish to get him circumcised and are having trouble finding unbiased info on steps we need to take, like, the age, how do you go about it who do you see, where it can be done etc. We live in a smaller town with only a public hospital and we feel we will be up against alot of resistance about our decision which after all is being made for the baby's health and benefit so any hints, advice about how to get the procedure initiated if we get blessed with a little boy would be wonderful. Kindest Regards to you all.:)

We got ds done 2 weeks ago ( he was 8 days old ) by one of the head pediatric surgeons at Sydney childrens hospital in his consulting rooms, it cost $710 and we get back $320 from Medicare. he is apparently the best in Sydney and we had to book in advance, it was a very easy procedure, we both watched ( you don't have too!) he gave him a local , waited 10 mins then did it and honestly ds slept through the whole thing , 10 days later all healed no problems, my only advice if in a small town make sure the doctor is experienced in doing it.
New Parents to Be.
Congrats on becoming parents. Good luck with the last few months of undisrupted sleep:)
This website has a great deal of info:
http://www.circinfo.net/
At the top there is a link to "circ clinics Aust & NZ", which list a few doctors who perform it.
In regard to the 'steps'. If the above link doesn't have any places nearby, I would just call the local hospital (maternity ward) and ask them to give you a list of doctors in the area who perform it. When I did this, they happily gave me half a dozen to start with.
Or, just call some local doctors in the area and ask them.
Once you have found a doctor (that uses the method you would like), everything else is easy.
In regard to age, well, that is both a personal decision and a doctor's preferences. Some doctors will only do them when they are newborn (under a local), some will only do them after 6 months (under a general and a fair bit more expensive).
I personally think the earlier the better.
Good luck with it all!

:wave:Thankyou for the info, we are grateful for all advice. Good luck to all of you with your beautiful families.:)
I was told it would be free as long as he was no older than 6 weeks (had a health care card though)
