Hey ladies,
Ok we have come to a pretty scary issue with DD2 atm, She is now aspirating most liquids that enter her mouth.
One of my main concerns is with the Meds, I have always had a problem giving her Mylanta for instance, she would go bright blotchy red, her eyes almost pop out of her head, she retches and gasps for air, its one of the most frightening moments I have ever dealt with.
I am seeing a speach pathologist that has suggested we do a barrium study before we see our gi on the 31st of January, so he can have the results and make a decision from there.
I am also really worried about some other strange things she is doing, it seems it is due to pain but I am really not quite sure, while awake and seeming to be in pain she kicks her legs profusly and also flaps her head from side to side. I was not TOO concerned as I guessed it was a coping machanism to the pain, but now she is doing it in her sleep. It really concerns me. Its scary and makes me wonder what else could be wrong...
I also am having issues with it taking about 5- 20 minutes to convince DD2 that she is hungry, 5 being an awsome feed, 20 being painfully long... then we have the battle of keeping her attatched to the bottle. pulling away and arching etc. But she is still taking her whole feed the majority of the time.
Her breathing is quite rapid at times and at others she seems to be taking large deap laboured breaths.
I had a look on the IRD sight, and I was reading about asthma in Infants, which my mother actually pointed out that it seems she might have asthma, as My mum has dealt with two pretty severe cases of asthma, my brother and my sister, I have only a mild case.
Thanks for Reading.:ecomcity:

If she is aspirating frequently then you should have a barium study quickly. Do u have a decent paed or are u stuck with one of those hopeless ones that doesn't have time to help properly.
When my DD first dx with reflux, I had a barium within a day, If she was aspirating then it was immediate surgery to correct the reflux because of the risk of pneumonia and not breathing. She wasn't aspirating, she was protecting her air ways so we could wait until she had gotten over prior surgeries.
All of the breathing things u are describing can be associated with aspiration....... The issue with not wanting to take feeds will probably be the beginning of oral aversion due to reflux
Please remember though I am just interpreting what you are writing, sometimes things get lost in the translation, Good luck, I would probably take her to the emergency dept and tell them she is aspirating, they should check immediately

:hugs:.
Sounds like a horrible time for you and your DD. I agree that it sounds like she is in pain, by the actions you describe. Could deffinatly be reflux. On the other hand, my DD has all of the above including athsma, and the symptoms we 1st saw of her athsma was a wheeze when placed on her chest.
With the aspiration, the dr's really should see that as a prority and get your DD in for the barrium asap! Our DD had one the day I brought it up and it did show slight aspiration and also nasal regurgitation. Its something that really needs to be done to be on the safe side.
Something you can think about in the mean time is using Karicare food thickener with all your DD's fluids. It really helps reflux kids and also makes it a bit safer for kids with aspiration ect to drink, as its harder to aspirate than thin fluids.
Other than that, get onto a decent dr who realises something needs to be done.

Hey ladies thx so much for you quick replies,
Sorry i should have mentioned that DD2 has had 2 chest xrays showing fluid but no pneumonia, and has had a barrium swallow that actually confirmed aspiration on swallowing, but not on refluxing that we saw, but due to her being on her back and upset they brushed it off.
Then we had DD2's 4 month immunisations and she aspirated the Rota virus vax, wich it a capsule that is squeezed into there mouth.
The Dr was worried but sent us home anyway, that night dd was very irritable and struggling breath, i took her back first thing the next morning and she called our paed and got us an emergency spot then we went for our xray and it confirmed fluid on her lung, and we saw the paed who then arranged for us to see the speachy we got in three days later and she is now organising the barrium study at the royal.
It has taken some time to prove to our paed there is a swallowing issue, she has reflux and is on 20 mg of losec and on neocate.
I guess the study will show a little more about the reluxing and aspirating, is it similar to how the barrium swallow is done but with a video?

The study is real time, and yeah, videod. heaps more reliable. I dont get why they havent started her on thickened fluids then...

i know what you mean. Alex is 18 months and only has what little puree we can get down her throat and elecare. We're seeing a new pead and local speechies this thursday to discuss a ng tube. hmmm. :gloomy:
It'd be great to give Alex a bikky and her eat it no problems. But thats just not reality and what doesnt kill us makes us stronger  apparently.
Alex is having her tonsils and adnoids out in march (if she gains some condition) and palet repair at the same time. So hopefully that'll sort her out

Oh Good Luck with all that, how awful for our little ones to go through so much **** at sucha young age, or ever at that matter.
I am sure everything will go well with Alex, She is adorable by what i can see in your default picture :D
I am anxiously waiting my phone call or letter from the hospital to tell us a time for this Barrium Study.

What is it with the QLD doctors ????? Aspirating is aspirating, lungs = breathing?????? Confirmed by barium swallow and X ray, why don't they act and admit you and get it sorted out, no waiting, as an inpatient u would get all your testing in a day, Your paed should know that.
Barium studies are very straight forward, the worst part is holding them down but it is quick and painless. If the first test showed aspiration then so will the second, It will show if she is refluxing too though. It just proves what they already know from you!!!!!
Sorry but doctors make me angry sometimes!!!!!!!!
