And was hoping you might be able to help?

We went on hols to the south island of NZ last year and on the road between (I think) Lake Tekapo and Queenstown there was a stretch of road that had HUNDREDS of little piles of stones by the road side. Some were large piles, some towers of stacked stones (one long low one actually had a pair of gumboots sticking out the bottom, like someone had been buried there :D).

I have googled without sucess, I can't find any reference to it anywhere. Can anyone tell me why everyone seems to stop and build a little pile of rocks as they travel by? I'd like to include a reference to it in our travel diary.

Im not sure about NZ but in Iceland they do them to mark trails. It was something that came about with the vikings they are called ' rock cairns'.

There is also a field now where travellers & tourists build their own to have a safe journey cant remember what that was called.

So yeah probably totally different but thought id share :o

Hi All
Thanks so much for answering (I also got some links via PM - thanks).

I think that's fantastic that ppl just have come to do for the hell of it - that rocks ( pardon the pun).

And Truly, thanks for confirming the road for me. We had cranky girls and didn't want to be on the road for any longer than really necessary - but I do wish we'd taken some photos (esp of the gum boots).

Cheers
