View Full Version : Tea Tree Oil
Just in case anyone is going through the same thing, my DD had extremely dry skin in the creases at the front of her legs/top of her feet. It would dry and flake and crack and bleed and it didn't help when she discovered she could scratch it! This went on from 3mnth to about 6mnths of age.
We tried sorbolene, fragrance-free washes & moisturisers and even zinc-based nappy rash cream but nothing would clear it up. Then we tried tea-tree oil and it worked brilliantly. She is now completely healed - the difference is amazing.
I can't say I have used Tea Tree Oil to treat Eczema but that stuff is pretty universal, I find it useful for lot's of things!
You just rubbed the oil on? Or did you buy cream?
I put a couple of drops of tea tree oil onto a cotton pad (like used for removing makeup) then just 'patted' or 'dabbed' her rash with it. It's good to get into the habit of doing it every nappy change and I usually see results within a week.
Currently back on the tea tree oil for her chest this time - teething=lots of drool so now she's developed a saliva rash on her chest, poor thing. This is even with us being vigilant about keeping bibs around her neck!

Tea Tree Oil is a winner, thank you so much for the suggestion! DD's eczema was horrible in the last few weeks, she has really ripped a lot of skin off and it took two of us to put her medicated cream on her - one to apply the cream the other to try and comfort her as she screamed in pain. I has some tea tree oil cream in the cupboard for sunburn and after I read the suggestion here, decided to give it a go as we pretty much try any suggestion out there. I did a test patch and applied it a couple of times during the day adn the result was remarkable. Within the first day all the redness was taken out of it, the scaly skin had gone and it wasn't raised and swollen.
A million thanks Leanda! :yelclap:
As a *qualified* aromatherapist....just be careful with the teatree oil. You should dilute it before putting on bubby....1 part teatree to 5 parts carrier oil. Sweet almond is a good carrier oil.

I started trying the tea tree oil as Cameron has this eczema-like rash on the tops of her feet. I say eczema-like because the doc diagnosed it as eczema and it does look like it but it kinda started off as a reaction from shoes that I was putting on him.
Anyway, I have a few questions that I was hoping you could answer:
1. Does it sting a little? I tried it on face (no particular reason why i chose my face, just did!) and it stung just a tiny bit.
2. On CAmeron's feet, it made the flaky skin white as though it was drier. Is this normal?????
3. Did you just use tea-tree oil exclusively because I have been using Dermeze so should continue to use Dermeze or not?
For Brenny - what is a carrier oil and where can I get some sweet almond oil? If I make a 'batch' so that it is ready for me to use, how long does it keep for?
Thanks!
A carrier oil is an oil that you can use as a diluting medium that doesnt impart its properties on the substance your placing it in. For eg: If you place ribena in water..water is the codials carrier fluid..so to speak.
As far as I know sweet almond is available form most health food shops, maybe the chemists too.
Carrier oil
Carrier oil, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, nor do they evaporate like them.
There are a range of different carrier oils each with their own individual properties and suitability towards different treatments in aromatherapy. Infused oils are a combination of a carrier oil and various herbs.
True carrier oils are generally cold-pressed vegetable oils taken, amongst others:
Sweet almond
Grapeseed
Avocado
Olive
Sesame
Evening primrose
Sunflower
Jojoba
Nuts:
Walnut
Peanut
Pecan
Macadamia nut
Sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil are the most popular carrier oils.

We have been using a tea tree moisturiser which means we don't have to fiddle around with any oils and mix them up. DD skin has almost completely cleared!
Tea tree oil is magic stuff! DP has horrible scaly tinea-ish feet and we tried everything to get rid of it, even prescription cortizone creams. A foot bath with a few drops of tea tree oil in it cleared up the problem within a few days. Gets rid of all the itchyness, redness and scaly bits. It flares up every now and then, but then we just bathe his feet again. Problem solved.
That's great news about your daughter's rash Chelle! :)
Hi my bub has excema too so I am going to give this a go as the doctor wanted Tyger to go back for another appointment to put him on medication but I would prefer a natural type.
Same problem where he dribbles or is sick it flames up immediately even though I am careful to keep his top dry and change him frequently. Also has it all on his back.
Will try the health food shop, I guess you are talking pure oil with the sweet almond - how do you mix it? Eye dropper

IT'S WORKING!! IT'S WORKING!! WOO HOO!!! Thank you sooo much Leanda for sharing this.
Cameron's had eczema on his feet since he was about 2months old and we've been using sigmacort and cortival cream on and off since then. The doctors told me it'd take about 7-10 days before it would clear up completely but that never happened. When I realised, it was actually healing it, I started to use it until it clears up a little then stop as I was worried about the skin thinning.
I've also tried sorbolene, QV wash, QV flare up oil, Avene (which smells beautiful), Gaia (also smells beautiful), Dermaid, Dermeze, QV Kids Balm, Sorbolene/Glycerine, and anything else which contains no alcohol, fragrance or too much chemical...... nothing actually fixed it.
I've been using the tea tree oil for a little over a week and it's cleared up MORE than what the bloomin' sigmacort and cortival ever did.
Cameron's room smells of tea tree oil but who cares!! He's feet are looking yummy - again!
Thanks again Leanda. If I ever meet you in person, I'm taking you out to dinner!

Hey, I'm just glad it's helping other people too.
The tea tree oil I purchased was in the personal care section of the local supermarket. The instructions on it said to apply directly to skin, so I did a little patch test by putting some on Ashley on a non-rash are of skin and leaving it for 24 hrs to make sure she didnt have a reaction to it. I was a bit worried that it would sting where she had scratched herself, but the bottle said it could be applied to scratches and grazes too. I don't know whether the bottle I bought was already diluted in a carrier oil, but I guess you just need to read the bottles.
I understand what Brenny is saying - pretty much all other essential oils need to be diluted for skin use cause they're very concentrated, even for adults. Please read the labels and do a patch text first!!
The drool campaign continues - how long does it take for ALL the teeth to come through?? *lol* But we're armed with a routine of plastic-backed bibs and tea tree oil now followed with a vaseline smear to give an extra moisture barrier layer. We've not won the war yet, but we're persisting!

I cna't wait until all the teeth have come through either but a part of me can't help but NOT want the teeth to come though. I guess I figure if he has all his teeth, he's not a baby anymore. NOt to mention, I'd really miss that toothless gummy smile!!
Like your babies, Cameron's also drooling but I noticed this morning that he was SLURPING his drool!! HAHAHAHHA!! It was sooooo adorable! I was watching him and his lips were already wet and it looked like there was going to be a dollop of drool overflowing out of his mouth then, "sluuuuuurrrp!"
I just wanted to come back to this thread and say I tried this out on my DS mixing 100% tea tree oil with Almond oil 5-1. His rash went from a bright red flaky skin and has almost totally cleared up after 4-5 days. I stopped using it once it cleared and now am just keeping an eye on it.
Thank you for sharing this as it is much better than buying creams etc with a whole lot of other chemicals etc.
I have an incredibly aggressive patch of eczema on my hand which cortisone does next to nothing for *sigh*. I just started using an all natural cream (natural oils and herbs etc from what the label says) called Hope's relief which is both soothing and works heaps better than cortisone. I haven't tried the tea tree as I used the last of it in the anti-nit spray last week but I might give it a go next time I run out of cream. :)
I had a facial the other day and reacted badly to one of the ointments resulting in an extremely dry red itchy rash all over my face! It's awful and highly embarrassing as you can imagine.
I've tried Dermeze and Calendulis Cream to no avail :(
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try? Since the rash is on my face would the tea tree oil be ok? It's extremely sensitive at the moment :(

It should be fine but as with any type of cream ect, you should do a test patch. Rather than oil, we are just using a tea tree moisturiser which is still working a treat!

Hi Priscilla,
Is that ok if I ask what brand of tea tree oil you used? My daughter has eczema on the skin behind both her ears, and it bothers her so much she can't sleep.
I've used the tea tree oil from Thursday Plantation - http://www.thursdayplantation.com/cmsv1/index.php. I've been using this for three days. The eczema no longer weeps, which is good, but unfortunately it's still red. But I am a bit worried because the skin become dry and crusted. Does this happen in your case?
Any advice is kindly appreciated.

Hi f_sat,
Of course you can ask! I also used the Thursday Plantation brand of tea tree oil. For Cameron, it did take about a week (from memory) and yes, his skin started to get really dry and flaky. If this is happening to you daughter than I think this is supposed to happen? When Cameron's skin started to get flaky, I put some dermeze on it. AFter a couple of day, the flaking stopped and the skin started to become smooth and eczema free.
100% tea tree oil is very strong (as you can see from the previous posts), and since then, a few people (child health nurses, pharmacists etc) have also told me that it's too strong to be using it on a baby. It does sting a little (as I tried it on my face out of curiosity) and that's why I didn't use it on Cameron's neck/face area, and only used it on his feet. In saying that though, the strength of it was reason his ezcema cleared up as I've bought a bottle of Tea Tree Oil Cream (also Thursday Plantation) and it didn't do anything. Maybe as one of the other mum's have suggested on this thread, try mixing it with a carrier oil so it's not as strong.
For Cameron's neck and face, I only use dermeze which is 100% paraffin and works within a few days of using it. You can also try it but its VERY greasy and you can use it as much as you like. I would smear it on C at every nappy change and if the ezcema's looking quite raw, I use alot - C just about looks like he's been dipped into oil by the end of it! You can get it from the pharmacy and comes in a huge tub.
Let me know how you go and feel free to pm me! It's very heartbreaking to see your child get so bothered by eczema, isn't it?!
Hi Priscilla,
Thank you for replying!
I took my daughter to Royal Children because the eczema spread to her right eyelid. The poor girl's eyes was swollen!
As the eczema is wet and weeps (it's already infected with bacteria), the doctor prescribed antibiotics. He advised us to use Sigmacort to control the flare-ups and Dermeze for mosturizer. We supposed to use the antibiotics and Sigmacort for 5 days, then we have to stop.
My wife and myself decided to follow the doctor's direction for 5 days. If this fails, I think I am going to try using wet compress.
I had eczema on my forearm once around 8-9 years ago, and I managed to cure myself using the wet compress method. Basically I prepared a bucketful of lukewarm water with 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. Then I wrapped a towel which had been dipped into the water around my limbs and have it compressed for 10-15 minutes. I did this for 2-3 times a day, and saw result within 2 weeks. Within a month my eczema was gone.
Thing is, I haven't tried this on my daughter. I just remembered how I did cure myself by chance, and I am sort of beating myself for not remembering sooner!
I'll keep you posted, and thanks for making time!
Felix

My little boy recently had signs of eczema. I treated it straight away with the tea tree oil cream and it has cleared up. I had eczema over about 80% of my body until I was about 5 and nothing would clear it up, I eventually just grew out of it.
So thanks for the tip. I am also using when bub starts to get a little redness from nappy rash and it seems to clear that up too.
I have 5 month old son who has ezcema on his face, folds of the legs and arms, neck and back. unfortunately he has ezcema on his scalp as well. I have tried so many creams on his body but the ezcema seems to reappear. i was told by the doctor to use olive oil on his scalp to moisturise it, unfortunately that doesn't seem to work.
i am going to try tea tree oil on him and would like to know whether it is okay to use it on the scalp.
very confussed first timer
