My little man is on DIMETAPP - due to a snotty nose and a cough...

he has been on it since Thursday afternoon... getting a dose usually three times a day... should I keep giving it to him??? we dont see the dr again till tuesday?? is that too long to be on an antihistamine?? I'd definately dose him at night (to help him sleep) - should I stop the day time dose??

could I give him panadol during the day and dimetapp at night - or shouldn't they be combined- gee soo many questions!!!

I meant to ask the dr... and forgot - and now it is sunday and I have no chance to even phone?!!?

thanks

Panadol and Dimetapp can be safely combined....

I would just be dosing him with the dimetapp at night and using Fess nasal drops to help clear it during the day...Also Vicks Baby Balsam is good too...Put a pillow under the mattress to help drain his nose and if you have a vapouriser, also a good idea...

Not that I have any monetary interest in these products, but they do help :D

Dimetapp and Panadol can b given at the same time, cause there different things - I always just ring the pharmacist with any questions like this they are usually fantastic and there is always a pharmacy open some-where
Panadol is for temp and pain, Dimetapp is for runny noses etc - u could try painstop which is fantastic as well - but talk to the pharmacist

I would be dropping the amount of Dimetapp, then if he got worse again I would probably up to 3 times a day again! As K.M. said you can still give him panadol as well!

Ditto to the other posts:)

Just thought Id add my doctor always told me Dimetap and all those type of meds arent the best as they usually clear up the nose but once you stop using them the nose becomes runny again, sometimes worse than before.

Whenever I did use it (maybe once or twice) this happened to me, O's nose would clear up only to come back within a day of stopping the meds, worse than before.

Just wondering if any one else had this happen to their child?

Jenny, hope your little bub feels better soon:)

Dimetapp isn't actually going to dry up the nose completely. It helps to unblock the nose due to allergies, colds etc, but it isn't going to cure them.
Also some antihistamines have a rebound effect, meaning if you use them for longer than 3 days, they can have the reverse effect of what you want them for IYKWIM

I only give dd dimetab at night to help her sleep. Not saying it puts her to sleep but it drys up her running nose enough to allow her to sleep.

The best course of action is keep getting them to blow their nose through out the day and get it out of their system. Easier said than done we very little:rolleyes:

My doctor also says the same about dimetab too much can create the opposite effect.

Panadol I use when she has temperatures or a sore head (as she tells me :) )

Goodluck

Oh if you buy the Fess Nose drops it comes with a nasal pump kinda thing that sucks all the ickky yucky stuff out of their nose! I can't remember what it is called though!

Its called an aspirator, I used one all the time with O when he was little as he was always getting a runny nose (we found out later that he gets Rhinitis)

O hated the aspirator though and we would have to hold him down physically to do it.....but it was the only way to help him get a good nights sleep:o

I'm going through the same thing with Jack at the moment. I've mean using infant demezin (sp?) for his runny nose and paracetamol. I've also been using the the saline nose drops and aspirator. after reading these posts I might stop the demezin during the day. He has had a high temp today and a couple of huge sprews:barf:

my 9mth old had a cold and then cut her first tooth a week later and has had a runny nose ever since. Its been 2 weeks.

I have been using demazin also of a morning and then a dose at night with baby neurofen at night too.

I think it is doing nothing to the runny nose situation though so maybe its having the opposite effect too.

I am constantly trying to wipe her runny nose all day so I guess if I stop the demazin it prob won't make any difference.

ahhhhhhhhhhh what to do what to do.

i have always been advised by my doctor that if the demazin, dimetapp isn't working after 4 days to stop giving it as if it isnt clearing it up then it is not working so pointless giving it to them, and i have found on these occasions that when you do actually stop it will clear itself up within about 2 days

I've got a question about the saline drops. How the hell are you supposed to make your baby lay down with the nose drops in for a couple of minutes if they are fighting you every step of the way, crying and screaming making the situation even more worse? I've been trying desperately to get my 5 month old to work with me on these drops without success. And she's so strong I'm sure it would take 3 people to hold her still. It just stresses me out. Any tips would be appreciated

I can sort of hold DD in the crook of my arm (sort of like bf and wrestling combined!) and quickly get the drops up the nose, but it's an exhausting experience!
