Hi Mummies,

Is anyone still nursing/patting/rocking their babies to sleep?

I have found lately that it's getting harder and harder to put my heavy weight (nearly 9.5kgs) 8 month old son to sleep.

He thrusts himself around like crazy. :crying:

Has anyone contemplated trying other methods of settling their babies??

I wish I could help. I am control comforting at the moment and am in every 2 minutes patting and stroking DD's face. She takes at least 30 mins to go to sleep and cries a lot. Once she is asleep she is fine - but it is getting her to sleep that is the problem!!!!

I don't want to rock to sleep anymore so am using that as an absolute last resort.

My 8 month old is just over 11kg  and it was killing my back trying to rock him to sleep plus while he was at daycare they couldnt nurse him to sleep either as he was getting way too heavy for them. So we decided on controlled comforting together and havent looked back!

Its hard work at first. Somedays Jacob will go down in about 2 minutes but other days it takes up to 15minutes. But he knows that when he is put into that cot its time for sleep.
If he gets really upset i pick him up and give him a cuddle and just put him back down again.

I was bf'ing or rocking Annalise to sleep until about 2 weeks ago, she just decided she could do it on her own. Sometimes she still needs to be cuddle or whatever, but that's fine with me. Maybe he just needs a bit more time with you before he decides he can do it on his own. Good luck!

I was like this too... When I fell pregnant it was just to hard to do it, so we transitioned to just sitting on the lounge together, and cuddling off to sleep, then she got to a point where she didn't want to be touched so much, but still wanted to be close, and now I just lay down beside her and she goes off to sleep after a breastfeed. It naturally fell into that I guess :) Alternate settling techniques don't have to mean that you leave them by themselves.

I am not quite in the apr-jun (august) but I here you. Sometimes I just wish I could BF and put her down and she would go to sleep so I could do some things but no :D

I don't feel comfortable leaving her to cry so I just suppose I have to put up with it :D

Thanks so much for your replies.

I tried something different today - I've cut out one of his naps. My theory is that by the time it comes to his sleep time, he'll be too tired to kick up a fuss. Haha

It just took me 4-5 minutes to put him down. Perhaps thats my answer, maybe he wasn't tired enough.

Shouldn't they only be having a morning nap and an afternoon nap now??

I was having a lot of trouble getting DD to sleep without rocking and ended up going to Tresillian at Willoughby for a weeks stay at their family help centre. They are great with helping stop the rocking to sleep cycle.
DD was 5mths when we went there a month ago now and i can now put her in the cot and she rolls on her side (thats how she sleeps these days cause she can roll and crawl) and i tuck her in with the sheet and give her a half dozen pats on bottom which i think is more for me than her these days.

The first couple of weeks doing it were hard but i think after i'd been doing it for a week or two it became a habit for the both of us.

Annalise wakes up around 6.30am.

She has a nap at around 9am.

She wakes up from that nap about 10.30am.

Her next nap is at 2pm and she sleeps til 4pm.

She then goes to bed again at 7pm.

yes, it is driving me nuts, because she wakes up every couple of hours most nights. her day sleeps are also erratic and not to be relied apon. :hair:
