View Full Version : Move up to step 2 for Formula
Hi everyone,
My DS is 6 months today :crying:. But anyways he has been bottledfed since 2 1/2 months.. Now that he is 6 months the can said to go up to step 2, BTW we use s26 Alpha Pro. But i'm a bit un-sure of what to do now, do I just stop Step 1 cold turkey? Or should I slowly introduce step 2?

With both my girls - who were on the same formula as your bubs. I have just finished the can of step 1 and then gone straight onto step 2 with no problems. The 2 types are not that different so shouldn't upset bub if you just swap cold turkey.
If you want to try and introduce it slowly maybe use it on cereal for a couple of days rather than the old formula or water (whichever you use).
Thanks for that schmell! I'm just waiting to finish the can of Step One, and we can start on the BIG boy one! Tear tear :crying: :crying:

I now it is such a milestone of growth :crying:
My little baby got her first tooth today (9.5 months mind you) but it won't be long and she'll have a whole mouth full - it goes too fast!!
I started Lucas 2 weeks ago on a follow on formula but found he has started waking again during the night....i realised that just because he is 6 months doesn't mean he HAS to step up...he is not eating alot of solids so therefore these follow on formulas are not as filling due to babies being on solids by this age.....so we went back to birth formula today and now I won't go up again until he is eating more solids....hope this makes sense! J

There's no need to switch to a stage 2 formula. I was told that by several child health nurses and agree with it. There are some extra goodies in the stage 2, but bub will be getting a lot of that with his new solids anyways. I didn't put Chloe onto a stage 2 until she was well over a year old and started eatting less.
This all makes sense to me........we switched to step 2 and the very same night Ava became unsettled.
I was told it was necessary but might rethink things now.
I believe the difference is step 1 is whey based and step 2 is curds based. Initially we had some constipation but since that day we have yet to have a full nights sleep.
Do you think it would be OK to switch back to Step 1 or do we need to continue with step 2 now we have been on it for approx a month?
nope, just go back to the original.

There is no need to change if bubs is happy with what the formula your already using its only if they start say wanting more to drink or say every few hours which usually means a growth spurt or the likes then this may be when you need to change. My bubs didnt change until 7mths & i wasnt even going to then but he started wanting a bottle every 2hrs again so i waited a week to see what happened & it was continuing so we changed !
I advise changing it over slowly also as its a change so needs to be done slowly so just add a bottle of the new formula to your routine then when there has been no problems for a few days add another & so on. Much better on little tummies !
Good luck i hope everything sorts itself out whichever way you go
Sorry to have hijacked this thread but thanks for the advice.
I am going to buy some more step 1 today and see if it makes a difference.
Well I tried/trying step 2 and last night I was up EVERY HOUR to DS! So i'm going to move him back to step 1, for his sake and mine too! I've found that being on this new formula he isn't drinking very much and he is now doing two bowel movements a day (TMI), the bowel movements aren't a problem its just he was only doing one a day before - So maybe step 2 is upsetting his stomach?
We have just gone back to step 1 too........
:fingerscrossed: fingers crossed everything settles back down again!

Well, i've had Charlee back on step 1 again since yesterday arvo, and she slept through pretty much! She's slept well at all her naps today as well, so we'll see how she goes tonight.

Glad to hear all is going well girls
If it aint broke dont fix it as they say LOL.
That being said you may find they need the step up like my bubs did but just later but there is no set time nor is there a reason to step up unless you think its whats needed.

It could be upsetting his tummy if you have gone cold turkey & i forgot to say also the best way to introduce the one bottle at a time is the morning that way if there is any reaction or problem you will see it & either stop or take bubs to the hospital.
You also have to understand there will always be a 2wk period where bubs will be unsettled due to formula change over it isnt necessarily bad its just them getting used to it all.
I also found bubs went through this stage of not drinking much but he does that every so often now since the 6mth age its pretty normal. He went from dropping down to 3 bottle around the 8mth age to having 4 bottles a month or so later till now where im trying to get him to cut back. My bubs also varies with his poo somedays he only does one then others he does 4  Its always different & changing especially now they are on solids so him pooing more isnt a bad thing unless he has the runs which is totally different.
Anyways good luck :)
Thanks for all your wonderful advice girls! I gave DS a bottle of Step 1 last night and he slept ALL night! :smiliedance: :smiliedance:
So I will go back to Step 1, and sllllllllowlllly introduce Step 2 and we will see how we go from there! It felt so good to get a decents night sleep though!

I can't actually remember what age M was when we went to step two (shame) - but I do remember she had terrible problems with constipation at first

I have heard this also by several people, including the ever resourcful book 'Baby Love'. I think they've got slightly extra iron in the step 2, which they'll get in food anyway.
