I haven't actually had my baby yet, but I've researched this fairly thoroughly and the cord blood will be stored (I'm due in April, and have already paid and made all of the arrangements).
1. roughly how much cord blood is taken?
The average amount taken is between 60ml and 150ml. If the baby is premature or there is a medical reason that the blood can't be taken, most companies will give you your money back and charge you the cost of the kit, which is usually around $500. If it is an emergency c-section, the doctor may not take the cord blood as their priority is you and the baby. If you want to delay clamping the cord, speak to the different companies. Some say it's ok, and others tell you they won't get enough.
2. for personal use, has anyone stored their babys cord blood privately?
This baby's blood will be stored with a private company, and can only be used by my baby, or a family member. As the parent/guardian, decisions regarding the blood are made by me until the baby turns 18 years old, at which time the blood belongs to him.
3. who are a great company to go with and that you trust?
I'm going with Stem Life. I met the directors and they have been quite helpful with all of my queries.
Good luck with everything.

I donated my girls cord blood to the public cord blood bank at the Mater.
The cord blood team take the placenta and hang it in a special "sling" type thingy and let gravity do the work, collecting the blood in similar contraption to adult blood donation. The amount of blood collected varies, but like Hazellew said it's usually between 60-150ml is collected.
Becky's placenta didn't have much left in it, so instead her donation will be used for research into cures for childhood cancers. When you donate cord blood publicly, if there isn't enough for a blood donation, then you can choose to donate it to medical research - but you don't have to.

I paid just under $3000. I think most companies charge about the same.

i had dd2's stored with biocell - it cost around$3000 but my BIL paid for it as we are hoping it can be used to help my nephew who has cystic fibrosis - the whole process is fairly simple (i had mine done with my csection) & have found biocell to be great
