View Full Version : going outw ith bottles
i am new to bottle feeding. how do you go out with bottles? already made up? Take water out and have powder in a little container with u? i have no idea.
Bottles with sterilised quite warm water in them and the Avent travel container - holds up to 3 serves of powder you can measure before you go.
Then when it is time to feed, open the little hatch and dump the powder into the water and shake.
They cost about $7 and there are lots of other brands too.
Formula should not be kept at room temp for more than an hour and in this hot weather even less so making it up fresh is the safest option.
Failsafe way is to fill the sterilized bottles with cool boiled water and cap them etc...
If you haven't already got one of the formula dispensers... do so... is a very handy item to have... It reduces spillage of powder and closed up from any nasties...
If you are at a shopping center the mother and baby rooms have microwaves or if not ask someone in the food courts etc to heat up the bottle... Heating in the microwave is safe as long as you shake the contents to even out the heat...
Add the formula powder after heating the water...
This is the safest way... Taking prepared bottles means bateria starts growing and once a bottle is made up it should be consumed within an hour....

I found the idea of going out with a bottle fed baby very daunting in the early days!
I do as the girls above do. Freshly steralised bottle filled with cooled boiled water and then warm the water up and add the powder. I was extremely hesitant to use microwaves in the early days, but it really is safe so long as you do just a bit at a time (until you are more confident) and make sure you shake - add the formula after heating the water.
I have both the old avent formula containers and the new ones, I really don't like the new ones (they have the blue lid) as the opening for the formula to come out is oval and is near impossible to get the formula into the bottles if you use the tall skinny bottles. You can get good ones from the cheap shops, also Sassy do a good one as do Tomme Tippe.
I find using bottles without needing those little stoppers/seals in them much easier. there are a few around now. The lid acts as the seal insted. No fiddling around then.
The formula in those containers like people said.
Even better than heating, which can be a pain, time consuming looking for a microwave etc and is a pain if it gets over heated as you can't use it for ages is just use room temp water insted. And it can be dangerous if its not tested properly etc.
My girls both only had room temp water, even in winter here. Its easy, we never had to heat it up, and even when a little cool in the cold months it never made a difference and its an old wives tail that it will give the baby a tummy ache too.
Making a bottle for us is a couple of second job, get out bottle, take of top, put in formular, put it back on, shake, give to baby da dah
Nuking a bottle is definately the way to go when out if possible.
The other alternatives we use are:
- In car bottle warmer (takes about 15-20 mins to warm 200mls though)
- Two thermos flasks, one with boiling, one with cold - pour in empty bottle at ratio to get desired temp (take a little practice though).

My Dd always had her bottles at room temp too. So it was just a matter of taking out the bottles, and using the formula dispenser when she needed her bottle, shake and it's ready to go. I love the nurse at the hospital that told me not to warm bottles, makes life so much easier.
At first when we went out we used to use a thermos filled with warm water. We did not have to worry about if we were going to be somewhere to be able to heat the bottle up......Now DS2 drinks his bottles at room temperature and all we have to do is put it right into his bottles. We also have the avent formula container, best thing that was ever invented for formula when you are out and about.
excellent advice. thank you

DD has been bottle fed since birth and it can be a little daunting heading out with bottles! In the early days I even forgot to take the bottles! Have you bought bottles yet? I can highly recommend Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles - I like them because you can buy little canisters that sit inside the bottle that you fill with pre-measured formula and you can leave the teat in as they don't leak (well they haven't yet). Similar idea to the Advent dispenser...only difference is the canister is inside the bottle. Quite expensive though. Either way....a formula dispenser of some sort is your best friend.
The first 3 months DD had warm bottles in steralised bottles (the TT steraliser is great too). I would either put warm boiled water in the bottle or ask the shop assistant to heat the bottle for me when I was eating at a cafe or restaurant (even at shopping centres) - this was never a problem. Most change rooms have microwaves as well (as some of the others mentioned). DD has her bottles at room temperature now.
So very simple....unscrew lid, pull out canister, tip in formula and shake.

Like some of the others have said I just use room temperature boiled water in the bottle so I don't have to heat it and just add the formula when you need to feed bubs. I find this the easiest otherwise you need to heat the bottle everywhere you go.
Me too... I take the water at room temp add the formula in the bottle and then feed. I like the pidgeon formula holder its a stack of 3 contaniers then when they dont need formula anymore you can use for solids
