we've got one, and every now and then it goes off, everytime I hear it beep my heart just about jumps out of my chest.

tonight its gone off twice, I stood there just after the second time to watch DD's breathing, and she was breathing quite shallow and pausing, which is what I think caused the alarm to go off, she must have stopped breathing for a few seconds longer then started again

its quite scary really, is it normal for babies to do this?

How terrifying for you hun, I bet you didnt sleep a wink after they went off :(

Does she have a blocked nose maybe? I have no idea sorry, I didn't have one.

Yes. We have one. The alarm has gone off a few times also and it's always in the middle of the night. My heart races too and I end up sleeping in her room when it happens. I'm not sure if she has actually stopped breathing or if there is a fault with the monitor. But I have noticed that when it does go off she is normally tucked right up one end of the cot so perhaps the sensor pad is not registering her breathing.

The other problem I have with the monitor is that sometimes it picks up our air-conditioning as movemement. ie if our air-con is on and I take DD out of the cot without turning the monitor off the monitor keeps flashing as though she is still in the cot.

We were given one for DS 7 years ago and I hated the movement part of it. I think we used it for a week and haven't used it since (for him or more recently for DD).

Personally I think it causes more stress than it relieves!

no she doesn't have a blocked nose or anything

after that second one last night It didn't go off again

I don't think its a fault cause I never reset the alarm just let it do its thing, if it was a fault it would just keep on doing it wouldn't it??????? I never changed her position in the cot either, so it couldn't have been that

Does she move around a lot? I have read that they can go off when they move more and more. She is a little wriggle worm :p

If it was faulty, like you said, it would keep going off I would think.

nah she's not a wriggle worm, well she wasn't last night anyways, i've got the monitor with the 2 sensor pads, so it doesn't really matter what part of the mattress she's on, it still registers all movement

the nights that she wriggles heaps and ends up with her legs between the bars, the alarm never goes off

ours has gone off heaps- and he has been breathing everytime weve gone in- We think its because hes moved off the sensor pads. I dont know what to tell you- you can adjust the sensitivity of the sensors. We continued to use it because it made us feel better anyway!

hey I know exactly how you feel- in the 4 months that we have had the monitor (and baby) it has gone off on a number of occasions. but I think it is when Victoria is in a really deep sleep. Also make sure that your baby is under the sensor pad. It has gone off when dh is away for work which is really bad as i get into a tizz.

but i read a very good article somewhere - children always give us something to worry about.

yip ive got 2 sensor pads so she's always on one, even if she makes her way up to the top of the cot , I think it was the shallow breathing last night and the pausing between between breaths is what set it off, will jsut have to keep a eye on her me thinks

We used one for about 12 months and it would only go off when we took Layla out of the cot and forgot to turn the thing off!

We have one also. We got it when DS was 8 months so he was all over the cot by then. Ours luckily has never gone off while he is in there...........only when we forget to turn it off when we pick him up.

I watched the dvd that came with it and it does say that if the baby stops breathing or breathes less than 14 times per minute ( I think thats the number, haven't watched it for 6 months) the alarm will sound so it may have been your baby was breathing slow?

I am sorry I don't have any concrete answers but happy to hear she was ok when you checked on her.

yeah I think thats whats going on, it went off twice last night, about a hour apart, i've watched her in her sleep and she tends to pause with her breathing when she's in a deep sleep, and breathes real shallow

I really dont wanna freak you out, that is definately not my intention, but I would get a referal to a paed and have her looked at for sleep apnoea(sp)I have a friend thats daughter had large tonsils for her age and they were actually blocking her throat and when she got tested she actually stopped breathing 64 times in one night.
I also have one of these monitors and it has never gone off with him in the cot. Just when we forget to turn the thing off. And he is nearly 20 months and does back flips in the cot! The sensors are towards the middle and some nights he will be laying up the side of the cot. And it will still not go off.

Well, you wouldn't believe this but for the first time today our alarm went off during the day.

I ran in to check on DD and it really did look like she wasn't breathing. I shook her shoulder to wake her and she didn't wake. I did it again and after about 10 seconds she woke and then went back to sleep. She was breathing very very slowly and was tucked up at the top end of the cot.

I'm still not sure if the alarm is going off for good reason or whether it is just not picking up her slow breathing when she is at the top end of the cot. Not sure what to do.

She's already under a paed cause she was premmie and has a heart murmer, we're due to see the paed again this comming monday

alanasmum how scary, it could've been the combination of her slowly breathing and being at the top of the cot, do you have the one with the 2 sensor pads or just the one?

We just have the one sensor pad. I've moved it towards the top end of the cot because she always sleeps up there. Hopefully it won't go off again. I'm starting to think these monitors are more trouble than what they are worth.

if you've only got the one sensor probably was a mixture of it not registering the movement and her breathing shallow

thats why i've got the one with the 2 sensor pads, to make sure the whole mattress is covered

I'd get your bub checked out, just to be on the safe side. It could also be that yoru monitor needs adjusting.

We have one and it gives me peace of mind. Mine has gone off once - not sure why. I guess DD might have been breathing slowly.
