Help!! DH wants a new york style cheesecake for his birthday and all my recipe books are Canadian and use graham crackers to make a crumb crust. I can't seem to find them in any shops. Any ex-pats out there know a good substitute, or anybody have a good crumb crust recipe to share?

My Joy of Cooking suggests ginger snaps, but I think that may be too strong in flavor

PS - it's for a 10 inch springform pan. Thanks!

I usually use Marie biscuits.

The best recipe I have has a pinch of cinnamon together with the crumbs and butter.

Arrowroot or wheatmeal biscuits would be fine too.

Happy cheesecake making.

Thanks!

Aardvark, the recipe I'm looking at uses cardomon in the crust. Not sure how it will go!

Hey Martha:) - I just noticed that you are one of the lucky people to live in Melbourne near the one and only USA Foods Store in the whole of Aus - LUCKY THING!!.

They sell Honey Graham Crackers 14oz for $9.99 have you been there at all? They have all the American Foods and are fantastic. They will also post to you if you want. Thought you might be interested if you want that true yankee flavour:)

I use Granita biccies for a normal crust or choc ripple cookies for a chocolate crust.

Both Arnott's products.

Good luck!

I use Scotch Finger biscuits for cheesecake crusts. I crush them up and add melted butter to hold them together. Just take the weight of the biscuits mentioned in the recipe and choose what you fancy really :)

McVities Digestive biscuits (avail in coles) with a little additional brown sugar and a little dessicated coconut makes a fab cheesecake base, I think (with melted butter of course).

I use ginger snaps and it works great, but you could mix ginger snaps and a lighter biscuit for a good result too.

I'm hungry now...... but no cheesecake for this preggo girl. Damn. One of the things I'd rather not have to give up whilst pregnant.

Thanks everyone :) DH came home with 5 packages of ginger snaps yesterday, way way too many lol. I had thought of some of the suggestions you've all given but wasn't sure of how the texture would turn out, I was thinking digestives would be too soft and mushy.

Rik, thanks for the tip of the USA Foods Store, I had forgotten that was here. Their bikkies look a bit expensive! But I may pop in for some other goodies that we've been missing :yelclap:

Some of my fave cheesecake recipes suggest using a mix of milk arrowroot and ginger biscuits, adding a little lemon/orange juice to get the consistency right, then put cling film on it and let it set in the fridge before adding the cheesecake filling. Good luck........yum!

I settled on a 50/50 mix of Marie biscuits and ginger nut biscuits, with brown sugar and butter. :) I won't get to taste the result so hope it is ok!

That sounds lovely.
Have you tried the Nigella Lawson vanilla cheesecake recipe? It is really delicious, I made so many of them when I was pregnant. I was eating cheesecake morning noon and night. Anyway, here is a link to the recipe just in case anyone is interested.

Definitely mcvities digestives!! Dont worry, they arent mushy at all, they harden because of the chilled butter and sugar - really nice!
Also, oreos make a great base for cheesecakes!
