Did anyone see the segment on sunrise last week about a link between cancer (I think it was) and having your period all the time??
They mentioned that it could be of advantage not to regularly have a period as we have so many in a lifetime...sorry details are shady on the whole topic but wanted to get peoples thoughts....I have just had my 2nd bub and thinking about getting the implant that they talked about which would stop your period??

I didn't see that but know that one of the factors that contributes to brittle bones and osteoparosis is a lack of calcium and that regular ovulation and menstruation has something to do with regulating our calcium levels....so do a lot of research before rushing into that decision.

here is a link to the fact sheet about the story

- I personally skip the sugar pills every second month (when using the normal pill - useless when using the minipill  ) - so I only have a period every second month ... who knew that we have approx 450 periods... eww... WAY too many...

It is obviously meant to be, otherwise why would we ovulate and menstruate so regularly?

K.M 12 words, you are really starting to open up.

Have to agree with K.M on this one. Sometimes people get cancer no matter what.

the microwave.. the tv... the computer monitor... the exhaust from cars ... from over cooked red meat ... anything cooked on a BBQ... from periods... from teflon... etc etc etc etc all cancer giving...

with the amount of info out there - we should all be well and truly dead by now ..

I guess that with modern contraceptives we have a lot more periods than we're meant too. Once upon a time we would have been constantly pregnant or breastfeeding IYKWIM??

Hey Veve
You forgot the major one, mobile phones!!
Just out of curiosity (sorry if TMI and off topic), when I worked in the national bone and soft tumour cancer unit in the UK a few years ago, they were investigating the link between wearing mobiles (on your belt, or in your pocket) and sacral cancers. We had a very high number of young people come through with this type of soft tissue cancer, and many were police officers (who carry those walkie talkie things on their belts). Its devastating, as suffers lose all bladder, bowel and sexual function and many die.
Although its still being researched, and I'm not aware of any conclusive results, the specialists (with over 20yrs exp) always advised anyone they knew against wearing mobiles

I read something ages ago on this and they reckon that in the olden days women never had periods because they would just get pregnant one after the other BUT look at all the women that died in childbirth???? See you cant win no matter what! lol.

They were saying on Sunrise that we r now starting our periods younger - having children later and not breastfeeding for as long as we use to.. All adds up to more periods over your life time.

THis is one subject I will be chatting to my GP about as I'd love to get rid of my mnthly... However haven't had one for 15 months due to breastfeeding and could be happier:D

Has anyone heard of a contraceptive pill you can get overseas, but not in Australia yet, it's called SEASONALE, you only have one period per season, ie 4 per year. If you take the normal pill and skip the sugar pills, it works the same way though.

Seasonale was introduced for women's convenience. It is said to be safe as women are supposedly having too many periods now, because we reach puberty younger, start having children older, have less children and breastfeed for shorter time. Also, life expectancy is longer so some would say we reach menopause older, therefore having more than double the amount of periods we were designed to anyway.

It sounds good to me, hope it passes all the necessary testing and is introduced in Australia.

You know the funny thing is women with PCOS have a higher risk of cancer due to the fact their lining isn't shed often enough so where does that fit in? I for 1 am lucky to have AF once a year and that just is not fun! Fair enough if it's stopped by the pill, but when your TTC or just don't know if your pg or just havn't gotten AF it's no fun! Everone says, oh your so lucky, fine, let it happen to them :banghead:
