with dd i had the traditional cane bassinette, she was in it maybe 12 weeks as she out grew it. with ds i bought a beautiful and expensive timber cradle little bigger than a bassinette as he was a big baby and he rolled early he also was lucky to be in it maybe 10 or 11 weeks. ds also had reflux so we had a lot of sheet sets and blankets for cradle. when he was done with it i can just remember thinking what an incredible waste of $, maybe had he been a smaller baby and not grown so quickly it would of been worth it. ive known some people to get 4 to 6 months out of them. anyway ive since sold all my baby gear so now im getting it all again and im tempted to just have a cot and skip the whole cradle/bassinette part as my kids grow too quick anyways.what does everyone else think is a cot just too big for a newborn? what is everyone else doing?

My DS went straight into the cot. No problems.
For this one, my SIL has found me a cane bassinette - I just have to get a mattress for it. This one will be in the bassinette as long as possible in our room because DS is still in his cot. I was thinking that once this one has grown out of the bassinette I could have DS in a bed already. :fingerscrossed:
Once this one goes into a cot he/she will be sharing a room with DS. Oh dear I dont know how thats going to go because DS is such a light sleeper! Eeeek!

I was very luck to have inherited a really good cot and change table about a year ago. My parents bought a furnished house complete with nursery so I got it all!
The cot is quite large so we will most probably get a snuggle bed (like a small mattress with sides) to sit inside the cot and bub can go straight into that. I can't wait to go out and start BUYING these things. We are most probably moving insterstate though as soon as the house sells so part of me doesn't want to add to the massive amount of removalist costs we will have this time around.
I have also been told by many people to start buying nappies when they are on special too. This sounds like a great idea but I just can't start doing that either. :-(

For DS we had a little matress that had handles on it, kind of like a travel bed. It was great because i could carry him from room to room when he was asleep. he was in it for about 2 months.
We'll probably use it for this one too, for a little while.
We are considering buying DS a toddler bed, so that the next one can go straight to the cot when ready...
Hmm decisions, decisions.
we will be re using the snuggle bed in the cot. These are great!

Unfortunately I think we'll have to buy a basssinette for this baby - we put Claire straight into a cot when she was born, and I was planning on doing the same with this bubba - but we can't get Claire out of the bloody cot! She just wont' sleep in her bed :(
So probably a bassinette in our room for a bit, before the cot....

supermumof2 - google it or go to ebay and search for "Snuggle bed" and you will see - it's like a mattress with sides. Looks like it would be great for taking with you or carrying baby from room to room. Check them out. I'd never heard of them before but saw one in a catalog and it seemed like a great idea for someone who already has a cot and doesn't want to spend too much. They range between $80 and $100 from what I've seen.

supermum - noosa has it right. It is a mattress with sides which provides bubs with the "feel" of a smaller bed (apparently more comforting for them after they come out of the womb than a big bed) and it stops them for rolling around too much. Also great for taking to friend's places instead of lugging around a heavy portacot (why do they call them "porta" when they are so not!!!!)

I'll be buying a bassinette so we can have the baby in our room.
DD is still using the cot that we converted to a toddler bed,but she'll be out of it by the time bub will need it.:)

birthingbeauty - LOVE Ebay!!! I've found a great maternity clothing place on Ebay and I am always checking out their stuff. I've bought some things too - very nice. As long as you know what you're after, you can always find a bargain on Ebay!

OK go to Ebay and the seller is called "Angel Maternity". Their sizing seemed spot on to me. I measured myself properly and got the right size. It's quite risky buying clothing on the internet but their sizing seemed good.

Well I am very lucky with this. My sister had a baby last January and my baby is due this June. So I bought a bassinett from baby's galore for $100.00 on sale and it is absolutely beautiful, so my sister's baby will be out of the cot by the time by baby is out of the bassinett.

We are borrowing a bassinette from my auntie. So we are lucky. Bubs will go in the cradle in our room. I feel this will be the best transition for us. Means when bubs wakes up I can grab him/her and sit in bed to feed and pop back in cradle. I know this sounds easier than it will actually be. Also bubs might need a change so out of the bedroom we go. And if DH is getting too tired from all the wake ups, then I will feed in the family room. But all this will be a learning curve and we will work out what is best for us.
Anyone else had a thought about what DH/P will do when you get up to feed. Obviously this will differ if we are breastfeeding or formula feeding. My thoughts are: When I am breastfeeding, he can sleep. There is no point in both of us being tired. Unless I am having a bad night, then he might get up and change bubs or make me a tea or milo. But if he is well slept during thr night then it makes looking after bubs during day, when I am sleeping, his job.
But hey I am a first time mum so I am really playing it by ear. Any advice would be great.

Bree27 - I like to think that I will be like you and if I am able to breastfeed, then I will obviously be the one waking up in the middle of the night but that should earn me some nap time during the days if possible. Then again I know nothing being a first time mum but I do however know enough to say I can plan all I like but will never really know what it's like or even be able to imagine it until the time is here!
I had a friend suggest over the weekend that sicne my cot that I will be using has sides that drop but can also be like a toddler bed or have only one side on, I can have it set up right up against our bed. So that one side is off but it's the same height as our bed so that I can slide bubs back in after a feed and slide him/her over when he/she wakes up. It would be right up against my side of the bed so much easier. I might see if that will work. Bubs won't fall out as he/she (can't wait to find out what the sex is so I don't have to keep typing "he/she"!) will be in a snuggle bed. Sounds like a plan!
I have had a few offers of loans of bassinettes but I'm not sure I'll bother. If the cot fits beside my bed
I'll probably do similar to NMTB, or co- sleep.
Just looked at snuggle beds online. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using one seeing as they have the soft sides/surrounds. Seems to me they may pose the same danger as bumpers, i.e. something soft that the baby could end up against with it's face buried in.
I'm going to be moving rooms to the current "sparerooms" As they are conjoined it means even if bubs cot doesn't fit beside me, it will only be a few meters away. Have to do some renos down the track though to separate the rooms as down the track, having to walk through a youngsters room to get to my own, may be an issue.
Being single I don't have to worry about waking anyone (except keeping that way myself) when feeding:D
