View Full Version : Gender Swapping Names

I seem to have this horrid fascination with girls getting what were once boy names. My two favourite boy names have been ruined that way. I was wondering if other people have had this problem, or are on the other side of the fence about it? What boy names have become girly to you? And would you consider naming a girl one of those names? Would you name a boy?

The ones that really annoy me are Cameron (in it's infinite spellings) and Logan. And I actually went to school with a girl (she'd be about 20 now) named Michael. And while she hated it, her mother would get in your face about how Michael "was originally a girl's name" and treat you like you're stupid for not knowing that. And that started my hatred for girls with "boy" names.

Anyways, jsut wanted to see what other people thought about it.

I have to agree with you. Don't like the gender swapping names thing.
Leslie/Lesley - Peta/Peter - Cody/Cody - Kim/Kym - Alex/Alex - Brodie/Brodie.

I know there are a couple of bubhubbers who's childrens are named the above so please do not take offence - this is my opinion only.

Eloise's middle name is Cameron

I'm so not offended though LOL - we named her after her father's middle name!

My daughter is Courtney and she was named after her grandfather, you don't see many male Courtneys though, so I guess it's expected to be feminine.

We were thinking of naming this baby Charlie/Charli as it's easier to only think of one name when we don't know the sex yet.

I do agree with you as far as Cameron and Logan are concerned - IMO way to masculine for a girl.

I can relate to this. My DS is Caelan. People either call him Caleb, or think he is a girl and call him Caitlin  Tho with his curls I can see why they think he's a girl sometimes.

I once worked with a lady named Mitch.

I don't mind, times are changing!!!!

At the start I liked kobe/coby for a girl but have changed my mind since
We know a girl called Cobey, and a little boy called Kobey! :) And you know what... the name suits them both so much!

Morgan

Shannon

Jordan

Tyler

although I like Shannon for either and I know boys and girls called Tyler and it sounds masculine on a boy and feminine on a girl. If its truly unisex its okay, but if it becomes more girly and you have a boy called it then it would be annoying I think. Its been happening since time began, some old ones are

Hilary
Leslie
Marion

The americans seem to do it alot. Cameron, Blair, Ashley, Reece

DSS name is Alex (alexander) but I much prefer Alex as a girls name... especially Alexis and Alexia...

so im going a little against here because there are some names I like a lot for swapping around... and others I cant stand!

Lee/Leigh is one I don't like but its so common for both sexes

Ashley i like for a girl but not for a boy

Jordan I like for boys not girls

Kim I only like for girls!

Kerry only for girls

i hope there is no one out there by this name.. but what puzzles me is why some blokes names are stacy

i have heard a couple, (dont know them personally) but always thought that was a really girly name.

I hope i didnt offend anyone!! but always wondered why someone would do that.

my little girl is Elliot!!! and it really suits her. i do get some strange looks when i say her names elliot but i luv it! plus it was the only name hubby & i could agree on (he hated really 'girly' names.)
she gets elli and elle anyway!!
i like cameron and bailey too for a girl.

My middle name ie Leslie, I personally hate it but  what can you do!!!

A friend of mine is called Pieta, (pronounced Peter) and she hated it, I also went to school with a girl called Erin and my brother is called Aaron! I know 2 girls I did uni with who were called logan, as well as a little girl at a recent naming day ceremony we went to, I have seen quite a few little girls with that name, and quite a few little boys called Kim!!!!! My new sister in law (FIL's step daughter) is called Carman.

I'm going with definate names for my kids, Thomas and Alan are unlikely to be mistaken for girl's names!!!

Then again you know the old saying;

It was only after our DD was born that we discovered her name, Romilly can be either a girls or boys name.

www.romilly.plus.com/ is a website by a man called Romilly and he has info about all the places, people etc that share the name, very interesting!

I personally like gender swapping names, especially girls having usually male names.

My husband and I are expecting our first and have no trouble deciding on boys names, but all of the names we like for girls are unisex or masculine names.

I guess I'm just lucky that my hubby feels the same way I do. :cloud9:

If the bub is a girl she'll be an Elliot :)

I don't like unisex names, or names that end up unisex after a while.

Some of them don't sound feminine at all... like... Emerson for a girl? It sounds like the last name of an old man... not that of a cute little girl.

I dunno, I don't like it at all.

Yup I'm not a fan of gender swapping names either!!

My fave name for a boy is Logan and that's what I'll prob call my baby (if a boy).. I think that the name sounds way too masculine and harsh for a girl!

I Don't really like names like Jamie, Ashley and Kimberly on Guys either (traditionally female names) for similar reasons, too feminine..

But I guess its personal preference and sometimes ppl call their child by the name traditionally used for the opp sex becoz it has meaning and is sentimental for them (like was the name of their father or a friend that passed away etc).

Definitely some names that have crossed from boys to girls cannot go back, particularly the soft feminine names....Could you see a tattooed up biker in a bar fight with one of these soft feminine unisex names??? My DHs middle name is Courtney and its SO not him LOL

My DDs name is still predominantly male but the first time I saw her name and the place I got it from was a woman and so far she has been the first and last female(besides DD) that i have seen with this name all the others have been boys. To me it has no life on a boy but a girl gives it such character...Odd hey? Its a strong name but girls can carry strong names much better than boys can carry feminine names IMO

I can definitely see why masculine names on girls upsets some people! It would annoy me to have named my son only to have the name be used on girls and start looking feminine.

Having said that, I might end of up being a perpetrator! We are thinking of naming our September bub Morgan if it is a girl. :o I see the problem with doing it, but neither DH or I like many of the 'girly' names! (If it's a boy he will be Mason, which so far hasn't been used on girls I don't think. I'm sure it's only a matter of time...)

:iagree: There seems to be almost no-stopping what some people will name their little girls. Names which I would never have thought could ever be feminine are being used on daughter. Seems that no boys names are sacred any more! It's quite scarey...

I have a friend who can't stand female versions of male names like Paul/Paula, Claude/Claudia, Joseph/Josephine, Simon/Simone etc

And these have been around for ages - certainly Julius/Julia have been used since Roman times.

I suppose it is a good thing that we have different tastes and that names evolve and the fashion keeps changing. Do sociologists study this kind of thing and make conclusions about the society??

I blame soap operas for changing genders!:D

Shannon as someone said. I know a family where a daughter married a Shannon and a year later her boy cousin married a girl called Shannon!

A lot of names seem to have crossed the gender line over the years.

I know some Ainsleys (girls) but there is an Ainsley character in some TV show..it's an old one and darn, I can't recall it now..but a very old fashioned show.

Often it is our perception of what gender a name is.

Having an Erin, I got 'it's a boy's name'...no that is Aaron but in the bible it is pronounced as 'erin' due to the double a.

I don't like gender swapping names at all, it annoys me.

There seems to be an unwriten rule that people can call their girls, boys names and feminise them but not the other way around.

I Don't really like names like Jamie, Ashley and Kimberly on Guys either (traditionally female names) for similar reasons, too feminine...

Ashley and Kimberly were used mainly on boys until the 70s and Jamie is a nickname for James so I guess they are actually traditionally male names but I agree they are very feminine and much prefer them for a girl.

Personally I think Darcy is way more suited to a girl than a boy, but if you don't want people asking what Darcy's gender is then use a gender-specific name like Noah or Mary.

And its a name thats been around for hundreds of years so dunno if you can include it in the modern trend for gender swapping. My parents named me cause its a name thats come down through many generations of european (true europe) ladies of our family so like it cause it has history and culture. Its not just someone saw it on telly and thought they would use it. Although...ancient times people had weird fads too so I guess it can happen lol

I LOVE unisex names. I've got two girls: Baylee and Kaiden.
I didn't know that Kaiden was a boys name when I had her, we thought we'd made up her name . She gets Kaidy, which is very feminine, and I wouldnt' dream of calling a boy Kaiden (IMO). Baylee I think is a true unisex name - you see equal amounts of boys and girls, but I think a lot has to do with the spelling. We had girly names picked out for them as well (Sienna etc) but it just didn't suit them
I have only seen one other Baylee with the same spellign thats a boy (on BH), but all the others have been girls (about 5 in 4 years).
I am also 25 weeks preggers with daughter number 3, and we are thinking of unisex names for her also. We figure that a "girly" name won't go with the others . We're thinking of Camryn, Ashtyn or Piper (is a boys name!).
We balance it out with girly middle names; Baylee Jorja, Kaiden Michaela and Piper Millie (?).
Each to their own.
I just don't understand when people name their children names that are so totally difficult to spell/pronounce/say (eg. shaniqua etc). Again, that's just my opinion. They don't seem to be around as much any more - seemed to be early 2000's those ones.

Lol. Funny because what came to mind for me was Friends:

Ross and Rachel deciding on names:

Rachel: James.
Ross: Yeah that's good.
Rachel: but only for a girl...

I'm not a fan of name sharing in many cases because it'll inevitably swing from one gender to the other, and cause grief for the named people like it always does to my friend Ashley (boy!)

I love unisex names, so don't have a problem whatsoever with the current trend of giving girls more masculine names. I myself am not hugely into girly girl names.

I don't see the big deal really - isn't it along similar lines of some topics a while back about dressing boys in pink or boys playing with dolls/girls with cars? Kids are going to be themselves regardless of their names, and by a boy having a perceived feminine name isn't going to change who he is.

BTW - I am a fan of them (in case you can't tell by my username) my DD is called Charli. My son is Nicholas, but always gets called Nick or Nicky - so could be thought of to be gender neutral as well (Nicole). :D

3 of my 5 kids have unisex names, they were not chosen because they were good for both genders, but mearly cause we loved the name.
I picked Hunter for my son (bub2),there were not many around 5 years ago, and this lady at the shops told me her girl was hunter after he was born.
Bub3 name was chosen by my hubby and i had issues with it cause i thought it was more a boys name, i agreed to have it if i could change the spelling, her name is Bailea (bailey), i thought it looks more girly on paper, but still people spell it differently all the time, with y or e.
My bub4 is Emmerson and she just suits her name, she is so cute and has the biggest smile ever, my hubby worked with a man in his 30s called Emerson. After we named her we met two other Emmersons both little girls about 4 yrs old.

I think its becoming more of a trend to use unisex names. I have already picked bub6 name if i have a girl and it turns out to be a unisex name to, was bummed when i found out, but i loved the name, just have to convince hubby lol.

The name Darcy has been killed for me actually. I have always thought of it as a boys name and now everywhere I look there are Darcies, Darcys, D'Arcys, D'Arcies. And now I couldn't name a little boy Darcy because of that. Also there's a little girl called Darcy on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" so hopefully I'll marry someone with a surname Darcy 'cause that's the only way any of my kids will get that name.

I really feel for the parents of sons who named their child what they thought was a good solid name at the time, only to have the name 'stolen' by the girls down the track.

There's plenty of beautiful feminine girls names out there...leave some boys names for the boys...pretty please! :)
