just a question for those with prem babies. im just wondering how people always talking corrected age. when does that stop? does it depend how prem ur bub was born and how he/she is developing. my sis has a prem baby and she doesnt know
My bubs specialists say it stops at 12mths (she is now 22mths) however I still get asked by various doctors what her corrected age is?? So who knows but officially it is apparently 12 mths.
Hi there,
There are differing views as to when this will stop.
It actually depends how premmie the child was. The more premmie the more time they need to catch up.
I hope this helps.
From experience people stopped asking once the 'major milestones' were all reached. Once the twins were walking and talking people stopped asking for 'corrected age'

I have been told by many doctors once they reach 2 years old all "correcting" stops.. Who knows because my son is 21 months (19 corrected) and isn't walking.. I will probably keep using it until he goes to school!
mine was 6 weeks and is meeting all the milestones of a non premmie so not sure.

I was told 12 months if he had caught up with his milestones - which he did.

As soon as they have caught up to all their milestones.

I still use corrected age and my daughter is nearly 2. Im sick of people saying "oh but shes so small for a 2 year old" I will prolly use it for another year or so.

Hi, my DS was a 24 weeker and turns 5 in a few weeks. He is due to start prep in the same week!! Scary to think how fast those 5 years have gone! Anyway, I still correct his age so in my head he doesnt turn 5 until May...! I was also recently informed by a principal at a local school that a conference she went to on premmie babies and their education showed that those born extremely early (like my son) should have their age corrected after they start school and possibly up until teenage years. I am not saying that my son is terribly delayed or anything, but I do feel that his social abilities and things may be that 4 more months behind other kiddies his age, hope that makes sense! Anyway just my 2 cents worth!
cheers Lisa

Same as my brother, except he is 10. He is a little behind in learning/school work compared to his class mates, but considering how prem he was, he is doing fine.

i have been told to correct for everything untill 2 yrs old
my boy should now be almost 13mths but is acutally almost 15mths, (god i still have to sit here and think about it! lol - i really do hate that question - how old is he??)
but he is well ahead of his what his full term brother and sister were with milestones, and they were early to begin with! (walking at 10ish mths and ds 3 was walking at 9ish mths - ect....
actually apart from his size hes fine doing more than what he should be doing - imo.

I don't think anyone has been upset by this thread, and I think it's fairly safe to say that it's actually a quite valid question as alot of us appear to have been told varying answers. I think it really depends on the prematurity of the baby and how well they catch up with their milestones. At the least I would say 12 months and probably the most would be 2 years depending on the child.
I beleive it varies depending on the prematurity as the other have said. My neice was 36 weeks and they have never corrected. But Edward was 30weeks and he will be corrected until 2yrs (according too paed). I know 24 and 25 weekers who still correct at 4 yrs!

Yes I agree it really depends on just how prem they were.
I havent been upset by this thread, it is a straightforward question that I have been asked a couple of times -hence my conversation with the school principle lol! My full term son, now 19 months, so far has been behind his prem brother with some physical milestones - ie. DS1 (prem) crawled at 7.5mths (corrected) and walked at 11 months. DS2 (FT) didnt crawl until 9 months and walked at 13 months. They are all individuals arent they!
cheers

My two are 31weekers and we have recently had their 2 year corrected assessment. DD is assessing above chronological whilst DS is assessing at corrected age. He will have further intervention and at all these we are going on corrected age.
The neonatologist told us to correct my sons age until he turns 5. He was born at 28 wks.
My other son born at 34 weeks was corrected fora year only.
It really depends on when they were born and how well they were at birth.

Hey there!! My 4 yr old was a 25 weeker. He is great now but I am very interested to see him in a regular structured learning envoronment next year when he starts prep. He does seem very bright and rather advanced. Could be an environmental thing as he has been brought up around open minded adults.
